This is a video of my attempt at learning to dogfight in the F-14 Tomcat, still lots to learn but here I try it against an AI Mig-29 and my idea was if I can kill an AI on excellent ability, I should be able to take on a real person next. So thats what is being attempted here today.

Since I can easily kill the AI now, I'm going to move on to PvP dog fighting with the F14 tomcat now, I don't know if anything I'm doing here is 100% correct i'm learning the aircraft like all of you so if you have tips to share with dog fighting in this thing feel free to share, I can use all the help I can get lol. next round is going to be against an su-33 so place ur bets...

Enjoying watching these dogfight videos, I've always wanted to see it go up against all of these other aircraft. Don't let the words "old" or "heavy" get to you. It's an analog beast and that has it's strengths as well. Have you tried watching old F-14, F-15 instructional training videos? Basically you're looking for ready room tactics being discussed. There was a series of DVDs I had, that went through some training with the F14, F15 , it talked some tactics. I can't find em at the moment. KZbin should have something like that with some searching. Watch others fly and see their mistakes as well.

With the Tomcat, only hairy-chested stick-and-rudder men need apply. The pinnacle of 1960's aerodynamics with no fly-by-wire means you can't just yank the stick around and have the aircraft do what you want, you actually have to think about what it is you want it to do and how you're going to get it to do it. If a newer fighter pulls you into a guns fight (which you really probably shouldn't do, the Tomcat has oodles of speed, boom and zoom with your AIM-9s and get the hell out of there if they try to close on you), drag 'em down low and slow, she'll turn with the best of them at around 330 knots, but you gotta stay on that rudder to keep the nose under control, and be disciplined with energy management. Don't let the bigger 4th gen fighters like the Su-33 and the F-15 extend on you and draw you out into an energy fight, because they'll out point you at higher speeds.

that was the F14A with the Pratt & Whitney TF30 engine. Later on the B and D version they switched to General Electric F110-GE-400 engines and the stalls and spins were gone :D

I didnt notice that, at least not in the game. You have to severely abuse the cat and keep full backpressure to get into a well developed stall or severe wing rocking to have any danger of developing flat spin.

Glad to hear verbally that you're using the rudder - most people I've seen so far that are having so much trouble aren't using enough rudder. They feel a wing drop and counter with more yaw movement rather than using the rudder to center the plane for control. Which ends up putting them in a wing separation stall..It's all about rudder play with the Tomcat - I have a feeling people are having a hard time letting go of the fly by wire and end up fighting the bird for control rather than letting the tomcat help you. @2:53 is a good example - you're low speed and instead of pulling back on the stick hard and bleeding more speed; you decide to build some by using the rudder and letting the Tomcats weight carry you down wind. *Work with the bird not against it.*

Very nice... Incorporate two things in your next fight. Lead turn your bandit-- Do not wait until he crosses your 3-9 line. Start turning BEFORE he gets directly a beam of you! You are in a fight for your life. Next, if it is a "Guns only" fight You can deny him of the way he would like to fight you. He wants to Max. Rate you, But to do that he has to fly pretty fast (A MIG-29 max. Rate is around 740 km/hr) close to 400 knots. You on the other hand want to be around 325 knots- You can defeat him by fighting a Minimum Radius fight. Your turn circles will be inside of yours. Think of a Machine gun in a shopping cart. 😎 So, make it a "One Circle" (Minimum Radius) fight. Start turning before he gets a beam of you, and watch what direction he turns, make it a "One circle" fight. Max burner, and keep it below 350 kts. Let me know if you notice anything different.

Great video again mate. The vertical fight is taught to pilots in a vid i watched today. Make them climb with you. I guess its down to power and wing loadings. ;)

The reason why you don't want Roll SAS on in the Tomcat in a dogfight is that at and above 15 units of AoA (when it starts to shake moderately) you want to be rolling the aircraft ONLY with the rudder. No lateral stick input required or needed. I also noticed that your gun firing rate was set to LOW, you'll want to switch that to HIGH for AA fights. It will make those quick shots much more deadly. As for deploying flaps during turn fighting, well, I don't know about that, I would stay off them, your maneuvering flaps will deploy automatically if you get slow enough anyway and the Tomcat has more than enough lift at slow speeds. In fact I believe it has the lowest wingloading in the game with wings fully extended.

