My favorite DoA song of all time and one of the most delicious, delightful songs of the 80s--the melody is so joyous even though the lyrics deal with the difficulty of gathering the courage to exit an unsatisfying relationship. There's actually quite a bit of lyrical depth which gets overlooked because of the extraordinarily catchy tune. That fizzy disconnect is certainly part of the song's brilliance. I have always adored the line "I Want Surprises," which is just sort of tossed off at the beginning of the song, but is entirely indelible. At least a few times each month I find myself singing that line, out of the blue. It just really resonates for me and presents itself over and over in my consciousness. I think part of the brilliance of the song too is that it really encapsulates Pete's personality as someone who was never content with maintaining the status quo--he was most assuredly someone who wanted surprises!
