The best way I found for depotting cardboard palettes is to put them in a shallow dish with some water in so that the cardboard backing soaks full of water. That dissolves the glue and the pans come out so easily without any force! Just in case you're depotting cardboard palettes again.

I've been a silent viewer for a long time - I finally wanted to say how much I love your videos! It's so rare to come across a literate, intelligent, and self-assured youtuber :) I've really enjoyed learning more about makeup and skincare through your channel, particularly since I grew up learning nothing about either topic. Would you consider doing a video on how you researched your skincare/hair routines and why you chose the products you did? Ie: a vitamin C serum, different oils, etc. I'm starting with basically no knowledge, but your videos have sparked an interest in trying to improve my very damaged skin as I get older!

Well filmed! I saw that the KZbin MUA, JKissa depots all her eyeshadows and I wondered why that was so important to her, aside from space and transportation, but seeing the pallette you created for yourself the other idea, I realised how inspiring it was to customise in this way. It changes the colour story and opens up new possibilities.

Danielle Thilette So do I but I still depotted them! And I don’t regret it at all. I can’t stay within one palette to create a look to save my life, so it was something I needed to do. I use the shadows so much more often afterwards! I still keep both the cardboard packaging & the paper boxes in a drawer, and I don’t intend to ever throw them away. If I manage to get some space, I’ll probably cut up the paper boxes, laminate them and hang the artworks in my room someday. The only JP I still keep intact is my Saharan II because it’s an absolute beauty that’s just perfect the way it is, they’re all unique shades that I literally memorised and I reach for them all the time. It’s also my only 9 pan Juvia’s palette, so it’s much smaller and easier to manage than the Magic or the Masquerade 💛💜

I love this idea, and the video angle that gives us such a great view of what you are doing. I have 4 palettes that I want to de-pot into 1 or 2 favorites. My palettes are plastic though, so I have been watching videos using the dental floss method. Day 20 of my no-buy. Success, but lots of temptation. I’ve decided to keep your first year readily accessible so that I can view your journey as I go through mine. Also watching your view list suggestions, and much less product reviews. Loved this! Dental floss is pretty useful for depotting product out of plastic packaging if you don't want to use heat; heat can actually ruin the product if you're not quick and careful enough. It's tricky though. Not gon' lie--I've actually sliced my fingers with floss because it was wrapped around too tight.

What you could do if the glue is being stubborn is remove the cardboard that has the pans glued (like what happened to the Festival palette) and then put that piece on a container with a bit of water and just let it soak, the cardboard gets so soft you can just punch through it with your fingers. Bonus because sometimes the glue is water soluble and it’ll just peel off the pan on its own.

If I ever depot another Juvias Place palette I will remember to warm the back up. I think I had so many mattes crack when I depotted the palettes because I did not use heat. Using a straightener just wasn't very practical but a space heater or the top of your stove with an oven on should work well. I'm so curious about how you set up your palettes once your declutter is done. I've been toying with how to arrange my colors to inspire myself more. I have a massive palette from Adept that I stopped using because I was having issues with the cracked mattes getting every where. I've given up in salvaging them and I think the large palette would be good for me to mix in my greens, blues purples and pinks. If I don't do that I am thinking about applying a new challenge I am setting for myself. I want to be able to make (at least) 3 looks I enjoy out of each palette that I own. I'm planning to invest more so in singles more moving forward than palettes but I plan to make this a bar I set for each palette I buy in the future. The only exception will be if it is a companion palette to add extra color to my collection.

Cut up the cardboard first. Then apply heat. Use the holes you discover when you break down the packaging. Pushing from the back pops them right out. Consider the option of sticking a tiny piece of paper to the stubborn glue on the bottom of the pan. You can label it with the shade name or remove it later. When you've got a palette that has a lot of glue on it to cardboard, it's easier just to cut the cardboard around the pan and lift the pan with the paper .

