@alexanderflack5665 жыл бұрын
Well, to be fair (although I'm not entirely convinced fairness is warranted, at least not to whoever wrote the script), they were used in both the 1200s and 1300s. Also after that, and almost certainly before depending on how strict your definition is (Six foot yew selfbow with 100#+ draw? The Norse had those centuries before the English used them to achieve their fame.).

@Nicolas Broszky "this is the second millenium we're in right now" NO IT'S NOT =D We have had two millenia already, the second one ended when 2001 started. You are seriously misunderstanding the order form of numbers here. Yes, your first birthday is when you turn 1 years old, but only because "birthday" means the _anniversary_ of the day you were born! That doesn't mean you just started your first year of life, you have already lived it! And your _second_ year of life started and ends when you turn 2 years old on your second birthday. Years 0-100 are the first century precisely because they are the first 100 years to pass. Century number one would be years 101-200, or the second century because they are the second 100 years to pass. Years 0-100 can in actuality also be called the century zero, as in century number zero, because zero is not a number of order. Now I'm not sure where you're from, but in my language we don't use the form "19th century" etc. at all, instead we say the equivalent of "the eighteen-hundreds", and this does result in some confusion among our people when studying English. Confusion that really really sounds exactly like what you've been writing through all of this conversation, so I just thought maybe you have a similar deal going on.
@tommyfred61805 жыл бұрын
@Nicolas Broszky in no country would the 13th century be considered to be 1300 to 1399. 13th century is 1200 to 1299 full stop. this is an international standard that has no flexibility in its definition mate. sorry but you are simply wrong. but your mistake is a very common one and a lot of people get a bit confused over the way century's are dated.

Exactly, crossbows have ridiculously high poundage because of their small draw size. It should be around 350 at the very least but there are some that are 1000 or higher and were drawn with levers or cranks.
@colinp22388 жыл бұрын
History has proven that the longbow was superior to the crossbow. The archers would send volleys of arrows that rained down on enemy lines creating havoc. It has been written in ancient texts that arrows darkened the sky, this is because of the numbers fired in vollies.
@davidbodor17628 жыл бұрын
colinp2238 It's situational though. Longbows are really good at long range but for close to medium range you'd need a crossbow. They are also fairly decent against armor due to the heavy draw weights that can be achieved by using cranks or levers.

This old dude doesn't realise that English longbowmen were trained from childhood to learn how to use the bow well and were among the most muscular men in the army, he has niether of these assets. The crossbow was brought in soley because any peasant could learn to use it in an hour regardless of their fitness. The longbow was clearly superior but required a lot of time and devoted training.
@davidmcginness67188 жыл бұрын
sexi man 'You can fire a crossbow for far longer with little effort' I already addressed this, it was easier so it was favoured in medieval times. 'Fire heavier bolts' longbows don't use bolts, they use arrows so apples and oranges. What do you mean 'power'? That's really really incorrect. crossbows are consistent in their power, I'll give you that. Whether a trained archer or a peasant uses it the power will be the same but with a bowmen there are variables. The training and physic of the archer for example. You didn't even mention the fact that longbows send arrows much farther than crossbows send bolts. So as I already said in my last comment, if a proper trained archer is using a longbow, it will outmatch a crossbow.
@davidmcginness67188 жыл бұрын
sexi man Really? You're going to bring up speed here? Well okay then I'll say crowsbows take ages to load whereas a bow can be loaded and fired within seconds. What do you mean 'long periods of time'? A guy can fire a bow for hours if he's fit. What you're saying depends on the bowman but the bow itself has the ability to fire forever so your argument is invalid. You ARE incorrect, My point was it depends on who uses the longbow whereas a crossbow from medieval times will always perform worse regardless of who uses it You're argument is frankly ridiculous when you say English Longbows 'shoot further than some crossbows'. I am talking about a specific bow, the the English Longbow and I was saying that it was replaced by the crossbow in medieval times because it was easier to learn how to use it. You can't compare a specific bow from a specific time to ANY crossbow from then to now. Ir was brought in for conveniance, doesn't mean that in the centuries since then they made a crossbow better than a medieval bow. Yeah I did make you specify arrows because I know I am correct in what I said regardless of your inflated ego that needs to contradict everyone else You're arguing with the wrong person. You're trying to argue abour crossbows and bows GENERALLY. I am talking about why many medieval European countries replaced bows.
@InquisitorShepard8 жыл бұрын
your logic is disconcerting. so the hardest it is to do something the better it is? if it's way easier to use a crossbow than a bow it makes it a more efficient weapon for most people, since they won't need a life training to be able to kill someone with it.

I don't understand the second part of your comment...
@chrisedwards38666 жыл бұрын
Michael Jarrett, riiiiiight. Because protection gear is made with the assumption that everyone does everything perfectly. It's not made to handle the case where someone messes up. And as we all know, once someone gains basic competence in a skill, they never make a mistake again. (/sarcasm) Protective gear is made to protect against injuries when things go wrong. Most activities will not involve injuries if everything is done right. You might as well say you ride a bike without a helmet because you don't crash. That may be true, until something unexpected happens and you crash. And guess what, people do get distracted and make mistakes - that's why protective gear exists, why race cars have roll cages, and why your keyboard has a backspace key. If you want to claim you don't make mistakes: You've been writing and typing for far longer than you have practiced archery, and you missed a lot of punctuation. If your own words are an indicator, then you are an error-prone archer as well.

