This is just a basic video discussing some very simple principles when it comes to defending yourself from incoming missiles. in this video we discuss drag, air density and the effects it has on a missile. This information is the kind of stuff I wish people had given me when I had first started DCS and I'm just hoping this will help some of the newer players out there who may not be familiar with these concepts.
Thank you to everyone for supporting the channel you're always appreciated.

Hey guys, just some real basic concepts here, nothing too complicated. just a side note, if the opponent does the same you did (drags the missile down) whoever recommits and fires again will usually win. so keep ur head in the fight. good luck and thanks for all ur support on the channel. its been an amazing few months seeing it grow. thank you guys.

I work as an aircraft engineer. And holy moly i didnt expect dcs to even have physics for missile performance under different heights. This is amazing. I remember using simple dodge mechanics in F-22 lightning 3.. Ancient but good game at its time.. obviously it didnt have the mechanics but if you wanted to dodge you had to make the missile turn so bad that it would lose energy and miss. Good vid.

Totally agree here. I've found Volk is best in class for helicopter systems and tactics in DCS (A-G operations). I really need the equivalent of this channel for A-G tactics across all modules. Obviously would need to point out how different aircraft will generically be able see some targets, or hit certain shots others can't reasonably pull off.

I always thought that by pulling down from a higher altitude you might increase the chance of getting hit by the missile. I didn't thought of the fact that increased density would slow down the missile. But now I know that i was wrong. Thank you @GS.

Physics fact of the day: In the absence of any external forces and provided your already on a heading towards your target then yes a straight line would be the quickest way between 2 points along with being the shortest distance. However when external forces get involved and when you start out moving on a different heading than your target the brachistochrone will always be the quickest way between 2 points with no exceptions. Keep up the good work though I love watching these videos.
@Power5
@Power5 5 жыл бұрын
You have to add a few more variables into your assessment though. A brachistochrone curve only works best when living creatures and airframes with G limits are not involved. "Always" the quickest way between 2 points with a difference in altitude where the destination is below the start point, and when the object does not have a biological G limit, or when the airframe does not have a mechanical G limit. Theories are always nice to understand, but you also need to know how to correctly apply them to the situation you are looking at.
@RockGeek00
@RockGeek00 5 жыл бұрын
@@Power5 Yes this is also why AI piloted planes will probably replace human ones within the next century they can calculate the most efficient trajectories on the fly, react faster and only have to worry about the integrity of the air-frame when dealing with limits. I mean they already can outfly human pilots nearly 100% of the time in simulations with the computing power of a raspberry pi. Its only a matter of time.
@Power5
@Power5 5 жыл бұрын
Again though the plane has mechanical limits so a theoretical slope is never going to be possible. Again, the brachistochrone curve figures on a stationary object and not trying to go vertical down. The fastest way to the point directly below plane will always be maximum G roll over pull down dive. Either the plane avionics or the human pilot will determine the maximum G.

Very nice video again. One thing crosses my mind though. You not only led this fox to the dense air but also increased the distance by coming down thus the missile had to travel more and more into denser environment with every feet it flew down. BTW. From what I see that the gain from using G to propel the missile it's not that significant to overcome fraction forces in a denser environment. Anyway it's indeed a good video - thanks for it :)

Is the gravity pull effect involved - or it has the coffee break? They both fired a missile almost in the same time, ok? Aim-120 that goes up gain more energy than the diving one???? Following that logic - all object coming from above must decelerate because of the air density. Especially small and aerodynamic objects. Of course the air cause drag but gravity pull should have more impact on the object than air density. The higher you fired the missile the further it should go and the higher pk In the video above it works just opposite
@GrowlingSidewinder
@GrowlingSidewinder 5 жыл бұрын
once again, firing at higher altitude works better if the target stays at high altitude due to the missile pushing thru thin air to get it. increases the range almost 4x. its not that gravtiy doesn't have an effect, its just not as big of an effect as air drag. you can see the missile at 30000 feet impacts at mach 3. while the one in dense are is basically dead. it still has speed due to gravity, but not enough for it to guide itself onto a target.

I would never think that, missiles being much faster than their terminal velocity, they would loose energy by diving, drag being worse than the potential energy they convert to speed, while it seems quite obvious and common sense. Feeling pretty dumb right now.

