My experience from DDR to DDR3... as long as you have enough ram for your need. It doesnt matter if you have stat of the art or 2nd gen ram type. DDR4 bought today wont be "obsolete" before you buy a new computer. So it all comes down to the overall cost, what motherboard you want and if you dont mind the early adopter price tag. Obviously DDR5 is better, but you should ask yourself if you actually need it. - Lets not forget that fast ram doesnt make your SSD or spinndisk faster...

I heard that ECC was at last going to be standard for DDR5 were it's optional for ddr4 which is why few boards support ECC
@scottr76833 жыл бұрын
Sort of... DDR5 has mandatory in-chip ecc, which protects against single bit errors in a single chip. This is necessary, because the larger capacity, and higher transfer rates will have a higher error rate. This will increase yields, because ram that might have 1 error out of every few billion cycles will be stable, and can be sold without issue. This will lower cost. ECC across the entire DIMM is still a thing, but instead of having 1 parity chip per 8 normal chips, you'll have 1 parity chip per 4 normal chips, making it actually cost more.

In theory ECC should make it possible to overclock RAM to much higher speeds since it should improve stability.
@dakra1373 жыл бұрын
@@grn1 re: "It's not really that much" as in without ECC you have a few undetected errors per month, and with ECC you don't. For engineering, SW development, banking, analytics, and health care, I want ECC. "If Intel hadn't convinced people we didn't need ECC." I didn't know they accomplished that. What they did do was disable ECC in "non-server" grade chips, so they could charge more for "server" grade chips with ECC enabled. What will Intel do to prevent consumer grade chips from infiltrating the server market once the DDR5 ECC is unavoidable????

@5:25, Burst Length, all DDR rams since DDR#1 through 5 allows sequential unbroken burst reads and writes, meaning, 0 wasted clocks between reads or writes when accessing the same row, continuously reading in a straight line. The annoying issue is the larger minimum burst length of the DDR5 which means is you want 1 word at the beginning of the row and another in the middle, you are stuck reading the minimum 16 words each time wasting clock cycles before you can get to the second word in the middle of the row. If you look at DDR4 being half speed, the half sized burst length means to access those 2 different positioned words of the same row, it will waste the same amount of time as the DDR5. If the DDR5 burst length was only 8 words like DDR4, then the DDR5 would waste half the amount of time to get to those 2 wanted words compared to DDR4.
@MaxGuides3 жыл бұрын
It’s kinda misleading to show the pins being split into two channels because you need all the pins to get the full bandwidth. When it is just alternating what components it is sending to since the throughput is higher than the latency of the components combined with the fact that it is reading multiple parts of each wave.

So if anyone is thinking to buy latest DDR5 upon release, it will cost a fortune to build it. Right now if you need a PC, just buy current gen DDR4, about 5 years later from today, DDR5 will be available in cheaper and improved form, then build your PC on that.

RAM is the short-term memory of your computer. Bigger DDR number = more + faster = better (but more expensive). Get at least as much RAM as you need (check task manager to see how much RAM is "committed", and get more than that amount), in at least 2 sticks (so you can run in dual-channel = faster), and of the DDR type that your CPU and motherboard are compatible with. More MHz (Megahertz/Frequency) = faster. More C (CL/CAS latency) = slower. That's basically all the average person needs to know about RAM to be able to make sensible decisions about it.

Late to the video, but burst length was explained wrong: once a row was activated, you need CAS cycles to actually read/write, each with a TCAS wait. Burst length is the number of cycles after TCAS that actually transfer data. So for a 8 vs 16 burst length difference, you have 2xTCAS+8 vs TCAS+16 (basically you halve TCAS penalties in best-case scenario). PS: most already know TCAS is the predominant performance "metric" (I know, also frequency)...this is why: for each burst, TCAS is mandatory, but TRP+TRCD are only "used" when next data is not in the same row.

Burst length is not literally length of bit. It is just phase clock to burst group of bit on the buffer cache. Length of column bit (bit line) is depending of DQ gate and equal with page width (chip organization), such as x8. And equal with burst chop transfered to buffer cache. So page witdh let say x8, burst length is 16, total bite that can be burst is about 8 x 16 phase = 128 bit = 16 byte. Equal with cpu cache line. Page width could be x4 x8 and x16. Let say burst chop is x4, page width is x4, burst length in ddr5 can be 32 instead of 16. Short story, sorry about my english

Good info. Currently, I'd just go with 64 GB of DDR4 3200 CL16. Faster RAM would only make a difference if RAM speed was actually the bottleneck in your use case, which is very rarely the case.

Hey thanks for this video. I just bought a $5363 PC from Digital Storm (because they actually have new cpus and gpus which I find impossible to buy on my own) and one of the things that I was concerned about is getting hosed by not waiting for DDR5. You're right though, at first it will be better but it will be more expensive and likely will not mature for another year or so after it comes out. So, I'm hoping to get a good 4-5 years out of my 5950X/ RTX 3090 build.

It is important to note for DDR memories that performance is not linear with clock speed. One of the most important timing specifications of a DDR ram is the /CAS to DATA time. This spec is usually given in clock cycles at a particular clock rate but in reality it is a constant time t independent of clock. For example, examining the published Crucial data on DDR4, the clock ranges from 933MHz (ddr 1866) to 1600 (ddr 3200) or 1.07 ns to 0.65 ns. However the /CAS to DATA latency in clocks increases with these clock speeds from 13 to 22 cycles. At the same time, the latency expressed in nanoseconds ranges from 13.93 to 13.75 with an excursion into the 14+ ns range. Overall it remains relatively constant. The rest of the ram circuitry is largely clock dependent so it will perform better. This shows how important making effective use of /CAS bursts to strobe out sequential column data is. Internal and external cache memories are tuned to match the burst sizes of the rams. The point is that if you overclock the memory it will deliver data faster, but not nearly the same percentage as the clock speed-up. And your memories will have to be fast enough to follow along.

My opinion on this is wait. Just wait. Let many have said DDR5 will be better than DDR4 when its finally released but it won't be better for the price. You are better off buying a computer now, wait 4-5 years down the line and upgrade when DDR5 is at its peak potential. I see it as a waste of money to buy when DDR5 is first release, pay a premium, and then have to pay a premium again for a better DDR5 later on.

even today 8gb of ram is _good enough_ and 16gb is _very good_, 32gb is already an overkill for **gamers** ,and that's just the max for 1 stick, most pc's have slots for at least 2, and often 4 ram sticks DDR5 is going to be important for graphic designers, animators, 3d modelers etc. since this kind of work is usually much more ram-demanding than video games. I'd consider getting DDR5 only few years after it becomes "the standard" since the faster read times are going to be nice, tho its not worth holding on from building a rig today
