Christian, the "desktop mechanics" in my case, I dissed the wheel hub spacers because, well, I for one was surprised that in your country where everthing seems to be banned and so tightly regulated with regard to vehicle mods, that you're even allowed those spacers. Here in Australia they are illegal in every state unless oem factory fitted, now that doesn't mean everyone abides by the law, but if your vehicle's involved in an accident that calls for forensic examination, "you better get a lawyer son, better get a real good one". Being from a mechanical background I understand why. So even if you think it "improves the looks, stance, handling, whatever" it doesn't help to make it legal here at all. So very happy you can have them there and that you love them so much. Next time I buy a used car I want to buy it from a guy like you, your preparation to sell is a credit to you, and no, I won't want the spacers, thanks.

They would be legal in the UK, but you would have to inform your insurance company and they would, very likely, charge you extra as it's a modification. Mine tried to charge me an extra £200 p.a. for any modification. 😖

@ 11.29. Christian makes reference to the INA timing belt kit for the LR. I used to work for a German company that manufactured market leading printing equipment. INA bearings were widely used in the machines. I was told that as well as being of exceptional quality, INA bearings had a large reserve of grease/lubricant and double overlapped end caps. So these bearings were long lasting and virtually impermeable to paper dust and set - off powder ingress.

Good advice from you on the engine oil, in my 2001 Toyota Landcruiser Colorado I used to use good quality Castro oil and change it every 5000 miles and changed the oil filter every 10000 miles. When i bought the car it had done 116,000 miles, when I sold it recently it had done 385,000 miles, used no oil between oil changes and went like a rocket. So I quite agree, frequent oil changes are considerably cheaper than a new engine and a lot easier.

Great video - as always - thanks. Had to watch on Tuesday as I was travelling in Cornwall over the weekend. Proved that my D4 is definitely NOT a "Mall Crawler" as I have mud on it. 😂 A Cornish "dual carriagweway" is a narrow road with tramlines and grass down the middle 🤣 and I travelled lots of those, as well as unpaved tracks and a mud bath where I was vistiting where visitors often get stuck - no problem for my D4, even with the stock Pirelli M&S tyres. 👍

Oh lord I get flashback to the 7 year service at the dealers “the body must come off to change the timing belt “ £1500 😮 I miss my Disco but not the running costs . 😂❤
@suryaprihadi22588 ай бұрын
Great video Chris & Vera, as always. I prefer timing belt over timing chain any day, based on a DIY. 01. Belt is much more quiet compared to chain. 02. I don't mind the shorter life of the timing belt vs timing chain, as I can DIY it with ease. In the past I always replace my timing belt 1/2 time the recommended KM, as I redline my engine all the time gear 1 , 2 and 3. 03. This is the common fact I hate the most about typical engine design with timing chain. A timing belt is dry, no need engine oil for lubrication. Timing chain must be oil bath. There are many engines where its coolant path will have to cross over the timing chain area, because often the mechanical coolant circulation pump is at the front of the engine , sitting at what we call lower/main timing region cover. So coolant must cross over timing chain oil bath region and seal or o-ring is used.Timing chain itself can last a long time, not so with the o-ring or seals, because they are elastomer and usually 15 years is as safe as we can expect it to not swell or heat damaged or whatnot. Depending on country where the car is located at. Hotter climate countries, suffer faster o-ring/seals failure. When this coolant cross-over seal/o-ring leaks, it leak into the timing chain region and coolant will mix with engine oil. Just like how oil cooler gasket failed and the deadly cocktail happen. To replace this kind of hell located o-ring/seals is a very expensive job as everything timing chain + guides + sprockets and etc etc need to be removed to access such a cheapo coolant o-ring/seals at the engine block side. Cry cry....... It is so soothing to see your engine is still using BELT...sweeeeettttt 😍

