bit of a fun deal about the show. I know some systema artists who got on the show representing spetznas in one episode. according to them, the producers picked the weapons, not experts which was odd as the weapons they got, Spetsnaz never used. the other thing to note was that the secret program that used to calculate who would win in the fight was Microsoft Office.

I like to think of the movie 300 as what the ancient greeks would make if they had to describe the battle of thermopylae. Remember they depicted soldiers going into battle naked or riding on dolphins.
@arcaneursa90228 жыл бұрын
+GenericFakeName The naked part of the story is actually true. They wouldnt go into battle naked tho. Before the battle would start greek soldiers would take off clothes and armor to intimitade enemies and prepare their bodies. They would make each others hair(HA GAYY) and some times cover parts of thei bodies with incense and olive oil to make it harder to get grapled by an oponnent. People always think that ancient and medieval battles between armies would start like wildfire everyone rushing and bashing which is wrong. There would have been set of times that would be discussed between generals via messengers. Example fighting starts at crack of dawn and ends 3 hours before dusk and then they would commence.

15:02 I would like to add that at the end when you demonstrate how a viking shield really would have been held that the arm would not have been strapped at all. I know that you would know this, but I just wanted to clarify that for those who may not have. If anyone is more curious I highly recommend you search Roland Warzecha here on youtube and watch his videos on how a viking shield most likely was used.
@freeman35423gs8 жыл бұрын
Hey, I enjoy a lot your videos, it's so cool that you share real historical facts during your overviews. Concerning horns on viking's helmets I've heard this explanation: It's definitely not true that warriors wear helmets with horns, because from the functional point of view it makes the bearer of horns the easier target to hit, than having plain sleek helmet. The horns appeared in performance of "Song of Nibelungs" , one of the characters wore the horned helmet. It was brand new thing and audince enjoyed it a lot. I guess after it artists also helped to widespread this particular ferocious vision of vikings.
@tasatort97789 жыл бұрын
I'm glad that you take things from a truly historical viewpoint and that you actually know your history. I understand that video games are going to be inaccurate because the designers are going to be more interested in how something looks rather than how historically accurate it is; so I make allowances (I have seen some truly horrendous and impractical arms and armors in games). I'm not saying that I didn't enjoy this video, because I did very much and I encourage you to keep going. I take it that the main point of this video is "Do not believe everything you see in a video game is historically accurate." I believe (this is simply an assumption, and not based on any experience in game programing) that the reason behind having the Roman Scutum being roughly the same size as the Hoplite Aspis is that its easier to have the physics of shields to be the same and just change the graphics to suit the character class.

Yeah, there's DLC for the main game that includes three additional warriors: Rajput Warrior, Shaolin Monk, and Azande Warrior. There's also a sequel called Deadliest Warrior: Legends, and this one has the Hero historical characters that have appeared on the show: William Wallace, Hannibal, Attila, Genghis Khan, Alexander The Great, Shaka Zulu, Sun Tzu, and Vlad Tepes. I think GameStop actually has a Collector's Edition version which includes both games, as well as all the DLC for both games as well. Just a little heads-up for you, Metatron.
@OrkarIsberEstar9 жыл бұрын
as someone quite experienced with vikings - yes they did find horned helmets and depictions of horned helmets but those were used in religious ritual NOT in combat. Cow horns indicate fertility rites (in special associated with the worship of Thors mother to make the land fertile) Deer Antlers (to ensure a good hunt and pray to Ullr) and sometimes goat horns for human fertility. however these were worn by priests during ceremony not by warriors in combat - that would be total rubbish for many reasons Also the viking shield wasnt strappped at all you hold it with your fist only - that allows for maaaany nice maneuvers. they MAY have had shoulder straps for wearing it on your back but usually its just held by the fist
@Glimmlampe19829 жыл бұрын
@ the roman shield: i'm not sure, but wheren't there some changes in the size of the scutum over the time? i think i remember that the later ones where smaller... (but that 'knowlage' might come from rome: total war or history channel... so ... yeah.. uh ;) )
@Axon4000Gaming9 жыл бұрын
I think they may have made the Scutum too small for balancing reasons. If you look closely, almost all of the shields are of the same or similar size (height-wise) and are all going from the knees to just below the shoulder. Just an idea, but I still prefer accuracy over inaccuracy in almost any situation.