Roll SAS should be off when performing manoeuvres above 15 units AOA. At high alpha the roll SAS can increase then likelyhood of departures.

Nice video. Take on the Su27 in the next one. Love those planes and they turn better than the mig 29 in my experience. Side note, the Persian Gulf map looks pretty ragged & blurry at low altitudes. You don't notice it high up but the blurry textures were all I could see

Climbing leads to low speeds, at which the Tomcat with its swept wing design excels. It is more maneuverable which is why he was able to line up quickly and shoot the MiG down.

@@danieldorn2927 Nah I find that hard to believe. It is so heavy. The Fulcrum has a superior thrust to weight ratio and is able to turn tighter and out run the Tomcat., imo. The Tomcat is agile at around 400 knots (370-400 knots) but the Fulcrum will kill it in a dogfight including guns only, imo. Dropping flaps is a bad idea I think as dogfight requires the aircraft to preserve its energy. Just my 2 cents though. And dropping flaps at over 225 knots? It will damage/break the mechanism.

Mav hey man, from what I've gathered since making this video going full flaps down causes the flaps to jam if u pull more than 2gs so deff not something ur supposed to do. U are supposed to use the manouvers flaps.

My experience in the tomcat is it always makes the kill. Unfortunately for me, it's usually me who kills myself rather than dies to the enemy. Besides the interesting flight characteristics, not seeing airspeed on the hud is making this tough. Also forward visibility is less than stellar. The Tomcat is fun to fly tho, having a blast learning.

also a side note, I used flaps in this fight but it seems to cause the flaps to get locked or something (probably due to high G forces I dont know), so i'm starting to think ur supposed to use maneuver flaps instead of just flaps. I can talk about that a bit maybe down the road once I research it some more. the tomcat is deff a handful in a dogfight tho.

Yeah, regular Flaps are limited to 2G / 225 KIAS. Use maneuver flaps.

Robert Curtis same here I don't feel anything huge with roll SAS off, I think it gives u a very minor advantages. Something about not making the aircraft roll over in certain low speed manouvers (if I recall correctly)

I watched the grim reapers doing dogfights with it and one of the big take away's was speed callouts by the RIO are vital in addition to keeping the bird at 330 wings extended. Trim and rudder also matter greatly.

The fight against the SU-33 will ve tough for both pilots. They have similar weight and maneuverability with the ASC on. If they merge at high speed the flanker might have a small advantage if the pilot doesn't go vertical but does.climb above the tomcat.

Tomcat turns really well around 300-330 knots; she can out-turn a lot of things if she maintains relatively low airspeed. In a horizontal turning battle, most planes tend to lose if you can manage your speed well. In a low speed dogfight, a lot of aircraft will want to either go out of plane or break off and disengage. I think the AI didn't really take advantage of the light airframe well in that fight (of course). I don't think it was necessarily a bad idea to go out of plane though as I don't think it would have won the turning battle had it continued.

Irl the GE F110 engines were a beast. If it went vertical while being chased the opponent would bleed off speed faster and have to turn back to not stall that's when the Tom Cat had them. As you did they would come out if the climb and be on their 6 for a kill. On a side note the Real Tom Cat can lock on to and shoot down 6 targets at the same time from 200 miles away can this one do that also?

yes it can, but I think its 4 maybe 6 i dont know, but for the record thats slow low maneuverability targets. like bombers (targets with a constant vector I guess) so even cruise missiles. It would struggle to hit fighters like that.