@@GrowlingSidewinder Sure, thanks for it. I used to do that in Thirdwire's SF2, (wich seemed much more "Lite" even before they went full arcade) more to loose myself in the ground clutter and run faster than the missiles could turn, but now that i got to see this, I remember how they just seemed to be anemic, rather than loosing lock. Particularly odd when you could use it with Kuwait's EE Lightnings against Iranian Tomcats.

Hi there! I'm loving your videos man, they got me to seriously go back to DCS and actually try to learn it (it'd been sitting in my Steam library forever). Anyway, here's my question for you: this type of tactic works great when using Fox-3 type missiles, but what if you're only equipped with Fox-1 and 2's? (i.e. the S530 and Magic II from the Mirage 2000C) I feel like I'm hugely outgunned whenever I fly that plane, but God knows I won't stop using it..! Thanks for your work!
@GrowlingSidewinder
@GrowlingSidewinder 5 жыл бұрын
thank you glad you're finding them useful. for semi active missiles i'd recommend the fpole maneuver mate. fox2 its just a matter of getting close enough. I'm not a good mirage pilot myself but i would probably stay low and use terrain masking if I was going against anything with fox3s. and wait until they come close enough, pop up and hit them with a fox1 or even a 2 if theyre close enough.

This begs a question I've been thinking of since I've watched some of your BVR fights: since DCS obviously takes air pressure vs altitude into account, does the Mach number also factor in air density, considering sound travels faster at sea level than it does at altitude?

id also add putting the missile to 90 degrees (3 or 9 oclock) and affording myself a bit shallower dive (70-80 °), think that would bleed even more energy off the missle, since it will have to turn on two axes, spendin some extra energy on vertical axis turn. right? :)

Isn't the fighter that has more height and speed at about 13:00 in a better position to recommit? It comes always down to 'chance of missile evasion' vs. 'time, energy, and chance to commit to the next offensive manouvre', doesn't it? For that reason, an F-Pole or Beam would be superiour to air-to-air-missile anti-energy manouvering, especially if you don't have any Fox 3s to force the enemy into a defensive manouver (That's the reason M2000c against the major FC3 fighters is so challenging).

Excellent video. Could a plane out of chaff decoy a radar homing missile by pickling the drop tanks at an interval?

mmmm no. not that I know of. but its an interesting idea.

Im thinking the F-15 tanks because they are so huge and while moving away from the missile.

Ok, thanks. I know the Iranians did something similar in the Iran-Iraq war since they didnt have chaff dispensers they would put foil and other pieces of metal inside the air brakes and then deploy as a decoy.

Doubtful. Tanks are much smaller radar signatures than chaffs which disperse to large area. Also I think they lose speed and trajectory much faster which helps the missile to filter them out.

Nice video! Would it be possible to do this while keeping radar lock and within effective missile range, perhaps to guide semi active missiles? Thanks!

preform F pole for semi active missiles is my advice.

But when the missile goes down line that, even though it's entering more dense air, does it gain an energy advantage due to gravity pulling it down?
@GrowlingSidewinder
@GrowlingSidewinder 5 жыл бұрын
yes it does get help from gravity but next to drag it appears to be minuscule.

Going from high to low dont that increase the rockets speed as well just that it looses energy faster when it runs out of fuel?
@GrowlingSidewinder
@GrowlingSidewinder 5 жыл бұрын
it still gets help from gravity but drag will kill its speed so fast it won't be able to hit a maneuvering target anymore. even with the help from gravity.

I see a lot of people, mostly Americans, who seem to think modern air-to-air kills occur at 50 or 100 or 150 kilometers. This is possible but very misleading.

Is there guesswork involved in when to go high again?
@GrowlingSidewinder

not really i mean guess maybe in a way, the more u do it, the more you learn the behavior of the missiles.it becomes muscle memory.

Can anyone enlighten me on why does diving bleeds missile energy but on aircrafts, diving gives them more energy. Is it because of thrust?

The AI seems poor on his side, a human would have increased speed and put himself at a 90 degree angle to your missile maybe even try a 180 escape.
@GrowlingSidewinder
@GrowlingSidewinder 5 жыл бұрын
yes the objective was not to demo a fight tho, it was to demo missile evasion, I just needed something to fire a missile at me so I could bleed it out.

You‘re breaking lock at around 10.5 nm. Is this already within pitbull range? (Always thought it was at about 8nm)

Maximilian Beyer even if it's not it's fine, ur essentially forcing the missile pitbull before it would like but it can still do it at that range. I recently learned the terminalogy for this, it's called a "cheap shot"
