According to the CDC, the average weight for a man who is 5'9" in the U.S. is 197.9 pounds. 5'11 is still tall but 180 is no longer heavy. Viking great axes (aka Dane axes) are NOT wood axes. They are specialized weapons of war with long edges & they thin cross sections. They handle less like a sledge hammer & closer to a longsword or katana. This show was always entertaining, but the judges rarely knew what they were talking about. They called the naginata strike the fastest weapon they've ever seen and still give the win to the longsword. When they judged the bow, they didn't even factor in range as the samurai was shooting at nearly twice the distance. They also defended the spear by saying the chainmail deflected the katana. Anyone who knows anything about armor knows that chainmail was designed for cutting weapons and kinda sucked vs arrows which would split between the chain links.

Could say about equal depending on the situation, terrain and armaments. I'd say the typical tactic of Vikings was closer to what we call guerrilla tactics, using the element of surprise, attacking disorganized groups. As most of them were not warriors/fighters as profession, it was secondary. Their boats allowed them to sail rivers and streams that others couldn't or didn't expect it would be possible. There has been a good amount of large scale battles, but that's also when they've lost the most and had the highest casualties. I suspect it is because most were not fighters as profession, lack of complex formations and cohesiveness. You could use some outliers like William the Conqueror from Normandy, of Viking ancestry, whom ironically helped the British retake their land, but seemed to have understood large scale(somewhat large ca 8k-10k soldiers) mobilization.

The spears that the Vikings were throwing weren't throwing spears (aka javelins) they were winged spears which are a type of mele weapon. Can you throw a winged spear absolutely and they showed they could at short distances. But a javelin can be thrown much further as it is lighter, shorter & with a smaller head will penetrate more easily with less force.

The problem with this was that it pitted 11th century Viking Armor and weapons against 14th century Samurai. The Normans would have been the Samurai equivalent in the 14th century and beat all in a one on one match.

Oh, and the main weapons of the Samurai was a Tanegashima... a rifle. Yeah, they had guns... next would be the war bow , a Yumi.

You're assuming the samurai came from that time period when an ashigaru would be issued a tenpo

LOL they didn't specify... they only supposedly selected the best and most dangerous weapons of each warrior... So why not select the hand canon... lol...

had a lot of fun with this, thanks for posting. the Vikings were actually the tallest people on earth at the time most likely, northern European people are still the tallest on earth by average. he's only 5 11" because people were shorter back then, the average Japanese man is way above 5 3" now days as well.

It's like they didn't know that Vikings hunted and used bows their entire lives, smdh. not a fan of how they portray the Vikings to be big, dumb, people. they were literally the most tactical warriors on earth, that's why they were so successful, and no one "defeated" the Vikings. once you fought, conquered, and got what you wanted (farmland, trade routes, and such) there's no reason to keep fighting and waring because they only did that out of necessity. if you wanna see historically accurate Vikings go watch the movie, The Northmen. Vikings focused on group combat and fighting as a team, not this 1v1 shit. they had archers, spearmen, and warriors with swords/axes and shields. they wouldn't have hidden behind their shield, they would have used it to block while counter attacking. gods I can't stand shit when they aren't accurate to the history of things. im sure Metatron would have a hay day with this episode of the show lol.

The suppsed viking "expert"had horrible edge alignment with the sverð (sword) with his first cut on the gel torso. Still a decent cut but would have been much better if he had proper edge alignment.

The end battles on deadliest Warrior have some of the dumbest s $hit in them ever! Like in the Ninja episode where the ninja is running on a trail and does a Ford flip over a log in the way rather than just hopping over it 😂 This episode they make the Viking act like an idiot just running out in the open with two Spears after somebody just shot at him with a bow, and later this samurai falls off a bridge onto his back and isn't hurt I'm sorry even an armored you'd be hurt.

When the Vikings were leading their attacks on England, England opted to bring in Barbarians to 'take care' of the problem. The Germanic tribes Anglo and Saxons were the answer. This is where Saxon England got its name.. the more ya know. Side note: The Vikings were also a Germaic tribe. Modern-day Scandinavia, back then, was part of Germania.

5'11" and 180 pounds was huge for the era. We didn't start to see people as big as we do now until modern day nutrition and the calorie intake of the 20th century. One exception were people that still lived in smaller hunter gatherer communities with ample access to food. Cultivating crops led to being able to produce enough calories to have larger civilizations, but our nutrition suffered because we didn't have the diverse sources of nutrients.

These duels do not make sense, military units were varied and with specific tasks and different roles in tactics, whether archers, horsemen, navigators, spearmen, etc., therefore this is incomplete

Hey Stephen, love the show, I’m not much of a fighter or get into fight stuff, but I came across you a couple years ago and enjoy your channel. So there are a few things about Deadliest warrior (especially this episode). So they test the katana against the axe. But they also have a Viking sort. Now, yes, it was more common for the average Viking to have an ax over a sword, your testing apples, and oranges. This is even with the winning. Also, you mentioned the flex in the Viking sword test, flexible swords are great swords. you want them to have that flex and spring back. Katanas were folded because a lot of Japanese steel was not high-grade. Another thing I found strange was the fact that they didn’t test the spear against the Nagata to me. That makes zero sense to put it against the bow. Vikings used bow and arrow. I will definitely argue that the Japanese would still win bow versus bow. A lot of the weapon classifications are strange. The ax should be against the Kanabo The shield was also extremely under represented. I know the shows were fun, I just feel like this one, especially was just really off.
