@@NuisenceTV Me Personally, I think 4YEO is a perfect Hip Hop Record. Legitimately perfect from top to bottom; emotional; heartfelt; and a lot more nuanced and thematically dense than ppl tend to give it credit for. Plus the music on that album is simply beautiful. And BORN SINNER. it's not nearly as perfect, but I think it defined a type of J Cole music that we didn't get before and I don't think we'll ever get again from him. For me, at least, I think he did on that album what Kanye attempted to do with Yeezus. Born Sinner and Yeezus feel very similar to me. Both are about ego, and sadness, and fragility, and both use dynamic voluminous sounds to get that point across; I think Cole's experiment with that is just more aesthetically pleasing.

Tupac may not have the kind of verses that would make you say "rewind that son," but he had great bars. His lyrics are being taught in elite universities. For me, the criteria needed to be considered a goat is 1. Did you write your lyrics? and were those lyrics thought out? 2. Did you change the game in some way? "Damn, I want to rap like Rakim" 3. Did you have a cultural impact? "Harvard University offers courses using Tupac Shakur's Lyrics". 4. Do you have at least one classic album? 5. Did you have longevity? Longevity in the rap game meaning did you stay relevant for over five years? That is my personal criteria.

Tupac was very technical when he started. Go listen to songs like Something Wicked and Young Black Male off of 2pacalypse Now. He simply changed his style later on so that it could fit the way he delivers his message in his music. I'd also like to add that A LOT of those so called "technical rappers" are only technical on a surface level. When you really break down their lyrics, you'll see lots of gibberish. I'm talking about the Bone Thugs, Fushnikens, early Jay-Z etc.

People come at J Cole's neck because of his fans that overhype him. And it's not even most of his fans that do that just a very vocal minority. This guy makes good songs and while he's not the most lyrical person in the world he can still be very lyrical when the time calls for it he doesn't sacrifice his art for mainstream appeal he produces most of his own beats and Engineers them his self for the most part. plus he can make songs accessible and relatable without them being too dumbed-down down. Dude deserves more credit but he's always compared to Kendrick which has become a curse for him tbh. If he wasn't as famous critics would like him more.

Myke, it's not just Pac wasn't a 100% punchline lyricist, but he was mostly a poet - the other side of lyricism that largely doesn't get incorporated into GOAT lyricist criteria. Most Black people complain about there not being substance in Rap every decade. Yet when an emcee is poetic, that's not "hood" or "street-appealing" to them, they even mistake that for "lyrical miracle" - sounding White/crossover for Rap heads when that is never the case. That's why they make fun of their sells, not going Platinum, then turn around wondering why who's popular they bitch and complain about 24/7.

As far as the youth not going back, well one you can't expect every generation to know every artist to come before them, thats a ridiculous thing to expect. That would be like expecting the DEHH to know ever soul or R&B singer that was even remotely popular during their parents days. If anybody is to blame for the youth not knowing a Cool Keith it's the hip hop radio stations that have done a poor job of keeping goats from previous generation relevant besides a select few.

@AngelLozadaBlindNun7 жыл бұрын
There's certainly a difference between a good MC (rapper) and a good hip hop artist. The difference between a Big Daddy Kane vs a Fresh Prince.
@bonetiks7 жыл бұрын
1st- LYRICISM is not limited to "bars". The impact of what is being said rules out. Some of the greatest were able to accomplish this through technique while others such as Pac and DMX made you relate to the emotion. Rap has always been a form of POETRY put to music. In that sense we go with what's most profound. That could be a great tightly woven set of bars or a well put sentiment, etc. 2nd- MASS APPEAL is a major aspect of being the "GOAT". You cannot expect an underground rapper to be in the same contention as a Kendrick or Eminem if no one has heard them. Part of being the GOAT is breaking through that ceiling. If for what ever reason a rapper doesn't have that appeal that is the very "reason" that rapper is not a GOAT. 3rd- CONTENT has always been a prerequisite to being a GOAT, and that is not limited to political or social views. Nas, Biggie, Ice Cube, etc were all able to provide impactful content through storytelling; painting pictures of real life; urban decay; and success. Things you can learn from, live by, or be weary of. 4th- LONGEVITY is a measure of greatness! After all of these years Jay-Z can still impact the face of Hip Hop. Eminem can stop the world with a freestyle. Not because of unrivaled talent, but because of the respect they have earned by being great for such a long time. 5th- LEGACY.. A GOAT will certainly leave it's mark! When you invite the nerd to the cool table things will change, even if only aesthetically. Drake's run has been the greatest rap has ever seen, and not because of any one thing. He has proven that landscapes can change as a direct response to his output. DEHH this list can serve as criterion for the next time you decide to waste people's time.

I think it's possible to clarify with an analogy; McDonalds doesn't have the best burgers on the market, but they do have the most popular. If we can understand that concept and apply it to music, then the GOAT conversation doesn't have to be about sales. Will Smith sold more albums than a lot of artists, but people don't put him in their GOAT list. People use the sales argument when it helps support their opinion.

