I hope you guys enjoy this reaction! Very much apologize that I’m a bit stuffy during this recording. I ended up having a severe cold this entire week starting pretty much during this recording 🤪 and then of course yesterday I developed an ear infection 🙃 All this on top of that nasty storm two days ago that knocked out my internet for a while and flooded a part of my house, it’s been a very unlucky week! Nonetheless, thank you for watching ♥️

One really funny thing about this movie is that Ethan Hawke actually struggled terribly in school, and used getting this role as an excuse to drop out of college...so he could play a serious, dedicated student.
@SweetLou0523
@SweetLou0523 3 жыл бұрын
He also feels that Robin probably hated him. Hawke said he was very serious on set and didn't react well to Robins' constant antics which actually made Robins constantly hone in on him and try and draw a reaction out of him.

@SweetLou0523 Ethan said in an interview he felt like Robin must've hated how serious he was, HOWEVER, Robin told his agent to look into Ethan Hawke & said "that kid is going to be something special." His agent became Ethan's agent & still is to this day. Ethan said he'll forever be grateful to Robin for that.

There's this tiny detail I noticed that I love so much: Whenever Charlie contributes incorrect commentary, Mr. Keating will correct him, then follow up by saying, "Thank you for playing, Mr. Dalton." He's letting Charlie know that even if his commentary is incorrect, he still values and encourages his input. Best. Teacher. Ever.

I mean to be honest Charlie sort of takes the message Carpe Diem to heart the most. From the start of the movie he comes off cocky, but I don't think he is mean spirited. I also don't think he is a dick head in this at any point. When he says that line in the cave about meaning what they say, it really strikes a cord with me. It symbolizes that he is trying to invoke what Mr. Keating has been saying. I also think he starts the movie as the most free thinker.

Out of all the main characters in this movie, I always felt like Charlie was the one who would truly live the Dead Poet lifestyle in earnest. He ends up getting kicked out of school, and likely disowned by his family, but he still has his passion, his fierce individuality and his wealth of life experience at such a young age. I always felt that he definitely became a poet, and lived a fulfilling life of near-poverty during which he was far happier than his more well-off, traditionally minded classmates.

One especially notable actor in this film is Norman Lloyd, who plays the headmaster. He never got any really big roles, and this is probably the most famous one he ever had, but he has a quite likely permanent world record for both the longest acting career, and being the oldest working actor. He did his first film in 1933, and from then on was consistently working right up to his death just a few months ago at age 106. Some of his other noteworthy films are Hitchcock's Saboteur and Spellbound, Chaplin's Limelight, and Scorsese's The Age of Innocence, plus a regular role on the '80s medical show St. Elsewhere.

Actually something you may not have picked up while watching. The speech Puck (Neil’s character) gave when you thought he was going to choke. Was actually meant to represent Neil talking to his father and sharing his heart. The speech -while a quotation from Shakespeare- was supposed to, the directors said, represent the words Neil was wanting to say, which is why he put so much passion into the speech. And didn’t choke. But alas his father couldn’t look past and hear Neil’s heart, and didn’t listen to his words... the same way that Neil said his father would respond if Neil tried talking to him himself. Confirming to Neil that his father would never accept him as he was (even if that may not have been the case, that is how he saw it). SO well executed!

One of my favorite movies, especially since this film has a very serious undertone of queercoding in it. One huge metaphor is that Neil's passion for acting and his father disapproving him actually represents Neil's queerness and his father disapproving his "lifestyle". The most heartbreaking thing for me is that I genuinely think Neil's dad loved him and wanted what was best for him. When he talks about the sacrifices he made to get Neil into the school you can tell that he managed to create a better life for his child than he had when he himself was a child, and that he dreams of his son using this elite education to raise himself even higher and become a doctor. It is obviously a big financial strain to pay for the education, but he want to give his son the best possible chance in life that money can buy. And so, any extracurricular activities that takes away time for his studies is seen as meaningless and as adding no value or benefit to the ultimate goals for his future. And when he talks about acting, something the father certainly doesn't see as a realistic dream, nor something that is likely to offer any financial stability or job security long term, well he just thinks it is a matter of stamping out that foolishness and getting him back on track through military school, strict discipline and severe consequences for breaking the rules. He just forgets that crushing his son's dreams and hopes, and refusing to listen or giving him any say at all in his own future, risks crushing his spirit to the point of him committing suicide because he sees no other way out of this hopeless situation his father has forced him into. And then, worst of all, they choose to blame Keating rather than accept their own responsibility for what happened to Neil, which I get would be easier for them emotionally but still pisses me off

