DCS F-18 ACL tutorial - Hornet Carrier Autoland ILS - DCS in 3 Or Less

Former F/A-18 pilot here. We don’t use the ACLS until we’re on final bearing, dirty, on speed, 1200’. We’ll hand fly the whole way down to that point. Then we activate ACL, couple up, the ship will send commands, and the jet will fly the Mode 1/1A. If you want to be realistic, hand fly the CV-1 approach out of marshal, dirty up at 8nm, on speed by 6, couple up prior to GS intercept at 4nm.

@@C420sailor Cool stuff! My tutorials are all about getting the action done in-game in a simple and often dirty way rather than attempting to follow realistic milsim procedures. Always interesting though to hear how the pros do things and why though.

I always do it manually, since it's not real it adds to the fun. Never use auto. Now real life, I can see why you guys do that, it is less risk to the pilot and crew on deck, I completely get that. Now if I could figure out how to get my HMD centered when flying the 18 in VR, I would be happy.

I had time-short gamers in mind when I thought of the format but yeah, I've discovered that a lot of people prefer it for a lot of different reasons and I'm really glad of that!

Yeah. I thought it was a good sweet spot between waffling on for ages and cramming info into a Short. The longer ones can have a lot of useful insight as well though. I usually watch a few similar videos, read Chucks Guide, sometimes the module manual, and experiment in the cockpit to see what works in practice while researching each video.

I've used ATC for speed control for Case I but didn't know you could CPL as well in Case III. Very cool!

It sure is! Personally I have a hard time flying the final bit of the approach with ATC on. I tend to find myself oscillating.

I am having trouble with is. When I come in boat tells me I am high but it will land if I leave it alone. I have heard this is not hands off that one you are .5 mi you take over the plane and land it manually . I would rather have auto any idea why it brings me in high?

Excellent tutorial. One question: Do I need Supercarrier to use auto landing? Because I couldn't find "Check in" option. My menu was different and there was "abort approach" etc. If supercarrier isn't required, then I missed something

I just had a quick read through some of the forums and it seems that without the SC module you won't have ACLS but you should have ICLS (manually following the needles)

@@ChannelMamedoff ACLS does work without supercarrier. I used it many times. Just skip all the coms, get on the glideslope and within 6nm you can activate it. (the Carrier still needs to be correctly se tup though)

hi GOT i follow step by step exacly like you say in the video, but when i have 4000 ft 12-14 miles from carrier i say platform and my aircraft not receive the signal, oo i'm sorry i forgot to say in my mission in Sinai Map, did you know what it's wrong in my mission?

Honestly i forgot! Doesn't really make too much difference to the outcome though. Maybe in multiplayer it would be a nice courtesy to any other pilots on the deck.

​@@GotSpaceGameHi, landing lights has to be off. With lights on, LSO won't be able to see your AoA lights on front landing gear. After land, you should turn off your external lights.

Low light "AND" bad weather or Low light "OR" bad weather? My knee board only shows maps, i think its because old version.

Low light OR bad weather. I've not tested but I think it works up to 30 minutes after sunrise / before sunset. Also not sure about the weather minimums. Maybe I should do a test at some point and publish my results! Not sure about your kneeboard though... Do you have the SC module? What map are you flying on?

This works, but you could also show the correct approach procedure, and use the radio calls at the correct points.
