First rule of air refueling by boom: do not look at the boom. You will keep chasing the boom, and the boom operator will keep chasing you. Instead, use the tanker as the reference.

Hey, that's my old airframe - KC-135. Not sure if you know or if the game even implements it correctly but the lights on the underbelly of the tanker are called PDI lights(sometimes PDL) and are there to help you, especially during night refuelling - might be worth learning how they work but hard to explain without pictures. Something I've heard is always think two steps in advance, if you are closing fast it takes awhile for you to lose that inertia so plan 2 steps ahead - especially if your aircraft is heavy. Moving from pre-contact to contact takes patience. Another thing, if you are prone to over-correcting a lot right before contact - you don't have to keep a neutral tim setting, some pilots like to set the trim nose down a small bit and work against it - so you only need to correct one less axis. I was a Boom Operator and prior KC-135 Crew Chief

Nice vid. The first time i did this was in Falcon 4 Allied Force after a 90 minutes interdiction strike in a coop game. I could never connect long enough when i was practicing. But that day everything just went perfect. We dropped our bombs destroyed 90% of our targets and refueled when flying on fumes. That day i was sure i would not make it to base and run out of fuel because i would not be able to refuel. If it really matters it suddenly becomes easy :)

That was painful, with every disconnect you need to toggle the refueling port back on you plane with the nose wheel steering control, this is indicated on the right spar of your HUD in Green (when you break contact, it went to disconnected), you will never connect again, no matter how you fly onto the boom, until you bring that green light back to ready.

You have to reset the door after you disconnect... NWS button on the stick. Or else it won't connect you again.

Try looking up more at the tanker instead of JUST the boom. I flew formation with the FSX Steel Eagles in the F18 like the Blue Angels. They (Jayhook :) ) taught me how to fly formation, and focusing on the plane makes the changes in position easier to catch. Zooming out will help a bit too

Hey Devildog, I just wanted to point this out. Every time you disconnect with the boom, you have to press the nose wheel steering button on your joystick to reset the system for refueling again.

for those of you not noticing, when the DISCONNECT light shows, the fuel door is locked out (usually happens after an unexpected disconnect). Pressing the NWS key will reset this and allow you to continue

Yeah this is hard as hell, yet it shouldn't be as hard as it is in this game. Really all you should have to do is get into formation with the tanker, then slowly approach it at like 1-2 knot speed. Then the boom operator should just guide the boom into the refueling door as you approach, after that just throttle back and stay in roughly the same spot.

You need to press the pinky switch everytime you disconnect to allow it to connect again. If you look to the right of the hug it says "Disconnect", when you hit the pinky switch it will say "Ready", then you can reconnect to the boom.

This brings back memories for me! Devil, you should have used your nv-goggles at night. If you look at the boom in daylight you will see markings on it. Don't aim for the boom! Pick a reference on the aircraft and a reference on your HUD and focus on the aircraft. So long as you match speed, alt & direction with the tanker the boom operator will actually steer and direct the boom to your fuel door. When your connected just use your trim and small forward and back throttle movements to keep the markings on the boom in the green. Good luck bro!

The markers are located on the boom itself and they look like chevrons...on the aircraft you just need to pick a point of reference like using the tip of the nose on the center top of ur HUD.

Can you set the knots auto pilot? Put your auto pilot speed to the same speed as the KC135 and stay steady and boom your done

No that does not work. Even if the autopilot would not disengage it will be almost impossible to refuel like that. Manual is the way to go.

Try using just your right engine throttle. It allows very slight changes in airspeed and makes it more easier to concentrate on your stick.

+Kyle Currier It's much easier to fly precisely in real life than on the sim. You get a lot better tactile response from the aircraft and controls, depth perception is better, you can feel the acceleration results from your control inputs. Now, there are other things that are much more difficult in real life, like fatigue, communication, G-force, maybe nerves and anxiety, unexpected events, traffic, weather, etc. But flying itself is less intuitive and natural in the sim.

Dumb question maybe but, why did you not use the autopilot for that? most modern jets have an autopilot "program" for refueling. Have not played the game, so dont hate me if that is not a feature in there. ;) Nice vid though, looked intense all the way.

There was a video of an F/A-18 refueling automatically.. but it was just a test or something like that. Sometimes I use the autopilot in the F-15 but when i try it with the A-10 the autopilot is going off.

+SomewhatAce13 but here is diff re-fuling lines....auto pilot would only work if the re fuller had a boom with a boom pilot...if it's one of them 1's with the lines draped from wings auto pilot can not detect the line...i'm not a pilot, but my cousin is a boom pilot...you pull up behind air craft engage auto pilot, and boom driver connects you, then he calls to turn refuling on, and the line drops from boom while fuel is being loaded....wish i knew all the correct lingo...but you can not auto pilot a line flapping around in the air...

See now in real life once they get hooked up, you would use autopilot to level you're flight, and match your airspeed with the KC-135s airspeed, the AI seems pretty difficult to do this with as you can't ask them how fast their going.

Why didnt you use your NVGs? You could see the shape of the tanker so much more easily and use it as perfect orientation reference. Also there is no reason to let the TACAN constantly distract you with its morsed ID, mute the ID on your Intercom control panel to keep your awareness and concentration maximized.

@marinegamer....u need to check your facts sir...the A-10 is not retiring...the Air Force and House Appropriations Committee want to retire it in favor to build more F-35s and to keep the entire fleet of F-16s..however the Army wants to keep them and the House passed a bill blocking any attempt to retire the A-10s..which using the excuse to to keep the F-16s is funny considering all F-16s r to b retired by 2020 anyway..
