Dead Space lore is the ultimate example of Cosmic Horror. No matter what the protagonists do, no matter how hard they fight, the Necromorph threat is never defeated. It is delayed or momentarily halted, but whether it be by the dark mutterings of a Marker or via the actions of the cult of Unitology the Necromorphs always return bigger and stronger. In Dead Space Humanity never wins, they merely delay the inevitable.

It is both cosmic, and lovecraftian. Lovecraftian because the gods they worship only beckon to them as a means to an end, and the fact The Markers: Serve as tags to connect with unknowable gods. The substitution ciphers and psychological detriments wreak havoc on everyone. The False Hope of Unitology as a religious and scientific sect. The barbarism displayed by them, the desperation with the philosophical notions, and the desire to spread the world are hallmarks of Lovecraftian horror, aside from tentacled abominations. It is cosmic due to the fact that this is just one of a litany of other markers just roaming out there. What always amazed me was how well Dead Space handled cosmic horror when so many have failed. Dead Space answers the "why have we not found alien life yet" with the most frightening answer: something out in the darkness of the cosmos has turned a once vibrant galaxy into dead space. And it still lurks around where we can't see it. It's so fitting that one of the colonists points it out "the only planets we've ever found out in space were dead. Earth is a fluke." but the reality in Dead Space is not that life itself is a rare fluke, but the fact that they survived the superpredator that hunted down and consumed every single other species in the galaxy. That was Earth's fluke, and our lucky break. All that was left *was* Earth.

Agreed, though it should be pointed out that the Brethren Moons are the creators and destroyers of life. They essentially are the "Gods" of the universe, sending markers to worlds to create life. Once that species has exhumed it's resources and expanded beyond its capabilities, the Markers make itself known and entice the dying species with its promise of "unlimited energy". That energy is provided for a time until enough markers are made and thus the switch is made to complete convergence, birthing a new Brethren Moon. According to the book (Dead Space: Martyr) & Danik's statement in DS3, the black marker was sent to earth (whether by itself or encased in an asteroid) and impacted where the chicxulub crater is, killing the dinosaurs. It "forced" evolution to occur to make a sentient species, though Earths black marker was sent by the Tau Volantis moon in order to attract humans and release it. The question that remains unanswered is... Who created the first marker? Black Markers are created by Brethren Moons to start life and then end it when Red Markers are made, but who started the cycle? Was it an accident by some long deceased alien civilization? Or are they similar to D&D's aboleths.. being there from the beginning of the universe?

The first dead space game takes place in 2508, 500 years from the game's release. Consequentially so does the second game; in 2511, 500 years from its own release. However the game that broke the trend was also the game that nearly killed the series, Dead Space 3; taking place in 2514, but being released in 2013. This could have also foreshadowed DS3's rushed development since EA wanted the game to be released early and to include microtransactions, which Visceral didn't want to do from the beginning.

Everyone was being affected by the marker signal and as lore says only a few people were resistant or outright immune and they were primary target. Nicole was probably half insane by the end and could be that the marker made her suicide in order to create shock in the survivors. Although there is no evidence of that, it's cool to believe that the marker could sense Isaac incoming and his strong resistance. There's instead plenty of evidence of how the marker's MO is to break human will with it's horrors

The whole dormancy field thing seems to indicate something that might actually end up helping humanity in the fight against the Brethren. It seems to me that the process isn’t perfect; why would the markers force the infection into a dormant state whenever they get too close? To prevent the Necromorphs themselves from turning against the Marker and destroying it. It could also be that it’s a kind of trick to draw people closer to it, but I think that at some point during an infection, the Necromorphs rebelled against the brethren moons and destroyed the markers, delaying or completely stopping a previous infection on a distant planet in its tracks. Since then, the Markers have completely nullified any infected organism that got too close, even if it’s been completely enthralled. Just to be safe.

This is a really good theory and makes a lot of sense

I think it is because the soul of the maker is in the marker too. In the novel the marker was giving people visions trying to warn them about it, but while also the marker drove people mad. There are two warring forces in it.
@zaberfang3 жыл бұрын
I think the dormancy field is basically a trap cover. You won't see the trap coming until you're already too close to the marker. If you're thinking about the times a warning message the person sees upon contact, that's probably the person's inner psyche reacting to the signals emitted by the markers, realizing the danger, it gives the person a warning for the person to get away.
@sorapwn12003 жыл бұрын
Roanoke gaming actually did a video about this. The dormancy field around the markers actually lowers the white blood cell count in the body, making it to where infection by the corruption, or the viral bacteria that makes up the Necromorph infection, is much easier to do. It's a trap. Get close to the marker to protect yourself from the Necromorphs, make yourself that much more vulnerable whenever you finally step away.

