Infection Free Zone continues and we battle our way through our first zombie apocalypse Winter in Northampton. The snow falls, the days shorten, the temperature drops, and all these things cause an issue for us.
The cold and the snow mean that we can't grow any food, which obviously isn't ideal for our survival plans, and the shorter days mean there's more darkness for the zombie hordes to roam around in!
Despite this we do make some good progress. Our cookhouse is finally built so we can work on some proper meals (with the limited resources we have on account of the cold) and we're able to scavenge quite a lot of materials.
Our brave squads venture out further into Northampton, bringing back all sorts of goodies. We happen across some sort of military base where there's the potential for guns and ammo, and we finally get round to picking up some knowledge!
This means we can build a research lab and finally begin unlocking new technologies and bonuses to help us survive those troublesome brain-eating folks!

“The Mad Virus” has spread throughout the world with the speed of jet planes. The infected are highly aggressive, fast and strong.
In a couple of weeks, society collapsed. Cities are empty. There is no electricity, no water, and no food. Yet, there are a few survivors...
Type in the name of the city or town, download the map and start playing! Thanks to OpenStreetMap’s real-world data you can choose any place in the world for your survivors.
Establish a new “Infection Free Zone” wherever you choose. Set up shelters and production facilities. Adapt existing buildings to new needs. Build new farms and power houses. Establish defenses with walls, gates, and towers.
Utilize your knowledge of the city. What is the best place to defend? Where were the grocery stores, where were the pharmacies? Where would you look for weapons?
Remember that it’s dangerous to search the old buildings, there might be some infected lurking in the dark!
Each night your settlement might be attacked by large hordes of the infected. Fight them off with every tool available - melee and ranged weapons, vehicles, walls and light. Research a vaccine or a cure for ultimate victory, or just enjoy rebuilding entire cities!
Your Zone is not the only one that exists. Your survivors will surely find other surviving groups. Some will be friendly and willing to trade, but others will be extremely hostile. There might be some fighting involved!

AND, I just found out, you can hold down 'shift' and click on buildings that are unexplored and the squad will go there, search it and pick up anything they find, then go to the next. If they get full, they will come drop off and automatically go back and keep exploring what you marked. I like it ;)

(What is it with Penge and corrupted civ/kingdom management games lately? Glad you could "replay" it back to this!) 15:10 Who builds a restaurant in All Saint's Church? 😁 43:25 Guess you did need one more tower to the left of the other three, but removing the rightmost tower? *shrugs* 52:15 you did already recover the meat/wood, no worries! You do realize you can scavenge with multiple squads in big buildings? 1:03:00 and yes unclear but *did* run over baddies in said car at night! (And since I'm not playing the game I'm not sure but I bet your medical research was in the technical books area [as was confirmed 31:05] 1:07:40 Do remember to build your hospital after researching it.) Great session Penge, well done!

Really enjoying this series and can't wait to see more! Some things I've learned (that you probably already know, but others may not): The game only programs one entrance/exit point per building, so despite it being bigger than most stadiums with multiple doors there is only one way into and out of the Grosvenor Mall (or any other building). If you want to keep a scavenging job, but don't want people to work on it that day, instead of canceling it you can just put the number of workers to 0 for that day and then increase it later. Get more cars as soon as possible. You can also use them to kite the zombie hordes around while your towers/squads are picking them off so they're not attacking your buildings. You are getting a massive penalty farming during the winter months, so you should take the people off the fields for those couple months as they are really just being wasted when you can have them scavenging or building or whatever. When you repair a building, it makes it useless until completed (i.e., if it's a shelter, people cannot live there so you will get a debuff; if a warehouse you cannot store anything there), so make sure it is repaired quickly to get it back on line. When you are not researching any topic, the people in your lab will be working on more research data points so you don't always have to try and scavenge them. Don't forget about your antenna because (once built) you will be able to invite in survivors to your base. Finally, if you're out of guns, you can tell the towers to use bow and arrow, which does less damage but does not run out of ammo.

You will also have an easier time fighting them if u kite them as they come in to your base and lead them to the bldgs that have your teams. That way you are able to shoot them down as they get closer to your bldgs with your teams in them. Hope that makes sense. Use the kite maneuvers in conjunction with the main base method I mentioned in my last message and u have a good defense to take out the hordes as they approach your base at night.