I depot cardboard palettes from Lorac, Morphe, Benefit, etc. by removing the pans still in the cardboard from the one-piece cover. Second, I peel back the paper on the edge of the one remaining tray to reveal the three layers of cardboard. I put my knife between the second and third layer (third layer being the bottom layer). That allows me to wiggle the knife to free the pans from the bottom layer (glue layer) with the pans secure in their designated spot during this process, which prevents them from moving as they are being freed up. That prevents shadows from being warped, which is what causes the shadows to shatter. I haven't lost a shadow yet!

What does a girl do, I come here to KZbin and search "depot eye shadows from palette" and I nearly squealed when this video came up in the search. I wonder if it is because I am subscribed to your channel, regardless I thought you would like to know this detail. And I learned great tips from your video, putting on the heater, the xacto knife and that the mats are a bit fragile. I am so excited to make a piece of art work with my palette and my shadow singles!

Depotting is on my list of things to do soon. As my no buy year is progressing, im realizing how many eyeshadow palettes i actually have but do not like. I currently only like 1 palette. Ill take what i like from them all and pass on the extra shadows. Im ready for an eyeshadow collection overhaul.

Is it weird that I liked seeing the pile of destroyed packaging at the end? 😉 Very nice job getting these shadows depotted with so few casualties.

Hi thank you for sharing this process. I’ve been wanting to depot a couple of palettes. I just feel awful getting rid off shadows. I need to explore my feelings on why. I know I won’t use them. Anyway thanks for sharing and a lot of success in Portland.

Hi Hannah, sending love from Malaysia! I'm actually digging all your old videos trying to look for the one single RED ORANGY shadow you mentioned you depotted from Juvia's place. I gone through so many videos and I still couldn't find which palette it is from! Do you mind sharing it again? I really appreciate it! love

it was fun to see your process. I just did this myself, and it was surprising to see how many shadows were almost exactly the same color! like, how many of the same shade do i need anyway?! it made it much easier to pare it down to what i really love and wear

It will be interesting to see which versions of the warm light blue you keep since you had a couple options in each palette. And I mean how many orangey brown shades do they think we need anyways? That's the biggest reason I never picked up that JH Morphe palette. I've decided nothing bigger than 12 pans & preferably 6-9 pans or I just buy singles since I've got my neutrals covered. All my larger palettes are getting donated to Project Beauty Share since they're pretty much going unused & are like new. Great video as always, very inspiring.

I'll be really curious to see what kind of combinations you make with all of your singles that eventually make the cut.

Sometimes I think my ultimate goal for my eyeshadow is to depot everything and have only my 'excellent-for-me' collection of singles. To me it would be the ultimate expression of makeup as a functional object, an object whose function is to create beauty on my face, rather than be beautiful in its packaging. But I'm a long way from doing that!

I don't think I'd be able to do it for the palettes I really appreciate in and of themselves. But with these "love some shadows hate the color story" palettes it's a no-brainer!

Great video Hannah! I feel the itch to depot some stuff now! I hope my Naked palettes are not be too comfy in their current location! P.S. I think my cat’s a fan, too! She was watching intently.

I went on a de-potting spree several years ago and it just breaks my heart to crack any of them so I don’t know if I have it in me to ever attempt again. Love watching other people do it though!

When I depotted the Alamar palette two shadows smashed but I repressed them and they are fine, but I wish I had some heat source I could have put them on safely. The glue was so strong on mine

At the beginning, I'm thinking how I'd be wearing safety goggles to do this, and at the end, I'm noticing how similar all the palettes look, laid out together. Cool video.

Could a native speaker explain what exactly a heater is? I think of it as a radiator, something to heat a room with, but that canˋt get that hot (at least our radiators canˋt)- so is it an oven where I bake food? Or something completely different? I am asking because the heating up of the palettes is the biggest problem for me...
@ninamicanovic86

I think a radiator is correct! Folks also sometimes buy little portable heaters (like mini radiators), but I would say it's usually a radiator :)

yes, it's just the heating unit in my house! it's not a portable one in this case, but you could definitely use one of those.