Does anyone else think it would be awesome if we got like a live-action movie or Netflix show or something about the breakout of the infection on the Colony. Like it would follow with the story of the comics and the beginning of downfall and all that. Ive always wanted to see something like that come from the dead space franchise honestly

I think it would be cool. And the folks who complain about politics in media are making being a fan of anything hard these days. Politics in media was always there. Dead space's are pretty clear in it's themes and plot points. CEC, Earthgov, Unitology, it all reeking of corruption, greed, and religious fanaticism. Similar themes Alien had with Weyland-Yutani. I just went with a relevant example. A lot of art has politics in it. Tons of it. The author's biases show. Hell, starship troopers anyone? Heinlein's book is wildly different than the movie. But it's a shift in political beliefs of the creators. It is an incredibly political film and is still a scifi classic. I just shake my head at people my age saying this nonsense just because it's todays young people. folks online echo what everyone else says without thinking about it much. Rant over.

Thank you for this. I've been wanting to learn dead space lore at this level of depth for a long time. My only issue is the audio. Definitely make sure the volume intensity remains consistent throughout the whole video. Nobody likes to have to raise and lower the volume over and over especially for 2 hours... lol

Thank you for putting this together. It took me 11 years to buy "Dead Space." Started it twice, but chickened out. Left it on the shelf for 3 more years. Started again this past week and finally got sucked in. Just got past the horrid asteroid turret section last night. I'm so immersed in this world Visceral created, and this lore pastiche fills in all the details. Tremendous work, sir.

I remember my first foray into dead space with Extraction on the Wii, I was terrified and had trouble sleeping for days. My next birthday at 11 I begged my folks to buy Dead Space 1. They had no idea what it was about. I had to take breaks every save point because I was too scared to play through it for long. That’s why I will always come back when I want horror

This was really well made, the only issue I had was the audio mixing, most parts that were part of the games were too loud and your own voice too quiet. However everything else was excellent. Great job!

Nicely done. Would be perfect if you can solve the volume discrepancy between your voice and cutscenes. Your voice is simply too quiet, while story cutscenes go full throttle. Maybe get a better microphone. Your voice is nice to listen to, not boring but also not too overdramatic. But the microphone you used for this video kinda makes your voice hollow. But other than that, very nice and concise storytelling. I like how you connected events from different DS stories that happened at the same time (like when Lexine tried to warn the USG Kellion to stay away). Makes it easier to follow the story for dummies like me :)
@TheBritishRunner3 жыл бұрын
The problem comes down to a broken headset port not the microphone and due to my monotoned voice tones due to my depression I am trying to be better and clearer to you in future content. I am trying to make it the music and commentary to have a better balance hopefully you can hear me clearer in the sprawl timeline along with the music. Thank you for your observations they help me to understand your point of view and to make better content for the future.

That’s the most unsettling thing about nearly all installments in the Dead Space series. It’s so visceral that one can’t help but think they’re looking at the aftermath of a bloody battle during a major conflict. All of it lends credence to the idea that these things are killing machines in the ultimate sense; designed right down to the very fabric of their DNA to take life in all of its forms, in every way that is known and unknown. Eldritch horror, at its finest. No, not eldritch horror, eldritch _fear,_ eldritch _terror._

One of my favorite games that I come back to every year. So much lore that make the necromorphs so scary and not like iron man in big suit kills aliens! The comics, movies +the additional DLC in 2 and 3. I feel like I learn something new everytime I come back to this game, I remeber when Extraction came out the story was pretty weird since I think dead space wasn't released yet so it was like a game to hype it up but with all the pieces everything makes so much sense idk I just love this game so much. I'm so glad I got to randomly stumble upon this vid! ❤

Great video man, seriously. Very well done and well edited. In a sense, this shows that Visceral were INCREDIBLY dedicated to intertwining the stories to each other. Showing the Ishimura is a HUGE ship with so much stories that were told. Visceral...were like Marvel. This is Marvel levels of storytelling and how intertwined they are to each other. It just sucks that its done.