Trouble was there were far more archers than there were SKILLED archers. You couldn't feasibly build an entire military unit of SKILLED archers. Those that WERE skilled absolutely COULD precisely snipe people with them (of course not at the great distances and scoped precision of a modern sniper rifle, but that's like comparing a cherry bomb to a nuclear missile)...you just couldn't get your hands on HUNDREDS of skilled archers to all snipe down the infantry. The downfall of the bow is the immense skill required to use it to its full potential...but AT its full potential it can compare to, and even beat out certain modern pistols.

I have always seen Sandalphon as the "Scribe of God" and Metatron as the "Messenger of God". The reason I called them the "Angels of the Pressence" is that, as well as I can remember, those two are always in attendance at the throne. As far as Satan/Lucifer goes; an argument can be made that Satan is more of a generic title rather than a proper name; much like prosecutor in legal circles. The variable natures seen in the various sources can, I believe, be due to a difference in the time and location for each individual source. Each reflecting the custom/tradition of the time and location the writer is from; much like the contradictions seen within other religions when moving from one geographical area to another.

+carl jansen You mean the Battle of Agincourt as it was the main conflict between longbows vs knights. Some 2,000 Mounted French Knights as well as 6,000 Men-at-Arms with re-enforcments vs 300 Longbowmen and about 2,000 Dismounted English Knights. The English were outnumbered 5-1 by a superior French Army. But Longbows combined with lethal Bodkin arrows tore into the French army as they charged towards the English line and won the battle. There are some further details as to why the French lost, the poor ground, the English advantage of terrain. However, I cant be bothered to go into all that as it would take me hours to write up the whole thing in fine detail. Just, the French got their ass kicked. (Fun fact The 100 Years War didn't actually last 100 years. It actually went on for 116 years)
@Matteo-mf1tj9 жыл бұрын
+carl jansen It´s true that the medieval sources arent so accurate, but what we know is that the longbow won the battle of Agincourt (but also Crecy, Poiters,...). Thats not only because of the strength of the bows, but because of the number of the bowmens and there skills and physical efficiency. All bowmens were professional soldiers, which have trained every day from they childhood with the bow, another point for the longbow is the body of professional bowmens, to tense a bow you have to be physically strong, especially the arms and shoulders were very bonded. The frequence of fire was also impressing, skilled bowmens were able to fire 6 arrows per second, but soldiers with a crossbow only one. The number of of bowmens was one of the biggest advances, take the battle of Agincourt, there have been about 8000-10000 bowmens (this fact is based on founds on the battleground) All together we can say that the bow is more effiectiv on the battleground, than the crossbow, if you use it like the english have done it.
@tsgillespiejr9 жыл бұрын
Matteo S. Six arrows per second is highly dubious. As near as I recall, the average for a skilled bowman was three (?). All of the things you mentioned about bowmens' high level of conditioning is basically true, but one could make the argument that that factor places the longbow at an actual *disadvantage* to the crossbow (which can be drawn and held at draw with minimal effort). I think what most distinguished the longbow was its greater range (?). I would assume an arrow fired from a longbow can cover a greater distance in less time than a horse carrying an armored man. And horses are fairly large targets. After being stuck fairly full of arrows, I wouldn't imagine a galloping horse would be galloping for long. Forget about armor piercing and killing charging knights with longbows. The longbow, in my estimation, was an anti-horse weapon. (?) Means somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, by the way.

Loved the video. As a master archer and a lot of research I have done with the archeological institutes available to me here in Austria and on my visits to the UK here are some facts (or commonly agreed upon things by those archeologists): The usual british longbow had a draw of 120-140lbs which seems extreme and it was, most archers found in digs are easily identifyable even without their bows as they have deformed shoulders and are rarely over 25 years old. This harsh draw was necessary as mostly longbows that were not made for hunting in battle were used as artillery. They were shot at an angle into the air to cover good distance resulting however that power and energy were already dminished when hitting the targets. It was a pure factor of overwhelming number of arrows shot and the typical archer sucked big time at close range shots as aiming was not their game. Then there were of course hunting longbows and specialist longbows (today you would prolly say sharpshooter, which is not really true as they would have to get in close). The typical distance to hunt or "sharpshoot" an enemy however was about 15 to 20m TOPS. As especially the arrows could not be tuned like today. The draw of the bows was about 70-80lbs (still a lot, try one hehe) as those made it possible to actually aim (for a split second). As you said even there it is not really proven that arrows could penetrate armor, especially thick breastplates, it is thought that typically the archer was a supporter trying to find an opening in the armor and wound the enemy or slow them down for their hack and slash supporters :) (at least this is one theory) However these arrows with good heads could typically penetrate weaker armor spots and they were effective against many types of chainmail. The longbow (unlike shown in Robin Hood) was actually a pretty inacurate weapon, most of its accuracy came due to the length of the bow, giving it some stability. However the most important thing about a bow are the arrows and British arrows sucked big time. Most were cut wrong, too thick and the fletching was done in a hurry. Compare those to arrows found in Mongolian society and you wonder how they shot anything. In Mongolian society actually the fletchers were experts and people of high status, as they made arrows that were able to withstand the huge power of the riding bow. Even though the riding bows were usually only 40-60lbs in draw weight, due to the recurve design being able to store more energy, their performance was much better leading up to speed in excess of 200ft/s. With arrowheads able to overcome chain and splinter wooden armor they were perfect target weapons with great precision. Only downside their shortness (made necessary as often they were shot mounted) so they became more instable. There would be a lot more, however I am tired of writing hehe, hope you found that interesting.