I can see it that way too but I also saw just how the father was too controlling, mapping everything out for him, even what school activities he can and cannot have, picking out his college and career for him like he was picking out his lunch or what clothes to wear and just not giving him a voice or allowing him any say to his own future even what he wants to do at school. He just treated more like just an object or playdough just something to be shaped an molded to whatever he wants that pleases him or just a obedient puppet rather than see him as a person who had his own dreams and goals and desires. He say him taking part in the school play as him losing some of that control that he had on him and he tried to regain it back through military school and doesn't see that by forcing his own ambitious desires on his son is not what's best for him but only makes him selfish because being a doctor is really the only thing the father wanted I don't even think the mother really cared about it as much as he did. I mean why only a doctor, why not a lawyer, professor, scientist or whatever, but he made his son feel that there was only one option for him in his future and it was whatever he decided. Neal just felt defeated and had now power or control in his life and he would have probably be miserable being a doctor rather than follow his own passion so he felt suicide was the only thing out for him. I too was angry at the father's attitude towards Keating, he was rude to him after the play and then wants to blame him rather than accept his own part in his suicide. Overall, I could never like the character even after his heartbreak over his son's death.

The real star of this movie is director Peter Weir, Australia's greatest filmmaker. This movie changed Robin's career from a Comedian to one of the best serious actors. Peter Weir also did the same with Harrison Ford's career in "Witness"(1985) and Jim Carrey's in "The Truman Show"(1998). Both of these are beautiful films. Another beautiful film of Peter Weir's is "The Year Of Living Dangerously"(1982) with Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver.

I really recommend Popeye, it is criminal under rated. It's fun, a wonderful adaptation of the cartoon/comic strip, it has awesome songs and there has never been a more pitch perfect casting then Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall as Popeye and Olive Oyl!

That is one of my favorite movies. Loved to see your eyes light up like fire as you watched the beginning when they were learning. I've worked with young people and to see them grasp truths as they understood concepts, is probably one of the best feelings a teacher can have. I'm honored to have watched it with you...well bits and pieces of it. Another movie you'd like is "White Squalls" with Jeff Bridges. Thanks again. Loved the reaction.

23:13 Scenes like this make me glad this kind of "discipline" was never used at any school _I've_ ever gone to. And I don't understand this notion that one should have a social environment, during the formative years, with only one _gender._ I remember, when I was in my teens, being _constantly_ distracted by my female classmates, but that's not an insult. If they had not been present, my life would've _sucked._

Tom Schulman who wrote the screenplay based this on some of his school experience and Todd was the guy who represented him at that age. Kurtwood Smith who played the father was asked years later what he made of the film, he said that the father does love his son but it shows in the wrong way, he smothers and controls him. At the premiere Kurtwood Smith took along an old male friend of his whose relationship with his son was just like that he played in the film. The lights went down the film played and when the lights went up hie friend was sobbing, he'd seen himself in the film played out and from that day on he changed his relationship with his son. That's why I act Smith said, plays or movies can and do change lives. It's about as Keating says following your gut your instinct, even in the face of the conformity that tries to tie you down, you must find your voice and use it, even at a price at a cost, it will cause you pain and you will suffer but thats the price we pay for thinking for ourselves and not following the herd. And Robin was genius here, so too the director Peter Weir.