The... kite manoeuvres? My knowledge of such a thing is poor, I'm not quite sure what kite means, other than a fun thing to fly in the sky!

If you get the car up and running you can kite the zombies, they always run after the car just keep them running around your towers

You can queue up multiple building searches by shift + right click though you need to keep an eye on them as it's a little finicky. I would advise taking the car out for a run and pick up as many cars as you can. You can split one squad down and bring back 3 more cars in one trip. And when clearing buildings of infected is always best to two or more squads to prevent unnecessary injuries (or you can cheese it by exiting the building after every second burst of fire, the infected wont get a chance to fight back)

I get the impression that the reason the car starts driving automatically (when you put people in it) in the morning is because it wants to drive to HQ and unload its stuff

haven't played with the new patch yet so maybe it's fixed-but you can click on empty buildings and have your people tear them down for bricks, metal and wood-there was a bug in the game where if you click a bldg, the deconstruct button was missing-if it's still the case, when you click an empty building, click just to the right of the wrench icon and you can tear them down. It's good to tear things down, especially the smaller stuff to give infected or other baddies less places to hide, and give your settlement a bit more room for fields and whatnot.

That's still a thing in the game, yes. We got rid of two small buildings near to the HQ last time and I think off-camera I got rid of another one too.

You can queue up your scavanging by shift holding down shift and right clicking each building you want to scavage. This will command your squad to auto scavage those selected building. Also, you can queue them to auto go to the warehouse or HQ by holding shift and right clicking the HQ or Warehouse after queuing the buildings you want to scavage.

Research the antenna it is extremely important!!! Select a squad and look at the bottom of your screen, queue order lets you send your units to multiple buildings so you don't have to micromanage them and they will return when full and go straight back out to get more, select multiple means you can select as many of your squads that you want and send them all to either scavage a building together which makes it faster or fight the enimies together

You can click the white to return squads to the HQ and you can press H to center yourself on the HQ

I imagine they can't put everything in the maps. I doubt you can play a map around 'Area 51'. Good vid.

Just so u know if you are going to run into a bldg it’s better to run into your home base because it has the most hp for one two when u have to repair something such as a tower it goes out of commission. When u repair your main base it does not go out of commission it is still usable. So when u want to use a bldg for defense while they are attacking I recommend using your main base as a bldg to allow them to attack as it will hold up better than any other bldg. the other bldgs will still attack the zeds but u won’t have to deal with the negatives of the other bldgs from your main base.

That is true but if the zombies are across the other side of the base out of range of the HQ then our squads are no use in there! That's why we tend to spread them around a little bit so they can cover a wider area.

I can't wait to play this. I'm very curious how the area you pick will affect weapon availability. Like, I wonder if you UK folks will earn less firearms while here in my home Texas there should be weapons in nearly every building. I mean, I doubt they did that. Seems like it would leave huge swaths of the lands nearly unplayable. But I'm still curious to test it.

I haven't played extensively in a variety of different locations yet, but it seems so. Playing in a sleepy English market town, it's been a struggle picking up firearms and anything over a pistol has largely been looted from raiders (who presumably are kind of pre-programmed), even then it's only been a few rifles and not much more. I'd need to test it and see a lot more from different places but it does seem to take the real local area into account.

Until you have more guns for your towers you should set them to use bows. They automatically have bows and they don't consume ammo. Also during the day you don't need guards in the towers. You could reassign them to do other stuff during the day, then put them back on guard duty at night.

Oh no no no, there's no way I'm faffing about with taking people out of the towers in the day and reassigning them at night, that's much too fiddly and time consuming! Plus we all know that I'd forget to put everyone back into the towers. They can stay in the towers and enjoy the view of Northampton.

You keep leaving your 2 squads doing nothing 😢, when the 4 squad resource bars are full they need to be returned and sent back for more salvage. Also maybe more fields?

It's difficult keeping the squads always doing something, particularly if you're doing other things elsewhere on the map! They're fine, the big thing is that everyone is still alive!

Whenever the towers don't have ammo u can switch them to bow and arrow

Ooohhh, I see! I thought they worked through what we brought back and turned it into science points but no, I see it now. We bring back scientific material and it immediately adds the science points and when there's no research underway the sciencey folks make more science points. I get it!

I agree, that is a bit odd. I assume the zombies are able to work out which buildings are in use and which are still abandoned, but yes the fact they attack an empty building is a bit strange.
