In this classic world war 2 match up we have the supermarine spitfire against the German Bf-109 over Normandy. We test the capabilities of the spitfire against the bf109 and try to force a spitfire victory. Playing around with the spitfire lately, and I have to admit I really really enjoy the aircraft. I think its one of the best World war 2 modules in DCS right now. Thanks for watching, I appreciate the support.

Why should a Bf109K be able to out dive a Spifire Mk IX? The Spit is aerodynamically cleaner and does not have the negative G engine problems of earlier Spitfires.

He doesn't seem to know strength of his 109. He should not turn with the first merge but just go for shallow climb while the spitfire loses energy on its turn. At an altitude advantage it can boom n zoom out. He did a good job making you overshoot but couldn't get a shot on you.

Can't tell about DCS, but I'm experienced with old IL2 series. Spitfire has better energy retention in turn than 109. Shallow climb would be not good enougth. 109 will be separated & a bit higher, but spitfire will have good position on his six. Good tactic for 109 is boom & zoom with energy advantage at beginning. In defensive, high AOA scissors to try spitfire overshoot. 109 also have better vertical climb & proppeler hang ability. It's worth to mention higher fight took place it's better for Spitfire. Conclusion is, Spitfire should try to keep speed while turning and tend to to fight in continous turns. 109 should force vertical fight, or scissors stall fight cause of better climb & high AOA handling. For Spitfire it's not a good idea to go into downward spiral descend. 109 is better in this regard. Remember that 109 can put flaps on middle possitions (combat or takeoff), while Spitfire has no middle possitions - only retracted or fully lowered landing position. This is tricky for Spitfire pilot. On the other hand Spitfire is better in spiral climb. It's usefull to shake off 109 from Spitfire tail & gain advantage over 109. 109 K4 is faster than Spitfire. In danger 109 should try to separate in dive. If Spitfire will follow, 109 has high chance to out climb Spitfire in zoom climb, but it's quite hazardous - Spitfire can put his gunsight on 109 & score long distance lucky shoots.

@@303Pinker this only works for the 109E series, they have the clipped wings which bleed lots of energy in turns due to vorticies caused at the edge. The F model onwards have considerably better manoeuvering energy retention, and in the case of the K means the 109 can easily energy fight the spitfire

Yeah, recently I've felt that each matchup growling was in the plane I would've picked to win. Not judging skill, mind you, just that growling's preferences matched my own. Obviously it'd be more useful to me if Growling were flying the plane that I would've picked to **lose**. Your way is the best way to do it, but it would take time to really learn the planes.

Peregrine 7 exactly. In this video especially I thought the entire time “turn fighting a spitfire isn’t smart you’re going to lose this” and he did. I would have wanted to see how sidewinder would have fought in the K4 knowing his own strategy of bringing the fight low and keeping the K4 in a turn fight. The same goes for his F86/ MiG 15 fight. They’re both extremely close aircraft in terms of capability which would really show which pilot has more skill and which one could better adapt to his plane. Things like that add so much more to these already entertaining videos

I was watching The World at War again recently and in the Battle of Britain episode the camera pans over a log book/sortie record of a Spitfire Squadron. You can see the notes for one entry which simply read, "Bloody good dogfight!" That counted as a summary of an engagement back then haha.

Солнцевская Братва Actually not true lol. Even griffin spits could out turn, outrun and climb with 109s. The only advantage it had was maybe dive and turn retention. Also you try hammer heading on a Spitfire and not having the visibility to even see him (109s in real life had bad visibility compared to Spitfires and mustangs. Also the Kurfürst wouldn’t “decimate” anything because it ran on 1.8 ata not the 1.98 in most games like dcs to begin with. Also you got to see your enemy to get the drop of defend against him... Another thing if you don’t have the fuel how will you fight them for extended periods? Of which spitfires and most allied planes would win as the fight dragged on since allied planes would get exponentially lighter with all the fuel they carried and the performance curve itself.

I ´d really like to see you flying the 109 against a competent Spit. The way your opponents fly the 109 is making them an easy prey for the Spitfire.The advantage of the 109 is coming from boom and zoom/energy fighting and not in turn fights and I think that the 109 should gain seperation and keeping altitude, right?

Explanations with actual figures in tacview are fine. The inserted 3rd person views during the actual dogfight do give an « inflight » perspective. I think your dogfights / missions are among the most enlightening and entertaining at the same time. Old warbirds fights are more interesting - to me - for they have a greater authenticity than when the modern jets dogfight. I give it to you that these have relevance from a pilot skills standpoint. He did all the work GS. He exerted the most effort all to push daises. Wingrock, stalls, departures, etc... and you smoothly drove all around the madness enjoying the circus. Did you break a sweat? Were you texting your Sweetie? Online shopping for blue paint for the nursery? Online browsing for a delicious cheese fondue recipe? The 109 was frantic, scattered. He lost the plot fighting your fight. BnZ... Boom and Zoom; this is the 109's filet mignon. Between you other channels, very little is covered regarding Boom and Zoom. Perhaps a video on this is in the pipeline? Up, hang on prop., hammerhead, down and kill, back up, zoom climb if danger close and separate if possible, landing flaps to get back down, shoot and kill. The FW-190A8 is released or will be soon. It is a pure Boom n Zoom bird. Another great video. Thanks and keep up the great work!

