In 2022, we met up and hung out (not dating anymore but friends), and she brings out a box and asks me if I want this stuff back. It's full of a jumble of the A/V's components and cables. Me: "What do you watch video and listen to music on now?" Her: "My iPad and my phone." Me (looking at the tiny iPad screen): "Oh. I'll take this down to the car." @@djoetma I still have the inclination to view Sony as the first option, but I have to remind myself they're not what they used to be. Resting on their laurels after they were on top for so long instead of giving you that reason to believe "Oh this is Sony, so it must be the best/cutting edge." They coasted on that for a while after realizing they could and never really seemed to get ahead again before the rest of the tech world caught up and passed them by in the 2000's. They seemed to be innovative in hardware and now everything is being perfected on the software/firmware side while using generic hardware. Something they don't particularly seem good at.
@sboinkthelegday38929 ай бұрын
But Sony is currently doing something similar with Playstation Link, and like last time it doens't seem to go anywhere in the competition of convenience over anything else. Marketing just doesn't work, people will smugly retort that everything is "unnecessary" and then complain when the "necessary basics" never deliver the full experience. Always just " I can do that for 10% of the price!" and get 10% of the quality. You call it "software/firmware side" seemingly with no understanding what these audio components actually DO, they ARE hardware. And as hardware they are also hurt by draconian US licensing laws, and EU micro-managing regulation like "every phone needs replaceable battery" which makes you need to dodge definitions and remove the phone capabilities of integrated battery systems. Or perhaps drop the off-the-shelf firmware, which may rely on integrated battery when this or that function NEEDs constant power. Now you must cram in also a BACKUP battery and wait for regulations to figure out if they mean an EXCLUSIVE or INCLUSIVE removable battery. And then people dare just demand better marketing, like invisible hand of the market, but it has to rig their options like planned economy and guide them to not self-sabotage.

You can replicate surround sound pretty darn well via headphones. Multidriver headsets. I've had 2 of them, an old Speedlink Medusa "true" 5.1 with 8 drivers total, 4 per ear I recall. And by current set, Razer Tiamat V2 with 5 drivers per ear. The ability to pinpoint sound and the best feeling of surround sounds, that beats my 5.1 home cinema set in a number of ways, comes from the Razer headset. Setup correctly, and that's the important part, they are an astounding bit of kit, but I must add, main use is PC gaming, so they are cabled too. Both the sets mentioned offered unparalleled surround performance and I've tried a lot of alternatives that attempt to mimic surround through 1 driver per ear, as you say, they lose centre channel and the performance is generally average to poor. Multidriver headsets should still be manufactured, but didn't seem to sell so well, despite the significant performance increase, certainly for PC gaming at least, but this could easily have a benefit for console gaming and movies. They weren't very expensive either!

You could buy some cheap, disposable headphone covers. You'll get 10 or so in a pack and they're sold as 'disposable' but they last for ages, especially if it's just you using them. They'll keep the ear cups pretty much free from grease and would help soak up some sweat. I use them on my headphones and the cups look like new, but they're a year old and have daily, heavy use. You can buy covers for the headband too, which will probably save you in the long run, especially if the headband on those is none removable.

1:45. Hello my friend - you are a caring person indeed for taking a stray, and I thank you as I’m sure that sweet fella does! ❤ I am commenting to let you know that your new friend is in the “loaf” position here potentially, though it’s hard to tell since he’s not on a flat surface - a proper loaf will have the paws poking out from underneath the chest. This position is indicative of a painful condition for the cat, and that almost always means some manner of dehydration especially once they come indoors - anyways if you have the means, consider a visit to the vet and a full workup, and for stray there are a lot of nasty things a vet will know to look for.. If you explain he is a stray that you took in, 90% of vets will give you a serious discount for that initial work to determine the overall health - they might chip his ear tho. Be sure to give canned food as much as u can, as cats cannot easily drink from stationary water sources like dogs, and are accustomed to getting the majority of their water intake from their prey. Sorry I don’t mean to be that person or whatever lol - but I do love my cats ❤

My 1979 AKG K240 headphones started to shed black dust from the foam. I asked AKG and they recommended a repairer who refurbished the foam and replaced the cracked head band plastic. The cost was similar to a brand new replacement but for me still worth it. Being wired no battery problems. I sometimes watch movies late at night on headphones to allow me to push the volume up. Not the same effect as full surround but it also depends if the movie has a stereo sound track as well as a 6 channel one. Mixing down 6 channels to two can make the dialogue hard to separate from the background music. A supplied stereo sound track has that sorted out for you. When I first had a 6 channel set up I would upscale stereo to surround. It was rare for this to be worth while, beyond the demonstration. I am still finding that for the majority of television and movies the surround does little. Which means on the few it comes as a pleasant surprise when you do notice the sound from all channels with action off centre behind you and all around.

Another great video, Mat! Not too surprised about the state of the earphones, if anything I'm pleasantly surprised that the other pair you bought didn't have their earmuffs disintegrating while just sitting in the box. Hopefully you get at least a few years use out of them. As for my own solution, I'm fortunate enough to live by myself with no pets, but my own sound options are pretty meager (just a LG soundbar that does 3.1.2.); since I use my Xbox Series console as my general media device (it's an okay UHD bluray player, not the best but it loads discs into memory a lot faster than the other players I've used and the media app support is much better), I've just been using a pair of Dolby Atmos-enabled LucidSound headphones that natively work with the console over the Xbox RF (later versions used BT or other options). I'm sure they wouldn't really compare to a high-end enthusiast solution formerly produced by Sony, but they have pretty large earmuffs that are easily removable (something I've noticed Sony has moved away from for some earphones, the WH-1000XM5) and mechanical volume switch (and being gaming headphones, they have a detachable mic). Quality honestly seems pretty good, and there's no Dolby Atmos delay. Hope your cat appreciates all the trouble you're going through!

