I just got a PSTX 18 thin crash black colorsound. Very cool. Thanks Ebay.

That actually sounds pretty cool. Bet Carmine has gone through a ton of them. I had a 10" Sabian AA China Splash back in the 90s. I loved it except they put this grommet on the hole that rattled every time it was struck. I couldn't figure out how to remove it and it was just too annoying, like a rivet. Bzzzzzz. So, away it went. Don't know what Sabian was thinking when they did that.

Very interesting vid John, can't remember seeing this cymbal before, certainly not bad sounding, as you say, very China like, don't know how well it would cut through but no doubt Carmine uses it spectacularly, cheers again 👍

Thanks Phil, it’s actually extremely loud in the room(surprisingly!)My ears were definitely ringing afterwards! Cheers for commenting!

You should try to get your hands on the 12" version. I heard one once and it was AWESOME!!! I'm not of an EFX cymbal guy, pretty traditional, but that thing was killer!!

I had a 20 inch PANG cymbal by Zildjian. This was back when I played out more; also was playing out with different styled groups. I believe in my limited collection of posted videos I am playing on one with Vic Firth Tala Wands. I would enjoy if you talking about non out there cymbals too. I'm sure you have equal insight to why you use and buy other cymbals that are out there. Btw, I can go with a sonic difference between crashes as either an inch difference, two inch difference, or same size but weight difference (as examples: 18 to 19, 18 to 20, 18 thin to 18 medium). Which do you feel works best for you and why?

Thanks for commenting. At present I’m talking about slightly unusual, rare or ‘lost’ cymbals simply because there are so many videos out there covering the regular stuff. In terms of crashes, I’m a fan of very thin, fast cymbals. My faves are Paiste Sig fast crashes, 602 paper thins or Zildjian thin crashes. I don’t have to hit them hard for them to speak!

Great. So when you are using any of the above listened crashes, what is the difference between the two you use in order to create a sonic difference? I have seen a 16 and an 18 on your kit. Do you think a two inch difference sits in a mix better as announcing chore changes (or announcing any changes) than an one inch difference? Thank you.@@honourisdrumming

@@philphilison1623 I like a clear pitch difference between them, a variety of tone also in order to announce core changes. However it’s also what I like the sound of and what’s needed for that particular musical situation. Sometimes I use the same sized crash cymbals but of different weights-again, depends on what I’ve been hired to play.

I think three groups of set ups announce core changes best: one inch difference, two inch difference, and same size but different weights. I think they all work very well to that end. Lately I have been leaning on the one inch difference. It seems to announce very clearly when announcing changes within a song. @@honourisdrumming

It's got a weird "wowsh" sound --- like a Sabian thunder sheet (flat panel cymbal). When Carmine played with Vanilla Fudge on Fallon (kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKbMpHqhe8h3jqs), you can hear him play the shade cymbal at 1:17-1:20. His other cymbals sound awesome, so that shade cymbal sounds kinda silly. It might sound better as a hi-hat top or a stack. Thanks for demo'ing it here; and nice playing!

Thanks! It’s a strange one, I’ve heard him use it live a few times and it sounds cool but I hear what you’re saying! A real drumming curiosity! Cheers for watching and contributing to the discussion-if you haven’t subscribed please do! 🙏

Hilarious video John. Coool cymbal. Maybe you should use it as a lamp shade rather than putting it on the wall? Just saying…

Thanks Chris-I question the safety aspect of using a brass lampshade though, regardless of how cool it would look ;)Cheers for commenting!
