Honestly I was really happy with this one being salvaged because my very first model locomotive was very similar to this. I got a Riverassi J. W. Bowker back in 2010 at a used train show, and although its in need of repair, but over the years I’ve been gathering parts to get my first locomotive back to it’s former glory, even using paper clips and Christmas hooks in place of the crank shaft. I’m so close to getting it back working, I just need a screw for the crankshaft for the wheels, and find a new cow catcher. Nostalgia aside, great video, can’t wait for more :D

Hi Sam! Glad you were able to get this one running. I mainly work with Rivarossi's, and you never want to take their motors completely apart. They are designed to be sealed, and in order to clean the commutator, you should take the motor brushes out, drop the slightest bit of IPA in there, and let it flush itself out. Other than that, like you did, the slightest bit of oil on the bearings is all you need! While not the smoothest motors out there, they are extremely reliable! Hope to see more Rivarossi on the channel!
@SamsTrains3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot mate - I have actually opened them up before and it benefited hugely from a proper clean of the bearings and commutator - but this one was too tough! Quite impressed with how well it worked after just a drop of oil! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

I don't know the timeline of Rivarossi 4-4-0 manufacture but I have my own one of these that is slightly newer. It came with an updated motor, smaller flanges, and traction tires, but everything else was the same. The locomotive itself is too large for HO scale - it matches more closely to OO so the locomotive is the proper size compared to all your others. The tender on the other hand is HO scale. Why they did this, I don't know, and they didn't bother fixing it for the updated versions. I'm glad to see that you got yours working, it is a beautiful locomotive.

I was rebuilding a very smiliar Rivarossi loco yesterday. Mine is the all black V&T 'Genoa' which is mechanically identical. I think I spent four hours on it, but I also did away with ferrying current via the drawbar and a number of "Hops" between moving contact surfaces. Soldered wire directly to axle pickups, ran a plug in wire between loco and tender instead of the unreliable drawbar.

Been waiting for this ever since you showed it in a tour of your closet. I have more than a dozen of these engines that I have reworked with DCC sound decoders. You were actually lucky to get it running. The earlier versions had a different pickup system in the engine and were actually more reliable. This type with the little spring loaded plungers can be difficult.. While they look to be an improvement over the original pickups, they really don't work as well. There is also a real problem with the construction of the engine body. The axles rest in plastic slots that can wallow out over time and the screws holding the bottom plate go into holes in the plastic body that can easily break if over tightened. Really enjoyed the video.

Back when my parents used to work at the "Astroworld" amusement park in Houston, Texas, my dad was the conductor on a reproduction of a famous member of the Class, the Western & Atlantic Railroad (W. & A. EDIT: Also nice that most of the symphonic bands I was in tended to like the song "The Great Locomotive Chase", so I got to play the part with the Hubcap that represented the Raiders tearing up the rails.

Nice save, like watching James Bond defuse the ticking bomb. I had a couple of the Bachmann, the older tender motored ones, very similar, if not just about identical, to this Rivarossi piece. typically run on a micro layouts of 15 inch curves, the drive shafts, which were not hexagonal like yours, but had pinions, routinely wore down said pinions to a nub after a few hours. Then, the flimsy pickups on the tender bogies would loosen up causing an erratic rate exacerbated by the torque of the shaft twisting the tender. Spent many hours of cleaning and adjusting pick ups, but without any significant success. Tried replacing the shaft with a bit of flexible rubber RC fuel tubing, but this didn't respond well to tight radii. Bagged the lot, sold them on eBay for restoration/parts and was surprised they sold rather quickly. After seeing a friend's retooled Bachmann, with onboard sound and locomotive mounted motor (the sound works on DC, too, I ended up with two for revenue service on my new, in progress, micro layout, "Mormon's Gulch." So far, they run nicely. I'd like to convert at least one to Dcc, just to also control the sound function, and maybe run another on same line, as analogue. Rather ambitious for my level of ability. Do you suggest a brand of decoder? Something simple, for a simpleton?

I am rather enjoying this series. When it comes to an end, I'm hoping for a short bit of running with all the salvaged engines to see it out.

Many thanks!! That'd be a good idea - but some of them I'm selling on during the series! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

If it was a live TV show with audience there should be some guy yelling "SCRAP-MAN SCAP-MAN" in the crowd at each difficulty (or even wound it that case) encountered. And that would probably be me ;) (evil grin).

Nice race work there. And the scrapman still looked hungry. Have you collected The Italian Job Minis yet?

Aerosol electrical contact cleaner perhaps? Flood it while turning the armature might be the best option for the commutator? Great job though. Loving this series.