@@funnyfarm299 On the budget end of things, the stuff now made in China isn't as good as any of the made in Japan stuff was. Some of the current Sony branded stuff is like the Somy knock offs that were laughed at back in the day.

I still buy Sony audio, but the japanese manufacturers were pushed out by the Chinese and Korean competition, and the mid market sadly died. It's all either audiophile/enthusiast or cheap crap. So to keep going Sony sadly had to double down on being the PlayStation and media conglomerate, and away from tech

@@techno1561but are multichannel audio headphones ever deliver a quality "home theatre" experience? Many smaller drivers don't seem like they'll give you sound that has enough dynamics.

I've got the WH-L600 which I believe are 7.1ch but use the same cup/pads design, I use them daily since the last 2-3 years and the earpads start looking like this (althought I carefully wipe them after use), so it gives you an idea on how "new" they are. The L600 base stand charges the battery and the HDMI arc only "pulls" the audio from the TV, it doesn't act like an HDMI switch so any video format works...I'd strongly recommend that one.

same, have used MDR-DS6500 and then switched to HW-7000DS and finally swapped out them for the WH-L600 a couple of years ago.

The Apple TV can apparently accept audio over eARC, allowing you to listen to surround sound from any other source via the AirPods (fyi)

Hard to believe no one else is making anything like that. Sucks that you got a used set on Amazon sold as new. I would expect that from eBay, but not Amazon! Cute kitty.

Fascinating review, thanks so much. As a passing suggestion, might I suggest (ouch, retailing at £599) - the blinking awesome Apple Airpod Max over-ear headphones !!! We now own a pair, (or actually two pairs as my wife initially got hers and I was somewhat blown away and subsequently bought a pair myself). Reasons for my recommendation? OK, first is that chest rumbling low-end bass . I mean it really is good. At a guess, I would estimate the frequency response being as low as 4 hz. (Sony, I believe starts at 20Hz) Second is as you mentioned,; the clarity of channel separation. The sound-stage really is exceptionally good. And thirdly is that overhead soundstage. As something not easily reproduced thru 6 to 9.1 surround sound technologies, Dolby Atmos on the other hand really does do a pretty fine job. DRAWBACKS? Only two that I can think of. First: It seems to me that only very recently recorded soundtracks provide that enormous, roaring, overhead soundstage, (save that , very oddly enough, of the very old 1970s / 80s recorded material that HASN'T been sound-enhanced - such as Genesis, Steve Hackett & David Bowie). And finally, the build quality. Though finely engineered, and they are, they don't stand up to well to being used to the point that they get too warm. (Over use can run the risk of frying the circuitry). We've gone thru two previous pairs already. Other than that: I blinking love them. (One other track to play, If you get a pair, is Ultravox Astrodene on KZbin. The roaring low-end synths are spellbinding).

If you can't find a new pair of a certain pair of headphones, there are some people that will make custom cushions and refurbish them. But Sonys are notorious for turning to dust.

They aren't the only ones to degrade like that. I have audio technicas that did that. I also bought some customs that fit perfect and are actually better and more comfortable. I also bought a wrap that goes around the headband it zips on. That worked well too
@alexkiddonen9 ай бұрын
You can add Sennheisers hd 280 "Pro" to that list. All crumbly and falling apart... They still work though. Unlike those shitty AKG 52s which very quickly abandoned one side forever. These AKGs "cushions" are still doing great on the other hand. Earphones of all brands (Philips are a special kind of disappointment in this area) seem to have the "one side only working from now on, deal with it" issue pretty consistently. I don't want bluetooth bullshit that needs batteries or constant recharging. Do I really have to spend a fortune for some nice quality AND durability? I'm not even producing content of any kind, I just want to listen in peace without worrying how long until they die on me. jesus...

This is EXACTLY the same reason I use headphones (Sony MDR-RF855RK) 98% of the time I watch movies or TV! I have a very nice and powerful 7.1 setup (all floor standing speakers, except center & SW of course), but my cat runs away and hides whenever there are large explosions or loud noises. So I don't want to upset him and only use the speakers when I have guests coming over. So good on you!

Choosing a pet is nice, but getting chosen by a pet is the best. Even if it's food motivated at first :P With all the advancements in Bluetooth and whatnot I do wonder if someone could just come out with a decent base station with those options and let you use your own high quality Bluetooth headphones. Probably wouldn't be as seamless, but it would be nice to have the freedom to pick and choose either half to upgrade as time goes on without having to replace the whole thing.

I had bought Logitech G35 headphones back in the day. Maybe early 2010's. I rarely used them, but when i pulled them out sometime last year, the foam cups were falling apart exactly like that. I rarely used them so I'm guessing it's the material breaking down. I thought it was strange considering I used them all of MAYBE 20 hours.

@@HNedel That would explain why only very minimal use causes it. For me it was a VR Box I bought back in 2016. Has the same pleather lining where it sits on your face. I went to use it last week for the first time in years and my face was covered in that disintegrated debris just like in the video.

Into that myself, been listening and watching Apple TV through Dolby Atmos headset for like 3 years now and for me there is currently no going back in terms of cost and convenience, closest to audio/videophile as you can get for the money on a digital provider, very nice, am a fan. Maybe one day I will upgrade the old DD stereo and speakers, doubtful though, just don't feel i'm missing anything and hard to justify upgrading, again...
