DCS: Harrier VSTOL Tutorial

Fun alternative for Ship landing, Once you are on final you can activate ATT HLD, set the witches hat on the horizon, and fly the rest of the approach using only throttle, nozzles, and rudder. Learned that after a Fight Pilot Podcast episode. I even did a full case I like that once but it wasn't pretty.

Very good tutorial. I've been watching Harrier VSTOL tutorials ever since, but yours had some very different twists and tips. The one that made the greatest difference for me was the use of rudder when aligned with the ship. I've always used aileron roll to hover above the ship and it always caused the darn oscillations you've talked about. Thank you for this.

Thank you. You will need to still practice NOT using rudder for non carrier non windly landings....but I think once you get it nailed this way then using the stick to slide sideways will fall into place as well

You can also do the CASE 1 recovery with flaps to Auto, I find its just 1 less step to miss out on and you also get a slightly faster closure on the final

It is....once it clicks.....and all of a sudden it will click for you. Trim and gently on the controls are key. I spent ages hacking at the stick, losing lift and going for lots of swims. I think the key is almost to try not to use the stick at all.

Nice video! One thing that is also cool is varible nozzle landings, where you set the throttle setting in the downwind and use gental nozzle movementnts either forward or backward to control decent. Its more efficient, and a pretty fun challenge

Yup. That's what I do. Set to 82 ish to bring to a stop and use micro adjustments on the nozzles to move forward and back. Leave the stick alone as much as I can

I'm finding your vids very good and different mate. Well done. Could I request 2 vids please? 1) a vid dedicated to the DMT and every way it can be used in missions instead of the TPOD and using the yardstick thing also. 2) a mission editor vid dedicated to how the UK harrier force used farps/fobs in Germany woods. Maybe the vid could go into background detail on how they were used IRL and how we can replicate them deep on wooded clearings within DCS maps. For game play I think they should use the tacan method of finding them. Would it be possible to actually use the cam nets to hide the harrier once they come off the pad to re arm? One of my dream missions I would love to build or play is launching off the boat about 150 miles away from primary target then vertical landing on a farp hidden within woods away from towns and awaiting a JTAC to send me a message to attack a target then back again to the pad for a few CAS missions then back to boat. Wooded farp could be about 50 miles away from front line? Thanks

I have already covered the 2d yardstick in my accurate iron bombing video and the farp is on my to do list...but you have given me some inspiration in regard to wooded areas.....it will be a while before I do one on the dmt though as I so rarely use it....its on my list....but being honest it's a low priority.....farps are near the top though

How about an update to this amazing video and show the harrier landing with the maximum weather on rolling and pitching deck? Reading the book how to be a fighter pilot (harrier) the author tells us about different ways to land on the deck and harrier exercises with mother in chapter 10. Quiet interesting. Do you know if anyone has got the lights on the boat to work correctly yet? I've never seen a video on them or a player landing using them. Thanks for the quick reply mate.

2:05 is that requirement just fuel or fuel + water?

Great question. It "SHOULD" be fuel AND water however based on the performance it appears to be just fuel; there is a bug in regard to the weight of water.