Incredible how wrong you are, the 109 in DCS is effectively helpless against the spitfire with the current FM, the spitfire holds basically every advantage. I'll gladly do a 1v1 with you if you think i am wrong, the situation was quite evident when GS and I swapped crates. ;)

Growling Sidewinder sometimes see a spit and hurricane escorting a Lancaster over on route to the airshows. They are based at raf coningsby in Lincolnshire. I’m in Nottinghamshire and I was shocked last summer to see the Lancaster flying super low over my house. It was a real pleasure for me. 👍👍

Out of curiosity, when you on the deck in the 2 circle turn, to the left let's say, and you can't quite get your nose to lead the target, could you do a barrel roll and end up on the inside of the turn without any speed sacrifice?

I fly Bf-109 F4 and the first thing to learn is - Do not turnfight when flying Bf-109. Exceptions are rare and depend on the enemy's aircraft model and overall situation but anyway all turnfights are risky, so why do it if it is unlikely that you gonna win.

Rip, at the end there was no choice but to land (Death sentence unless at lower speeds (risk of sever to minimal whiplash)), or eject (Don't know if that function was implemented into the game, but if so then that would include the risk of hanging on a tree (Only chances of survival is if enemy ground forces reached the area (Enemy of the Bf- 109 pilot) or, if there is any remaining civilians (Unlikely) Or if the allies of the enemy pilots were in the location)). This is just my thoughts of possibilities if this situation was in a real life scenario.

I was opposed in the beginning of the G limitations. Comparing the performance in il 2 Bodenplatte of the Spit IX and 109 k4, I get quite of a similar performance. But now it is not more possible in the Spit to make those 32 degrees per second 7.4 G turns. Because you will be sleeping. Now the fight is very very different. It is not possible to pull the stick hope for the best, and win the turn fight no matter what. Now the 109 will outurn the Spit if he has managed more carefully its G limitations. And on the other hand it is pain to fight the P51 because its pilot has a G suit.

The Spit comes out on top every single time if all other things are equal (pilot skill included). The only advantage the P-51 had over similar generation Spitfires was range.

P51 is better against late 109s than Spitfire. Usually 109 will run away from Spitfire, and come back later with altitude advantage.

@@303Pinker Thank you! Often the P51 is criticized because the critic wants to boost the Spit (or P-47), but the fact is the P-51 was overall the best allied fighter on the western front. It had the best balanced compromise of positive attributes, which obviously includes range.

109 should attack B17 from front, than follow a high speed dive & run away like vanishing point.

The 109G in fact lacked the vertical superiority that you mentioned over the Mk IV Spitfire. It was a quantum leap for the design in response to the the FW190, and was considered superior to the 109 at all altitudes in terms of speed, agility, and climb performance. Give it a try next time ;-)

Without repeating some of the comments below, it's worth pointing out that having a superior sustained climb rate or higher top speed doesn't mean you can simply disengage at will once the energy states are equalized. These old aircraft need time to accelerate, so it's important to keep your energy state higher than your opponent's.

@@stewartmorley2683 than f22 would die rather quickly. Jets, even f22 don't turn comparing to warbird. 109 would kill it easily. Few 30mm shell rounds would do the job. Vector thrust does not mean plane make tighter sustain turn. It allow to point it's nose in direction but jets are heavy. They don't turn like warbirds. 109 could do 360 degree turn in 18-20 secconds in tight circle. Good luck for f22.

There are instances where a Spitfire our dives a 109 and I’m not talking about the griffons. It has a lot to due with the drag coefficients. Spitfires have very low drag thin wings, and nose. So at a certain speed range a Spitfire will out dive, or rather dive with a 109 of a similar weight class depending on the model ofc. It’s never as clear cut as to which plane has what advantages most times with WW2 planes. It’s very complex, and situational. The Spitfires engine settings with 150 octane could reach around 1986hp (which was more common than the K4 itself at its own introduction) could well put climb a 109. However, since everything is situational for the most part it is dependent on energy states, positioning, and distance. But in a stable climb a Spitfire will out climb a 109 at its optimal climb speed. But I doubt DCS gave this Spitfire 150 octane since they didn’t for the P51D in DCS which is just weird. By the time the K4 came out most allied planes ran on 150 octane, and really high manifold pressures with some B model mustangs putting out near 2,000hp or more with that 90”HG manifold. It was a lot more common to run into a Spitfire, Mustang, or thunderbolt that ran 150 octane/with a manifold pressure above 70” than it was to encounter a K4, or Dora 9. So that’s why it’s weird that DCS models allied aircraft so lowly... I honestly dread when sims just throw the advantage to the germans that they’ve never had to begin with. Anyways amazing video! A BF-109 would never fight a spit like that. I wish you would fight experienced warbirds pilots. Try contacting them pls, there are some very good pilots on youtube that also have DCS birds.

Good fight, but turning like that with a bf109 is just stupid. Merge, shallow climb for some time, then stall climb. You’ll have secured an enormous altitude advantage

Bf109K4 is more of a high altitude fighter and the Spitfire Mk.IX more of a medium to low fighter so the Bf109 pilot should have tried to keep the fight high, where he will be faster and able to outclimb the spitfire...going to the deck against any spitfire is not the way to go....