I know the pain. I went in against a Mig-29 thinking I was gonna win easy. Boy, was I wrong. I had major trouble keeping control of the nose. Out of ten fights, I maybe downed him once or twice? The F-14 is forcing me to use different tactics. I've noticed that at altitude, like around 20,000 feet and up, its hard to manuever with it. I found that dragging the enemy dowb to 15,000 and below was my best bet. Needless to say, after hours of training and learning tactics, I can deal with the flying bullet of a Mig-21Bis. Just gotta move on from that now.

@@GrowlingSidewinder Well, it should be near impossible. The same with fighting an F-16C Block 52 guns only I think. Mirage-2000C is possible. If you keep between 370--400 knots the Cat is very agile but don't drop flaps. Don't drain the E unnecessarily. The Cat B has powerful engines and is agile at 370-400 knots. I tried going against a MiG-29. Couldn't win. Almost won once but that's it. Survived twice.

A Mig 29 is a rocket ship in the vertical just like an F15. I love the tomcat but unless it's stripped down to nearly no gas and maybe two heaters it should be getting blasted in the vertical by that jet.

Well the F14 is also a rocket ship in the vertical as well. The B model has a thrust to weight ratio of .77 at max takeoff weight, .88 at normal takeoff weight, and better than 1 when it's mostly unloaded. The engines in the F14B and F15C have very similar thrust ratings. F15C is lighter than a Tomcat unless the F14 is not carrying any Aim54s, and doesn't have alot of fuel on board. This is why the F14 is such a good fighter in vertical maneuvers, you can follow damn near anything into a vertical climb, and weaker fighters like F5, FA18, get left in the dust.

If you are fighting in a Mig 29 with 50% fuel, you had better down the other aircraft ASAP or you will be gliding home. From what I have read about the F14 is that the fuel bags do not really effect the drag as much as most planes. Biggest handicap is the extra weight of that extra fuel, obviously. Pretty much every other plane needs to drop the bags or be at a much more serious handicap.

nice video but your opening was very wrong. there isnt a remote chance of "substantial f-14 fleet with airframes as good as new". You said they would have new f-14 because they sat in storage during the iran-iraq war due to lack of spare parts, but this isnt true. look it up, the shah had procured and stockpiled 10 years worth of parts and ammo for the f-14. Iran's problems were mostly w/ personnel due to engineers and pilots who had been either executed or fled. All the f-14 saw extensive combat and they are fully spent. there isnt a single phoenix missile or the original radar in working condition. Iran may have added radars and missiles. but those f-14s wont survive an encounter with a apache guardian. Also all of iran's f-14s were the pre fly by wire era models with the worse initial engine. Iran may very well have put f-5 engines on them.

Hi guy, listen to a girl's advice --> use manual wing sweep 35° in dogfight =) automode just good to turn flat at mach 0.4 - 35 to 40° u plane have more stability and u can climb with other plane, i kill all AI aircraft (F5, F15-16, mig, j11... ace) without problem with manual control mode wing sweep. +45° for +0.6 mach turn Tomcat can turn with human and m2000 fighter too Regards =) EDIT: Use trim too, +2° ~ at u preference but that help u a lot. Personally, i like to use 45° wing sweep for fight versus plane who like verticaly fight and 0.6mach ~

As i'm new to DCS and have flown a few aircraft, cessnas, aerobatic gliders etc i thought i'll start of with the F18. Not bad actually and was getting used to the dogfighting against the likes of Mig29's and Su27's winning occassionally and kinda holding my own. Then .. i tried the F14 ... dear god it handles like a bucking bronco on LSD. It bounces all over the sky, can't seem to get a decent turn rate without getting constantly close to blackout and have had my ass handed to me every single time. I love watching the Tomcat but until i can work out a good measure of control its a huge no from me. Mind you it doesnt help the random mappings that DCS wants to assign to rudders/hotas etc. I've no idea how you manage to keep it smooth mate as most of time i'm at the point of nearly throwing the warthog out the window :( The struggle continues... The f-14 is a superior airframe to the mig-29 it's more pilot finesse than the computer's ability to keep up. You're not a fighter pilot so you wouldn't possibly know the capabilities of the tomcat. Also I doubt the computer company is allowed to show the exact abilities of the airframe due to espionage. We wouldn't want Russians knowing all of the planes abilities until the shit actually hits the fan!. Great video though