Don't let this put you off. I was almost put off buying a Discovery after watching Christian keep saying how reliable Toyota's are - but I *did* buy a Discovery 4 last year - and it's such a wonderful vehicle I just can't stop driving it. Long journeys, no problem (Oxford to Helstone at the tip of Cornwall this last weekend), and it's such a joy to drive that it's the only vehicle I have ever driven that I don't mind being stuck in a traffic jam. But I did get one of the very last ones with a very low milage - so I will have to use 5w/30 until I get to about 100,000 km (according to Christian) when I can safely switch to 5w/40.
@jamest51498 ай бұрын
A small correction from a desk top mechanic… its not ‘belt dust’, when the engine is running the belt ‘polishes’ the cam gears etc, these are steel so then flash corrode between engine running cycles, when the engine next runs its polishes off the corrosion which is the red dust you see on the plastic covers… note this is not normally evident on LR engines and this is entirely your fault, your engine is too oil tight! The oil leaks protect the cam gears etc from rusting 😂

It is always good to concentrate on your own work and do it right...! Full service is not needed if you are going to sell the Vehicle. Changing the Timing Belt and Auxiliary Belts is enough because some new owners want to do some maintenance themselves or Have their Mechanic, do it..! Hi Christian and Vera, love the weekly videos. I hope you don’t mind me posting a comment on this video regarding something you mentioned in passing when you were going over your latest disco 4. It was the heater diverted valve that is fitted alongside fuel burning heater. You said if you don’t have one fitted you won’t get warm air into the cabin if you start the FBH with the engine off as the heat will go to the block first. I noticed the the Mall crawler doesn’t have this valve fitted but your latest acquisition. Discovery four does. My disco 4 doesn’t either but I would like to retro fit one so I get the warm air in the cabin. Any chance you could include adding the heater valve in a future video? Either way keep making videos on the LR4.

The reason why there are so many ‘Desktop Mechanics’ on your channel is that the actual sitting and watching your videos is about as ‘Mechanical’ as most of us actually get with our Land-rovers! The worrying thing is that having watched your channel, we are amazed that our own LR’s keep going at all. However, for those who rubbish LR’s because in reality they are envious of us, we pretend that the bad stories they hear about LR reliability are completely false and that they only apply to those who don’t look after their LR’s properly. Therefore we have to be a bit careful which non LR users we recommend to what your channel, for fear that they think that the only way to avoid the problems is to do all the sort of maintenance repairs you do so well. The reality is that most of us LR drivers have to pretend that we are all ’Real mechanics’ instead of ‘Desktop mechanics’ and hope like hell that our LR’s somehow just keep going! Nice to see though from you, how it should be done. So the truth is that we have to have all our fingers and toes well and truly crossed!

Someone is going to get one of the best maintained Discovery 4's in Europe! Great content as ever 👍

They could have auctioned it to the channel subscribers.

Wow. Where can I get those aluminium bolts for the tow bar cover? New Discovery 4 owner here, and mine came with one already missing, and I broke the other one the first time I used it!

They are 10.000 $ each. Thanks for noticing them. Christian

Of one thing i am certain, unless you can maintain your Disco yourself (with a lift), you need to be a millionaire .all the best from England. Ps, i just had the coolant changed on my eight year year old Volvo est (65 reg) even though it hasn’t even done 20000 miles yet.

I've been detailing my truck for 2 days and just now making it to the front...I have all the necessary brushes and that's why it's taking so long. There's 5 type of brushes that I have and if you didn't use all of them in the same spot @least 5 to 6 times your truck is not clean....is it a crime to call it a truck versus a car 🤔 😅😊

I don’t believe in oil extraction vacuum tools either. I’ve had people say main stealers use them but that is zero comfort to me. The manufacturer is all about minimum fleet cost so as fast and cheap to 100k. No way a vacuum system gets the crud out of the sump like warm oil flowing out of a sump plug. Hot oil, open the sump and feel the love as you pour fresh oil in at the top.

The "peeing on floor/doctor advice" joke, alone, made this entire video one of the best! 🤣 Regarding buying your LR4 (which I would love to have!), I wonder if I could even legally drive it here in the USA, because it has no DEF emissions system. My 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 V-6 Diesel has a DEF system (and come to think of it, so did my old 2010 BMW 335d straight 6 Diesel, which was a blast but an absolute turd of an engine).