Just wondering about another game, "The witcher 3" I know that the combat isn't realistic for obvious reasons, but what about the armours. They seem to protect very little, especially the witcher gear. (search "Wolf armour set") but the thickness of the meterial made me wonder if it were possible that mail might be sown into the jackets, whether it be historically accurate and was is done to keep warm for example, or appear concealed, and if not; would be possible.

a question Metatron. Looking at roman armor i have to say that it looks more protective and advanced than the armor worn in the 900-1100. Romans already had articulated plates and mail underneath, while over 1000 years later they mostly wear only mail w/surcoat and cone nasal helmets. Even the coats of plates worn further down the line seem inferior in protection compared to a lorica segmentata. My question is why did articulated plates didn't continue their evolution since roman times? why did 900's warriors used only mail even though there was the precedent of plate armour in a culture from centuries ago? (hell, even earlier greek breastplate designs would've been a good idea over the mail)
@7dayspking9 жыл бұрын
+melchaios You forgot the part where a GAMBESON was worn underneath the mail.......the reason for mail + gambeson over plate is because it was easier to equip a large group of men with Mail + Gambeson...and in many ways it was FAR more protective (especially the Gambeson!)

The horns on viking helmets was a complete myth on the battlefield.Not even the jarls or kings whore horns. It was for ceremonies and the gods whore horns.Horns are not really practical.The only practical thing about horns was that it would scare the enemy but vikings was scary enough without the horns because they are bigger than the people they raided in England.

A couple of things to say o fine sir, first thing whilst your round shield isn't the most authentic thing in the world, are you sure it's not a 'Targe' shield? as they are double arm strapped, also with a boss it appears sorta like some of the later century targes I've seen online. In addition, the ninjas portrayal is awful. but I must ask, does the Ninja only have shuriken as a ranged weapon? as there are written accounts of them using arqubuses, like the one who attempted to assassinate Oda Nobunaga by shooting him twice (Needless to say, it did not take.)

Perhaps the reason for the movie 300 to portray Spartans going to war naked was to replicate what we see on ancient vases. The Greeks seemed to like portraying their soldiers naked, so why can't 300?

@Metatron . 11:16 ''some of them might perhaps did'' vikings NEVER had horns on there helmets. that's bull s**t the Christians who got raided claimed. cause they thought the vikings was the devils servants. There has been no viking aged helmets whit ether horns on or had fittings for horns found any where in the world where vikings went. The only few horned helmets ever found was ceremonial helmets. (yes i know you said that) and that's where the horned helmets begin and end. one of the reason why they didn't have horns is that it would had been a extremely piss poor choice for a helmet. since a blade might catch the horn and brake the warriors neck whit ease. shore it locks cool in movies and pictures but are completely useless in battles. www.ancient-origins.net/artifacts-other-artifacts/exposing-roots-viking-horned-helmet-myth-005292

Well for the Spartan bronze cuirass the straps are wrong for the time period depicted .. IE circa 450 bc.. periklisdeligiannis.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/metropolitan-museum-of-art.jpg It would have had smaller leather straps holding the armor together tighter than depicted. But for a video game not bad . As to the ninja well there were straight swords in the time period but there is no evidence to suggest that Ninja or Shinobi used a specific sword. The only known historical straight sword in japan that we have actual evidence of is the Chokutō which may have been the inspiration for the ninjatō which has no historical precedent and is likely a modern invention. So yeah good video.

Metatron the ninja used the ninjato and the katana

+Ahsan Ali Ninjas used everything they could have in their hands, so I am not saying a straight samurai sword didn't exist, maybe it did (I am not aware of any historical example though) but even if it did exist it wouldn't be a ninjato because ninjato literaly means ninja's katana, to is the same character for Katana, so a ninja to and a katana used by a ninja are exactly the same thing.