My top 10: 1. Tupac (Almost every album is a classic, lyrical genius when he made Makaveli, the most legendary rapper of all time, he destroyed Biggie) 2. Biggie (2 classics, best/coldest flow ever, he had those m'fucking skills, etc.) 3. Nas (Best lyricist of all time, he made the greatest album of all time with age 17-19, he destroyed Jay Z) 4. Rakim (Lyrical genius, 2 classics, he completely changed Hip Hop) 5. Eminem (3 classics, crazy flow, technical god, crazy lyrics and wordplay) 6. Big L (2 classics, punchline king, freestyle king, flow monster) 7. Andre 3000 (Lyrical genius, flow genius, 3 classics) 8. MF DOOM (2 classics, LYRICAL MASTERMIND, the villain of Hip Hop) 9. Lupe Fiasco (Second best lyricist, a genius at everything) 10. Kendrick Lamar/Mos Def (Kendrick: Great lyricist, crazy flow, 3 classics) (Mos Def: GENIUS!)

Mike using semantics again. Rapper. Rap artist. What’s the difference.
Ppl have to learn how to keep score based on how the game is today. It's like old heads be wanting to give the new generation two points for a three point shot just because they didn't have it during their time. All these convos are bias. Older ppl that even consider Kdot a goat do so because he's the closest thing to what used to be praised that actually gets main stream love. The problem is ppl use "criteria" to disqualify instead of rank and many have a hard time considering someone outside of the "golden era" a goat if they aren't reminiscent of that time.

Having rappers that cant rap well in the list for greatest RAPPERS of all time is so crazy to me. You don't put basketball players that don't play basketball well in the greatest of all time list. You don't put the most popular players in that list. You have to have skill. But they should also have a great run, the numbers relative to their time, and accolades to back up your GOAT list argument.

Myke, with all due respect. You have to stop assuming that there is not a group of people who are able to constructively be able to think beyond the mainstrem: You do. So are you saying that your group of friends are the only objective thinkers? You can be seen as bias also, right? I personally think that Ka, Skyzoo, Canibus, and Lupe should absolutely be in the conversation for best lyricist ever. I have logic behind it. I think it'd disturbing that Black Thought is not in most people's top 5, and Tupac shouldn't even be considered. This idea that his content places him in that category is absurd. If that's the case then he shouldn't be anywhere near Nas who has rapped about everything, from a million different point of views. He is technically better than Pac, had as much or more depth, but people consistently use his mythology to elevate his status. It's a joke.

@MrAllenIverson7 жыл бұрын
To me the goat conservation you would have to take a look a basketball. Not saying shaq is the greatest rapper of all time cause he is also a nba player but the goat convo was created by fans of the nba. And the nba is a place where you can be great in all different kinds of categories like all time points, points in a game, influence, impact, assists, efficiency and more. But your not the goat.. they play key roles in making people think you atleast a runner up for it but it doesn't tell you if you are. Like for hip hop it's flow, bars, albums, influence, impact, how many sold, how many platinum, or any category you can think of to prove someone from being better then others. What it all boils down to for your goat is what you value or what your values are. Basically what makes a goat is the over all general opinion on who is. Whoever has the most people is basically the goat. You can even argue that jordan isn't the goat of basketball. He doesn't have the most rings, he lost in the first round a couple times, his team you can argue was over over powered for its time, he doesn't have the most points scored in a game/season/career, and many more. But he is the goat due to popular opinion and has remained the goat longer then other nba players because he has his own popular brand. You see jordan commercials, shoes, hornets jerseys have a jumpman logo on it now.. the belief has just been passed on cause of marketing. To figure out who is the goat of hip hop you need a generalized opinion for the majority of the community. Yes today and yesterday's hip hop fans. And the one with the most is technically the goat. Even if another rapper is better all around it doesn't matter cause its just a belief. And for people that may say well how can you compare hip hop and basketball this is for you. Hip hop and basketball have the same culture thanks mainly to allen iverson. They have the same impact. You see your favorite player wearing something you might go cop it. You hear like lil pump say gucci gang your probably gonna want to get some gucci. And it applies to not just gucci but anything. Even like screaming fuck the police when you have no problems with the law but just because nwa said it and you like them. Then the categories like number 1 hits is kinda the same equivalent as a mvp or championship besides hits come more often the championships. Flow and bars are equivalent to how you play basketball which is very important unless your not really a big fan or don't care. Like how you actually got the game winning shot. Whether it be a hard 3 over a defender like kobe or just your team mate finding you the open for a easy layup and yea enough said. And how it relates to hip hop is someone with a nice flow and the bars you like and the easy layup part is comparable to someone who actually had a ghost writer/ just jumps on a beat with no flow or bars/and lastly but not least what people call mumble rap. I also count screens in basketball for a points scored by pick & rolls and pick & pops kinda like just being in a remix. It's more of a team thing not individual. Like bars and flows can be compared to how good while making a play how good they set the screen or shot the ball. There are many different ways to compare hip hop to basketball.
@tpsam6 жыл бұрын
Mr AllenIverson don't see analytics working with hip hop. Do you get it? Something on basketball is objectively quantified. Moreover hip hop is really appreciated by few. You have way more people educated about nba and basketball. How many people have heard all the classics of hip-hop? I mean all of them! You can't really judge without knowing all the classics first. You shouldn't be entitled if you aren't educated enough on the matter.