I've only seen this mo ie a couple of times, while I love RW in it...the tragedy of the suicide and let alone the fact the Father just being too uptight and stern to give his son the break of wanting to have a creative outlet is heartbreaking. And what gets me is.....you just knoooow, years after his son's death, he won't ever see the fact that HE, not Keating....was responsible for it all. 😖 Anyways, one you should watch is- School Ties, it's got quite young actors- Brendan Fraser, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Chris O'Donnell in it. It's so good. St.Elmo's Fire is good also and has quite a few well known actors of the time. 😊

One of the greatest films ever made a true classic Dead Poets Society directed by Peter Weir starring Robin Williams, Robert Sean Leonard, Ethan Hawke, Kurtwood Smith and music score by Maurice Jarre. The film was a commercial success and received numerous accolades, including Oscars nominations for best director, best picture, and best actor for Robin Williams. The film won the BAFTA Award for Best Film, the Cesar Award for Best Foreign Film and the David di Donatello Award for Best Foreign Film. The famous line in this film is "Carpe diem. One of my absolute favorite Robin Williams roles, and a BEAUTIFUL movie!! I had the opportunity to see this when I was a young child with my mother. My mom wanted me to follow Keating's teachings in part because I love literature and always did. She's always been a bit of a hippie and she wanted me to always think for myself, so I was very lucky that way. I'm glad you liked this movie and I'm happy for you for being able to do this and use your free mind to make money. If it weren't for my body, I'd be using my free mind to do the same. It is a sad movie though, I agree, it shows you the danger of buckling under. Fantastic reaction, see you on the next one!!!

This is a movie that should be watched in every school. In an age where conformity and peer pressure reigns over our young, 'think the way I think' 'believe what I believe' it is imparative that the freedom to be who and what you want and are make a comeback in our society. The marching scene is so important in this fim, how they all eventually stepped to the same step and pace. It shows the way we so easily fall into line and follow the set pattern. Not that I think there shouldn't be bounderies and order, but to be truely a free person, you should be able to think and do what is right for you and not what the pack deems acceptable. This is sorely lacking in young people today.

@@thegladve Yes, and having an incredibly supportive father (may he RIP), I do not relate at all to that situation… but we all know parents of people in our lives that can be this way. I truly can NOT imagine my dad telling me not to chase my dreams, as he was a dream chaser himself. We only get one life to live and we can’t take money with us. I believe in doing what truly makes you happy, as long as you’re not hurting anyone of course. My dad lived to the fullest before he left us in May. This is definitely an amazing film. Along the same lines, I would recommend "Mona Lisa Smile" with Julia Roberts playing a professor at the prestigious Wellesley College, a private women's liberal arts college in Wellesley, Massachusetts. She teaches Art History instead of English Literature, and to older students than Robin's Mr. Keating, but she makes no less difference in the lives of these young women coming of age in the early 50's.

12:00 "Today, we're gonna be talking about William Shakespeare. Now, many of you have seen Shakespeare done very much like _this._ 'O, Titus, bring your friend hither.'' But if any of you have seen Mr. Marlon Brando, you know Shakespeare can be different." I feel a need to toss in _my_ two cents worth at this part of the movie. The _problem_ with Shakespeare, at least in the US (I think) is the way we _treat_ him. We treat him as a _novelist;_ someone whose work is better understood when _read._ I mean, how many classes that involve the _study_ of Shakespeare actually assign copies of a _script_ he has written as one of their _textbooks?_ This is _wrong._ Shakespeare was a _playwright._ He wrote his work to be _performed._ _That's_ when you understand it. _That's_ when it comes alive and makes sense; not just the _character,_ but the _words._ In _Hamlet,_ the title character is a man of _rage._ Right from the beginning, he has fallen victim to a tremendous _injustice,_ but as the story continues, he investigates and finds a whole new _layer_ to that injustice. It's shocking. It's infuriating. But this does not come across from the _script._ It comes across when a skilled actor is casted to _play_ Hamlet. Let's not take umbrage to the way Shakespeare is _performed._ Let's take umbrage to the fact that so many people have tried to understand Shakespeare from _scripts_ he has written, accordingly come under the impression that he's incomprehensible and _boring,_ and opted not to _see_ his performances. By this, we do him a _disservice._
