Salve Governor,
Your recent survey has proven to be an embarrassment of monumental proportions, revealing a grave incompetence that jeopardizes the prosperity of Rome. The marble and iron you so confidently promised lie far beyond the reach of our current roads, buried deep within treacherous mountainous terrain and hostile lands teeming with Rome's enemies. Your misguided assurances have left us vulnerable and ill-prepared, a testament to your profound lack of foresight and diligence. As punishment for this colossal failure, I demand the full amount of marble and iron products promised. Fail again, and your next assignment will be located far off-shore.

12:30 Aha I was tempted to bring that idea up, about God Effects but only the curses, super glad to see to see it happen, I was really missing the alarm caused by their little movies upon cursing you. Just feels right, and the injection of chaos is always charming.

I get why connecting the city is a terrible idea, but it really highlights how Caesar 3 is more a puzzle game than city builder. Like, if you go in blind and make roads, crossways and whatnot like a normal city, you will be having a horrible time. It works on esoteric designs and ideas that make for a pretty unique game, but I always feel calling it a city builder is a bit of a misnomer. Its the coat of paint on top yeah, but just doesnt feel like a city to me. Maps like that Londinium, now that is more like it. :P Mind, I do enjoy these videos a LOT and still watch them, so this is just voicing an opinion (And kind of trying to reason what the person that asks for the connected city may be aiming for)

I feel that's a major aspect that CIII Augustus improves over "vanilla". It gives you slightly more tools, so you can make a city more realistic while it's functional too. Of course, when you go for ultra efficiency and all that it's still preferable to use various mechanical quirks, but subjectively, it didn't feel so much anymore like you really absolutely have to.

I wonder if, instead of removing plaza, it would be better to increase the price of building them? Tiling was and is a slow and labourious process, and you would be less inclined to spam them down if they cost something like 1000 denarii

I wonder if Jake would like Songs of Syx "the epic city-state simulator" (best comparison i can come up with is like a hybrid of Caesar III and RimWorld, for better or worse), though he'd probably want to wait for 1.0 after the developer (coincidentally named JakeTheDondorian) is satisfied with the polish and bugfixing. Of course, for all I know he's already tried it.

I don't touch Early Access titles, and the most recent word from the Syx dev is that Q1 2025 is the rough date for a 1.0 release. Then again, the Steam Store Page still says it'll be a 2023 release, so I don't hold high hopes for it.

Hi Jake, played CIII a long time ago in my youth but was never any good. You talk a lot about mergers but I'm still unsure why they are so good? Do the merged building hold more people, or is it something like: many small houses suck up more resources than a few big ones? Cheers!
@DDRJake
@DDRJake 19 күн бұрын
Sure. There are various small reasons why mergers are good including stability, population density, making more space of land from roads and small roundings, but the main benefit is twofold: Prosperity and Goods Consumption. Prosperity is usually the main goal of a map alongside population, and it is capped by the average level of all your houses. In this, a 2x2 merged house counts the same as a 1x1 non-merged house, but holds four times the population. For an extreme example, a city with one Grand Villa and twenty blocks of 2x2 merged small casa will have a prosperity cap of 61. An identical city which instead of twenty 2x2 casas has eighty 1x1 casas will have the same population, but a prosperity cap of only 41. Significant! Regarding goods production, every house consumes the same amount of Pottery and furniture, regardless of its population. a 1x1 large casa with a single lonely person living in it will consume as much pottery as a 2*2 medium insulae with 80 people inside it. This means you'll need to produce or import as well as distribute far more goods for the same amount of people, which can put a strain on your budget, market ladies and industry. Note that this is irrelevent for Oil and Wine, as the only houses that consume these are Large Insulae and better, which are already forced into mergers no matter what. In almost all cases, mergers are superior. The main reasons you would not want mergers are either if you needed population in a very small space where you cannot afford to put a 2*2 merger, or when your prosperity requirements are so low that the 1x1 houses you spam actually help your prosperity goal. eg: the prosperity goal is 20, but small casa have a prosperity rating of 35, so lots of small casa can actually benefit you here. tldr: mergers help reduce resource and logistics drain, while helping prosperity.