English WAR (there also was a hunting version) longbow could be up to 160 lb draw weight and there was a law in England saying that every peasant and low ranking citizen must own a longbow and train shooting with it once in a week. For using a longbow properly, you had to train with it for many years, and not just picking it up shooting with it in a bad form like that guy. And for crossbows: that "expert" saying: " You can get them up to a hundred, hundred and twenty pounds." Medieval war crossbows were 4-5 times stronger than that!!!

If I remember correctly, 200 pounds was the heaviest for crossbows that were drawn manually, but the winch designs could get somewhere into the ballpark of 400 pounds (don't quite remember how far up they went from there). What is to note though is that the English Longbow was still one of the most powerful ranged weapons. To match a 160 pound longbow, a crossbow with half as much draw distance would need 320 pounds to match, as force is acceleration times distance. A crossbow however needed much less training to be used effectively so it became a much more common weapon in warfare.
@yoco93cro8 жыл бұрын
no, they were much more powerful. This is what I found on the internet: "The goat's foot crossbows having a draw weight of around 450 pounds, the cranequin around 750 pounds and some heavy siege crossbows 1200 / 1500 pounds. " "The use of these advanced spanning mechanisms made the crossbow a powerful but slow weapon. Payne-Gallwey decribes shooting a 15th century Siege bow of 3 foot 2 inches length, with a bolt 3 ounces in weight and 14 inches in length, a distance of 460 yards. At 60 yards he sent a bolt right through a deal plank 3/4 in. thick. The total weight required to draw the string of its bow 7 inches using its portable windlass was 1,200 pounds, or over half a ton."
@SethAbercromby8 жыл бұрын
yoco93cro Hm, must have had a bend in my memory lane. Still, while not quite in the ballpark where I had put it in my post, those 160 pounds still turn out a good deal more powerful than you would think in a direct comparison with crossbows. The draw distance is pretty short, the longest I could find on modern crossbows appears to be 8 inches (and historical data is surprisingly hard to come by on a quick search, but even recurve crossbows don't seem to have been that much longer, so we're likely talking 10 to 12 inches at most to allow for comfortable and accurate shooting). In comparison, the English Longbow is build for a 30 inch draw distance. That is to say an 8 inch crossbow needs at least 600 pounds of draw weight to match a 160 pound longbow and 480 or 400 for 10 and 12 inches respectively, but as I said, with the crossbow being that much more practical, it provided a much more efficient tool to train soldiers with, even while still less powerful at the time of its inception. Density does trump firepower when the higher firepower is not an almost guaranteed penetration. I should have added that the statement for the longbow was of course applied relevant to its age, not the significantly more powerful crossbow designs that followed a century after.

You have to understand who this is made for metatron, its not made for historians its made for the fans of R. Lee Ermy of which I am one and although there are some things that might not be represented perfectly, there was very little if any flat out false information being presented as fact. I think the point is more to show some carnage to those of us who enjoy it and it gets a general point across (pun intended) that these weapons can inflict serious damage. As far as entertainment value its gold. Im not sure you (beening a European) can fully appreciate R. Lee Ermy and thats ok. I appreciate your original content and even some of your critics of others content but there is very little value in pointing out the ridiculous antics of this video as there in lies its charm. P.S. still love you metatron keep up the good work

History Channel in general is a lot more about entertainment than facts. They seem to be more interested in distracting a population with decreasingly large attention span than actually teaching people history. They just don't care. As long as the guy from Full Metal Jacket is smashing watermelons, it's fun enough to watch. Now let's go back to commercials. Mind you, the average American person doesn't even know what period the Middle Ages covered. They know there were knights and bowmen because they have played computer games with these characters, but that's about it.

No way in hell this bow is half draw weight of the English longbow. English longbow was at least 150lb. That means half of is 75lb, which would never be drawn that easily with only 2 fingers without tab or glove. Besides they said the crossbow was 62lb of draw weight (which is very light for crossbows with that short draw lengh, which also reduces significantly the power of the bolt) and it penetrated better than the "longbow". That means the bow was probably 20 to 30 lb max. 75lb bow would kill this poor watermelon knight
