I was a self-taught drummer in my younger days. I haven't played in years. I'm 71 years old now and I bought a drum kit and I saw your finger exercises. The left-hand pinky exercise was sad due to arthritis. But as difficult as this was, it caused me to see how much work it will take to even become a mediocre drummer. But I'm sure that with practice and hard work I can learn to play again. Thanks for showing me where I need to concentrate my focus. Any tips would be appreciated.

Thank you so much for this video. Was struggling past couple months with getting my left and right hand equal after some time off drums. Realised it was mainly my fingers on my left hand. tried mainly different left leading patterns and playing chains of quavers and semi quavers on it. After a single session can already feel improvement. Could barely hold the stick steady in my left hand with just the index and pinky finger. left hand starting to feel natural again.

Thank you! This instruction is what finally made me understand (and feel, which is the most improtant) the reason why my left hand was unable to even get close to the right hand ability when doing 3 or 4 consecuituve note patterns in the first page of stick control. I have been trying to address this for some weeks now, and now I have a clear path for practice. Will keep focusing on these excercises. Really hope that another gem of a video like this pops up in the future.

Excellent educator Maria. Thank you. One question..... when transitioning from French to American and German grip, you lose the snap of the fulcrum, correct? So it's all just fingers?
@MariaWulfMusic
@MariaWulfMusic 4 ай бұрын
Hello, it's kind of difficult to answer without us demonstrating back and forth. The fulcrum is still there when you are in American grip and it can be fluid. Meaning, The fulcrum can still be maintained either in the first finger and thumb, or what I typically do, change the fulcrum to middle finger and thumb. Technically the index finger is still working the control but without as much pressure.

I stumbled across this vid after following the KZbin recommendation rabbit-hole... I confess that as a drummer of several decades, my first instinct was that I *didn't* like the cold clinical approach of this video. However, after watching it for another minute, I came to appreciate your approach here; it's clinical but very useful/applicable. Some of this utility comes through in watching you accidentally click your sticks. There's no (little?) editing being done to clean things up; it's a *practical* lesson. There's a ton of detail about how to practice, both in what is presented intentionally and some in what's not. Kudos! This is super helpful.

I have had lessons from a city orchestra percussion leader, another guy that only put me on stick control on snare, only. I lost interest in him, I was 11. Lessons from a decent teacher from a music store, and also from a multiplatinum celebrity drummer, and maybe someone I am spacing out, then I worked in a music store with a daily visit from various pro's that would hang out, do clinics, and many drummers on a daily basis, still it was this video that finally showed and explained this technique and how to practice it. Great lesson, thank you.