The F-14 actually has a pretty impressive ITR, even compared to a Fulcrum, Flanker or Eagle, the problem is that it cannot keep STR as good as those other 3. Another engine upgrade would have helped, it was supposed to get a F110-GE-129 variant with around 30% more afterburning thrust but advanced Tomcat variants were canceled.

Actual PvP multiplayer fight: Merge occurs. Tomcat barely can turn due to wieght of AIM 54s missles and fuel tanks. Pilot franticly tries to get rio to drop tanks quickly, but doesn't want to push emergancy jettison to lose all his pheonix missles. (Even if he does it's too late) Tomcat tries to turn but delay of wing sweep causes him to bleed off lots of speed. MiG 29 gets nose around enough to lock with helmet mounted sight. MiG 29 fires R73 missles. The End. Yeah the F-14 naked can be an opponent for the MiG 29. The F-5 can also win against any 4th gen plane in a naked merge....How often does this happen in actually multiplayer....very rarely. Can we have some realistic F-14 merge battles? Things that would actually occur in multiplayer. Where you would actually try to disengage with that target rather then turn and try to fight a plane that has way more advantages in the merge then you do.

You may be surprised but according to Iranians 4x Phoenix have almost 0 impact on -A variant performance. Watch Sidewinder's previous video and you will see how deadly Phoenix is- its -C variant outrange any current in-game missile and cannot be visually spotted. No RWR warning either until it goes active.

@@TonymanCS weight is weight. Each AIM-54 is 1000 pounds 3 times more heavy then an AIM 120, Which is why emergancy jettison for the F-14 gets rid of everything but the AIM 9s. Don't believe me? Dog fight with and without them, and you'll feel the difference. Other then that you are correct the F-14 is a great BVR fighter. Which is why it should try to disengage in the merge and use it's good speed and power to break off from a WVR engagement. If it tries to turn fight it's going to be at an overall disadvantage. Can it win?..Yes. Is it good tactics? No, it will often die to smaller more manuverable fighters as long as those fighters still have missles. Which is why Iranian F-14s did not engage in WVR combat, generally in the Iran Iraq war. They were too valuable for their long range capability and for painting a good battlefield picture with the AWG-9 to risk wasting them in furballs. Also a point to make. The AIM 54 only doesn't trigger rwr if fired in tws mode then you don't get a notice till late when the missle goes active. However the AWG 9 doesn't like manuvering targets in pulse doppler mode, and it doesn't like looking down in pulse mode and can't guide the AIM 54 in that mode. so unless your opponent desides he is going to fly straight at you high the phoenix is not a win all missle.

@@het61yt Actual multiplayer fight occurs F-14B locks mig 29 at 60nm and fires a phoenix in tws at 30. 29 gets 3 seconds of warning before getting smacked by a phoenix going mach 2.5 Done lmao

I just can't believe the F14 was this horrible and difficult to dog fight in......the military would have never used it for Top gun purposes. There's gotta be something wrong with the Heatblur FM

Nah, I doubt it. At the time this plane was introduced, they didn't have anything better, and pilots would have trained for years in learning how to fly, we've been flying it for a week. They did upgrade the Tomcat on the D models with a computerized flight control system which increased its handling noticeably, but compared to anything else flying at the time of the Tomcats design, this thing was better. It was a better dogfighter than the F4 Phantom in almost every way. HB spent over 4 years, and had a group of former F14 pilots and RIOs that contributed. I'm sure the FM is as accurate as possible.

And if it is ''Horrible'' it's because either you don't use it properly (like puling the stick full aft constantly) or because you put it against very superior dogfighters like a 2000 or a F-16.
