9:36 I think that the reason why this scene was silent was because this was an early horror movie. At the time of this release, Alfred Hitchcock was probably one of the few well-known directors who made horror/thriller movies. The average moviegoer wasn't used to seeing the image of a bloody corpse with it's eyes pecked out lying on the floor, and the shock was probably intense enough for most people. They didn't actually need scary sound effects of dramatic music to scare people with this kill.

It’s awesome. Yes, it’s dated in ways (it’s nearly 60 years old though so that can’t really be held against it), but at its core it’s still a great movie with a unique plot and well-written characters. I saw it for the first time around 2009 when I was in high school, and I was still impressed by how well it held up. I’m actually kinda surprised it was allowed to be shown in school considering the scene of the man with his eyes pecked out. It’s pretty graphic.

I think you should give Tippi Hedren’s character arc a second chance. I understand what you’re saying about how the story took a strong willed woman and made her weak and frail. But put it in the context of the birds in the novel, which were really an allegory for the war planes that were flying overhead. What her character arc is showing is really the ravages of war. How war can beat down even the strongest person sometimes.

@thingthang2904
@thingthang2904 3 жыл бұрын
For me personally, it's the trope of the man taking over that bothers me. It takes away from the focus of her being worn down because the stakes around her don't change along with her (because when she gets weak, the man takes over so she remains protected even if she can't protect herself). It would've been far more impactful, in my opinion, if the birds killed Mitch and she left with the other two Brenners, a shell of the character she was in the beginning. With Mitch there, it's as if none of her breakdown matters since he can take care of everything.
@goawayleavemealone2880
@goawayleavemealone2880 2 жыл бұрын
@@thingthang2904 - Just because you're a Feminist doesn't mean that the misogyny you so desperately crave is everywhere you look. For all of his failings Hitchcock was extremely adept at creating complex female characters, who were actually strong and independent - instead of just acting strong and independent when it wouldn't be inconvenient. Melanie is broken by her circumstances not because men willed it because they hate her... or whatever stupid thing you think. Also I'm not saying this because you're a woman, if you were a male Feminist it would still be a brain meltingly stupid observation.
@thingthang2904
@thingthang2904 2 жыл бұрын
@@goawayleavemealone2880 I'm not a woman and I'm not a feminist so there goes that. Every assumption you made (both about my character and my argument) is off. I never said Hitchcock didn't write female characters well. I didn't even say he wrote Melanie poorly. I never said Melanie is broken because of some man (nor do I believe it). I said that Mitch taking over and becoming a solution to Melanie's obstacles takes away from the impact that her breakdown has. Melanie gets weaker but the stakes hit a wall with Mitch there saving her. The trope doesn't bother me just because it's a trope. It bothers me because it becomes too convenient to the plot for my liking.

While I understand being upset over Melony seemingly acting "weaker", nows a good time for a friendly reminder that strong female characters can still be strong and have moments of weakness. She'd been through so much at this point, it's understandable that she'd be in shock. Strong characters don't have to be strong all the time to be considered such.

Its a good tactic to scare the audience . Like Ripley finally being alone on the escape pod at the end of Alien (she was almost hyperventilating) the plot builds a character that seems unshakeable, and then finally shakes them at the climax. "The cool spunky lady is scared of the birds? Oh dang I better be scared of the birds too!"

Those cockatiels are so cute😊. Though I’m so sorry for the poor sound editor- I can only imagine. My brother owns a sun conure and trust me you can’t have a simple phone call without the bird interrupting. Edit-never mind they do interrupt. Man I miss the days I only babysat a cockatiel. They actually whistle and chirp instead of screaming like a toddler wanting ice cream.

When audiences left the U.K. premiere at the Odeon, Leicester Square, London, they were greeted by the sound of screeching and flapping birds from loudspeakers hidden in the trees to scare them further. Sir Alfred Hitchcock revealed on The Dick Cavett Show (1968) that 3,200 birds were trained for the movie. He said the ravens were the cleverest, and the seagulls were the most vicious. It is never revealed why the birds started attacking people.

I have to commend you for this video. You brought the entire movie back to life as well as placed it in the context of the times (with appropriate humor). My parents did not allow me to see this in the theatre. When I finally did get to see it, it was the scariest movie I had ever seen. But what I didn't realize until now was how intricate and inventive was the plot also. This is what movie making is all about. Unquestionably one of the greatest movies ever made, IMHO.

I remember having a lengthy discussion with someone about this film, he insisted that it wasn't - and couldn't be - any good because it's just about normal birds and not scary. My position was that is exactly Hitchcock's genius - taking something as innocuous and everyday as birds and presenting them in such a way as to make them ominous through clever use of silence, tension and direction. Kind of dressing a sheep in wolf's clothing! They're not genetic experiment zombirds or slavering birdasauruses, they're just seagulls and crows and the like, and that's way more creepy. I bet a lot of people after seeing this when it came out looked a little more warily up at the trees as they walked through the park just as Jaws made people more cautious of going in the sea! The scene with the crows gradually, quietly, accumulating in the playground is an absolute classic to me, and the first thing I always think of with this film.
@peppercat1887
@peppercat1887 5 жыл бұрын
If I remember right, Hitchcock was a firm believer that the most scary issues to press on us are normalities and tension. He didn't believe gore and monsters are scary but things like the unknown, the incomprehensible, warped normalities. For example, running away from something dangerous but you don't know what it is and as you hide, your fear of getting caught of the unknown. It's the same principle why people are almost having salvation when it comes to having knowledge of missing people. You always wonder what happened, you are puzzled, you fear for their health etc. It's so bad, for the large majority of people, it's always better to have knowledge of what is going on. Hitchcock was potentially the all time great for true Psychological Horror.

Man their lucky they weren't in Australia or the islands around New Guinea because then they would have to be dealing with cassowaries and those things can rip apart a car door with one kick and run as fast as a human The Birds would really have been the prequel to Jurassic Park if that was the case lol.

My English teacher paused it sounding serious saying "look!" We are all confused. And then she points at her shoes and said "those are 2 toned oxford shoes. What a waste.." I love her
