Tactical Comm has really come a long way. I was a controller and an instructor for new AWACS controllers. through AFTTP 3-1.1 revisions and the ALSA Com standards, we have really improved the standardization & brevity on the radio since this engagement - which was before y time. Today Tac C2 never uses the word "cleared" because it is reserved for ATC & JTAC weapons release Comm. We also would never authorize a shot off of a BANDIT ID since in all ID Matrixes only a HOSTILE ID - a contact that is positively ID'd as an enemy (BANDIT) AND has demonstrated the commander's designated "hostile act" or "hostile intent" can be fired on. Sometime the HA/HI is a simple as flying is designated airspace, but missile don't leave rails until the word HOSTILE is spoken. that's a lesson learned from friendly fire.

Interesting the choice of AAMRAM at near minimal distance with the bogey in visual range - I wonder if there was a thought for using Sidewinder. Interesting in most of these videos the "limited" duration of rocket motor burn. I did not know that most missiles are in "glide" mode on approach to target. Thank you for these excellent video dioramas! Can we call these dioramas or is that for static displays only?
@showtime1123 жыл бұрын
It's a Rules of Engagement thing. This is not an open war so they are careful. F-16s need to be sure that this is an Iraqi fighter that crossed the line. They get AWACS confirmation at the last moment and only then Nordo fires. Missile motors actually burn briefly and missile then continues using the energy it accumulated until that point. Are these dioramas? I don't know. Definition says it's a static display set. But I don't mind if you want to call it that way 😁 Thanks for the comment!

I know the correction about the 33rdFS has already been made, but just a historical fact - the 310th Tophats is a training squadron at Luke AFB, AZ, where new USAF F-16 Pilots learn to fly the jet. the 310th did a lot of NVG training for Viper pilots, but with the conversion to the F-35, the 310th + the 309th Mad Mallards (basic F-16 flight training squadron) merged resources so the 309th could continue F-16 training while the 310th began F-35 operations.

Great Historical Video Content as always. 👍Hardly got time to breath in between your video, following ups are coming in @Mach Speed. 🏃♂️The refiling scene @4:20min. left me speechless, 😉it was simply great done. What I don't understand, the MIG-25 Pilot should have realized that he's been locked on, so why he has not taken any countermeasures 🤔? I mean, the MIG-25 is a great Fighter Jet plane, so I really wonder ??? Not100% sure but was it in 1992 or in 2003 where funny wise the Iraqi Air Force buried MIG-21,MIG-23, MIG-25 in the sand trying to hide them from the Enemies.🤦♂️I was told also that the fact was the Iraqi Air Force sucked at defending Iraqi airspace.
@showtime1123 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked this one too! As for the Iraqi pilot, nobody seems to know for sure what was happening there but I can offer some speculations. It is possible that he was trying to maneuver and deploy chaff but it simply didn't work. I found a post on some forum that he may have launched a missile (IR probably since F-16s got no warnings), so that was his plan. Perhaps the most likely explanation comes from the fact that this wasn't a proper war and rules of engagement might not have been too clear for the Iraqi side. They were trained to follow GCI guidance and he might have been receiving delayed or contradictory commands. He was also being jammed, this might have been a factor. The airplanes being buried in the sad took place later in the OIF when Iraqi Air Force never even attempted to defend their airspace. They kinda went 'underground' 😁
@PappaBear_yt3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on most points, but MiG-25 being a great fighter plane is a bit of a stretch, IMO. Not very agile, but it's top speed was it's chance of survival. Flying it slower than Mach 2 was somewhat of a waste and quite risky, being a huge target in the sky. 🤔
@LockOnNow3 жыл бұрын
@@PappaBear_yt I agree with you, it was not the lightest High-Speed supersonic interceptor. The MiG-25 is one of the fastest combat aircraft ever produced, capable of achieving speeds in excess of Mach 2.83. Production ended in 1984. High-strength steels and titanium are used in approximately 80% of the MiG-25 airframe. It was a hit-and-run fighter, Or one could say (2 FAST 4YOU) therefore it also had no on board cannons it was not really made to get into close dogfighting. The armament was 4 missiles, and Pappa Bear as you said its weapon was its terrific speed of Mach 2.83. Maybe someone familiar with F-16s can help me out, I've never understood why they carry AMRAAMs on the wingtip stations. We never did that when I worked on F/A-18s, it doesn't make sense to me to have a heavier payload on the furthest outboard stations, especially if carrying the AIM-9 as well. On Hornets and Supers we almost always carried heavier ordinance further inboard.

That was an easy kill, the MiG was not trying to attack or evade
@showtime1123 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say it was really 'easy'. And we don't really know if the MiG was trying to attack or not. He might have been jammed effectively. He might have even launched an IR homing missile. RoE was such that the F-16 leader needed to have the nerves of steel approaching the MiG and only getting confirmation at the last moment. Plus, worrying about his inexperienced wingman. It might have easily ended differently. Besides, in the last 40 years, all air-to-air duels were decided by factor other that ACM. It is always technology, tactics, psychology..... GS style, 'fair' duels between equal opponents where the winner is decided by superior maneuvers just don't happen anymore.

F-16s apparently maneuvered to cut him off. What exactly was happening with the MiG-25 pilot will probably never be known exactly. It could be that he was jammed hard, didn't have a proper situational awareness. Maybe he was depending on GCI to tell him what to do which they didn't. These are all just assumptions but could explain it.

The only pilot? There was lots of American Planes shot down in Air to air combat most of them the US didn’t even acknowledge (like When Iraq was able to take down an F15 in the gulf war or in the 70s) So alot of American Jets got shot down in the gulf war thats not even counting the ones the US hides As for Iraq the jet casualties was also way less than the media says because Iraq was good at storing the jets underground
