Before I go on with the rest of my comment, I would like to say, this guy deserves all the respect i can give him. Which is a lot. But honestly, it's not as difficult as memorizing the steps and THEN putting dance moves to it. I'm nowhere near as good as this guy, but when you play a song enough, you do start throwing things into it and eventually it becomes a freestyle. And you start to remember the whole sequence as a dance instead of a game. Everything is so much easier to remember that way.

What I'd like to know is what grade he got. No matter how cool he looks, that's a part of the game too. Anyone can do that, but they do it AND have the steps memorized where that was an A or B, then I'm impressed. :3

Legally, you're wrong. The first patent for 'dance game apparatus' was for DDRe by Konami, in the US on August 25, 1998. The patent for Pump was approved in 1999.

Actually, he is Korean. If you've ever seen vids from DDRStreet (defunct DDR site), you'll see him there quite a bit. It was an honor to see him live @ that tournament! (Even a bigger honor to see him do "Smoke". THAT routine is sick too.)

well, I mean it's a different game entirely since PIU was intended almost solely for freestyle. Considering he only had four arrows instead of five on a smaller pad, that's a pretty damn good routine. not only that no one has made a better dam dariam routine since he won that tournament five years ago. if you want real "dancing" on DDR look up clark kent/jihon, mel b, dj 8-ball, pakwan kenobi, bruce leroy, reign, nobody jen, liustyle, hypnotikz, or any of those other freestylers.

"Free" freestyle (improv.) is just a way to play. It's not going to earn you big points in style competitions (since you've got no real plan, you're just going at it!). Of course, it does generally look good and it's more fun imo.
