Lisa Gerrard is one of the finest vocalists on the planet. The “language” she sings in is actually her own made up tongue, through which she expresses feeling and emotion rather than rather than any explicit literal meaning. DCD have an amazing catalogue well worth diving into - thoroughly captivating.

Elisabeth Fraser of Cocteau twins does the same thing. sings in English, Gaelic, and her own made up words.

Dead Can Dance are an astounding band. Very unique. Everything they do sounds ancient but somehow relatable. I've been a big fan for decades. Brendan sings mostly in English. His songs are very different and feel medieval to me.

Glossolalia is not an official language or even a name of any language. Its the term for a personal, made-up language that kids make up often in the stage just before learning language in proper. Lisa never forgot hers and it stayed with her because she would always enjoy singing to herself in it. Lucky for us...

For a more aboriginal and tribal feel check out their tune "Song of the Stars". If you want to feel moved by Glossolalia check out "Sanvean".

I've been a fan of DCD since the 1980s and unfortunately I never saw them live. This is one of my favorite songs of theirs and I just love dancing to it alone in my room. Just so ethereal!

I saw their Into the Labyrinth tour in Vancouver back in the 90's. They opened with Yulunga (Spirit Dance), From the opening note the show was stunning. One of the best I have ever seen. I was looking forward to their '22/'23 tour but it was cancelled due to health issues. Not sure if it was Lisa or Brendan, but I hope they get well soon. You will never understand some of Lisa's lyrics because they are her own musical language. Just enjoy. I find it transcendental .One of my favourite artists since I bought their first album. Where does the time go?

So glad a reviewer has discovered this sublime music. They are incapable of producing bad music. Anything you do by them will be good, or great. Lisa probably has the best female voice alive, and David Hykes, the best male voice. Dimash is pretty incredible too. "Now we are Free" from "Gladiator" is a good next one. "Sanvean" from "Toward the Within" another. They do a superb version of "Within You, Without You" by the Beatles. Their name has to do with bringing the inanimate world alive through music. Dead world can dance.

I saw them at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville in 2012, and far beyond saying it's the best concert I've ever attended, it was the most amazing performance I've ever been witness to. The first song was like the sky was opened and the host of Heaven was pouring the delight of the Almighty upon us in sound. I and every adult around me was in tears before the first song was over.

Yes. Lisa grew up in Sydney and in her neighborhood were mostly Greeks & Turks who when they talked to her it was in English but when they sang they sang of course in their native tongue so as a little girl she thought that when you talk you speak English but when you sing you make up the words.

I’m a longtime fan from around ‘84 as well. They were on the same 4AD label as another great band, The Cocteau Twins, and even joined together with some other artists to form an epic supergroup known as This Mortal Coil who did an unforgettable song called “Song To The Siren” which was very popular around the mid- 80’s being featured in a fragrance ad (if I remember correctly..). Dead Can Dance are absolutely stellar and always enchanting as you quite aptly described them here. Lisa Gerard has an amazing voice, but so does Brendon Perry as he does vocals on about 40 percent of their songs (“The Cardinal Sin” and “Indoctrination (A Design for Living)”are two of my favorites featuring his vocals. As far as the illustrious and extensive body of work goes for Dead Can Dance, a pinnacle achievement that absolutely floored me is a live version of their song “Cantara” from the band’s Live record “Toward The Within”. It’s an absolutely jaw dropping performance which builds to a very passionate and emotional climax by the end of the song.. the kind of thing that can impact the listener in quite a profound and memorable way. Top notch reaction as always Harri.. thank you for another wonderful reaction to another great band that hasn’t ever been focused on making run of the mill pop radio “hits”. Though we all love those tunes, this kind of music dares to dive deeper than what radio can allow because of their formatting policies selling ad space... it’s bands like these which inspired us to build better home stereo systems and more thoroughly explore composition and more diversified styles and sounds. Cheers! ☮️

Oh, what a beautiful choice. I love DCD. Know then since the early 90th. It was my dream to see them live one time. Have seen them in Berlin I think 2017. It was a pleasure. My ears love her voice but also his voice. Persephone and Song to the siren are my favourite songs. Thank you for your statement! Greetings from Germany

It sounds like Greek, and it sounds like Greek because the Anabasis is the title of a splendid literary work written by Xenophon, a Greek general who commanded 10,000 Greek mercenaries hired by Cyrus the Younger to seize the throne of Persia (5th century BC). Cyrus was killed in battle and the Greeks had to retire to their distant homeland with great difficulty. "Anábasis, or the withdrawal of the 10,000" is the first literary work with a novel structure. It is exciting, highly recommended. PS I like your reactions. You get emotional with the same music that I get emotional with. I send you a hug.

Dead Can Dance - for all the semi-religious profundity that the music either tries to convey or has attached to it by others - are hard to disassociate from memories of the 1980s and early 1990s when, for better or worse, Lisa and Brendan were both thinking-person's sex symbols. Reluctantly associated with Goth culture (neither of them really looked the part) and considered precursors to the ethereal-goth subgenre. Their earliest work (especially the stuff taped in Australia) is rockier, more post-punk/positive-punk but by their 1987 album they'd become much more neo-classical, and even darker in tone. Two DCD albums everyone agrees on as masterpieces are Aion and Into The Labyrinth - newcomers might start there and work backwards, then forwards.
