the first letters of Sometimes I Might Be Introvert make SIMBI, Simz’s name. the album is a massive statement of identity and it makes you proud to be Nigerian, Black, British, Female or even just an Introvert when listening to it. few albums make you feel that way. this album will be a classic in Hip-Hop and because of its themes of reflection, introversion and social unrest I think many of us will look back on it as The COVID album
@MiyamotoMusakaki Жыл бұрын
No one should be proud to be british
@marxistlynchist Жыл бұрын
@@MiyamotoMusakaki i get what you're saying. modern british identity is complicated because it is so diverse multicultural, but equally that broad spectrum exists because so many people have been oppressed . in terms of solidarity with working class people there is a lot of pride there for a lot of people for sure, and Simz's album reflects that- especially when speaking on her specific experience as a black working class women. but there's also a lot of resentment cuz the system here has caused so much pain for us, especially afro and desi people who are still impacted by the legacy of colonialism. so there is a fine line between pride for our communities and nationalism that holds up our shitty classist institutions. but I think the album tackles that divide well since it is about her experiences growing up in mutlicultural London- and she uses the voiceover of Princess Diana's actor in The Crown. that's really emblematic of complex british identity since she is loved as a public figure for how she called out and broke down how monarchy were expected to act, but also held up one of history's grossest and most colonial symbols since she did marry into that family. so yeah, I understand what you mean but its also not that simple.

This album kinda reminded me of Kendrick's TPAB in how cohesive and self-reflective it is, at the same time turning outward with lots of attention for black/female representation. Career-defining record. Also the Lucy nod on Two Worlds Apart may have triggered this comparison too
