OMG, this thing Ryan talks about where Deaf folks have to look up while eating to keep track of the conversation!! I was just trying to play a game on my tablet while "watching" KZbin vids (I listen to them, and look up often)... I was like, Holy shit, deaf people have to REALLY be *in the moment* while existing. Because I couldn't "watch" your channel while playing the game. I had to physically be looking at the screen to see everything Ryan was saying. Like, driving me crazy when I want to multi-task, but it was a REALLY clear example of what it's like to be Deaf in the world. If you're doing something, you have to fully be doing that thing, if it requires your eyes.

I absolutely love that you two are spreading Deaf awareness. Yes, it is important to inform this topic because I feel like a lot people are just genuinely uninformed of the Deaf culture. I'm sure this will educate a lot of what they do not know. And I do agree about being tired after having to focus on what people are saying to you at parties. Thank you for taking the time to make this! Can't wait for part 2! 🤗

Honestly guys, I understand you so much. My boyfriend is British and I am Spanish. My family can´t speak English and my bf can´t speak Spanish. It is EXHAUSTING to interpret all the time for him and most of the times I have to speak for others but I don´t have much chance to speak for myself. It is definitely hard...

Ive always avoided family functions because of the communications. Even now i get scoffed at because they made it sound like im being a big whiny 37 yr old kid. I got sick and tired of explaining or arguing my side from Deaf point of view. So i just stay home. Sad but thats the reality for most of us Deaf individuals.

I am so happy that one of your videos randomly showed up in my recommended feed somehow. I have been binge watching so many of your guys’ videos and you two just warm my heart in so many ways. I remember learning basic ASL when I was a kid and I was just enthralled by it. I loved it. I think it appealed to me much more than the average hearing person because due to some pretty intense verbal/physical bullying, I became so quiet, socially awkward, and shy that it felt like I could finally be myself when I signed instead of spoke to people. Overtime I unfortunately lost track and stopped practicing as I didn’t know anyone who signed back then, so I don’t know much ASL these days at all, but your videos have reignited the passion and love for it that I had when I was a kid! Sorry for the long comment, I have just been enjoying you two so much that I had to say thank you for spreading such vital information and being a tremendous support for not only deaf and hard of hearing folks, but for us hearing folks who have such admiration, love and respect for you all. ❤️👍🏻 Keep up the great content, we appreciate you both immensely!

Oh...I’m an introvert with a little bit of social anxiety and already feel like I can relate😅even though I will always stay friendly and engage with people, but it can still feel overwhelming, and afterwards in my own time I get so exhausted sometimes...!! And often I just don’t feel like going in the first place (even though I really enjoy other people’s company!). It must be so much more tiring for Ryan, with the physical aspect and not being able to instantly hear and know when a conversation starts, or who’s talking at who, etc. I say I can relate, but there’s no way I can really understand how you and other deaf people feel, and the amount of effort you put in. It’s kind of you to share these experiences on KZbin. Thank you both so much!!

I have deaf cousin in our family. When It's just our family... It's normal. We're talking with her at the same time We're eating. But when we go out or go to other relatives house we don’t see often, she goes quite. She's really cheery and eager to talk when It's just ourselves.but in outside she just goes quite, she doesn’t use her deaf voice. She just politely eats and we would occasionally translate words for her.It might sound like we're ignoring her. It's not that. She doesn't mind. She's 17 and really don’t want to be part of adults conversation. And we have an extended family. So there's always someone with her to accompany her.We never let her feel isolated.

And I end up being so exhausted mentally, physically and emotionally (depressed) because I wish I could be included playing this game with my family but I stayed back because it is a lot of work. My dad noticed and he felt sad for me because it too hard with everything going on at once and at least my dad noticed which means a lot. I just read my book instead or isolate myself whether it is alone or my future partner one day.

I get Ryan feeling mentally exhausted, I feel like that after family events and there isn’t even a language barrier. I see how you two are stuck in a hard place. Would you ever consider hiring an interpreter to go with to big events like this?

This reminds me of my family (Danish/Spanish couple). When we visit Spain and family, I try my best to follow the conversation, but my Spanish is not good enough for the speed and volume of people speaking. The best is if there is room for a break in a couch with a book or a walk to get some rest, which helps of staying longer without getting grumpy.

I haven't really had it easy either my family doesn't sign and they are not willing to learn sign language and I never got the proper accommodations in high school and I never got accommodations until now and I am in college. I've never had any good experience. Also its different for me I started to lose my hearing when I was 13 years old and now I am 18 and completely deaf now. I never had access to ASL and the way I learned was through my HS and now I finally have an interpreter which is something new and foreign to me because I've never had an interpreter before.

I understand exactly what it's like at events where people are talking all at once and you do you concentrate really hard watching lips expressions It is very draining Another hard one is on the phone Because you can't see the person's mouth you have to really concentrated I get very fustrated when I can't hear something. I wish I had Ryan's paitence! My partner just assumed if he tells I'll be able to hear It's not the case I don't hear anything when someone is behind me Or when they don't speak clearly or slowly. I am totally enjoying these sign duo videos Thankyou

I have a big family, and even being hearing -- it's not really possible to keep up with all the conversations! Maybe it would help to adjust expectations, and focus on talking to the person having a conversation with you, & try not to worry about the conversations on the other side of the room, or the other end of the table. If you explain to them and remind them (since you don't see them often) they won't expect you to participate in multiple conversations at the same time. It'd still be hard, but at least you wouldn't have as much emotional stress & can feel more comfortable. They can also feel more comfortable knowing what to expect. You can also let them know how exhausting it is for you. It sounds like they would be understanding. Why not try telling them you need to take a break? You could go in another room or outside, or even just a quieter corner of the room, and then come back to the group when you feel up to it. That would give Ellen a break too, without having to leave. If you explain how challenging it is for you, they wouldn't see it as rude at all. If you just disappear, then they might wonder why, but if you say you are tired and need to rest, it would be fine. There have been times when a perfectly healthy person in my family decides to take a break for a little bit. Being in a big group can get tiring or overwhelming for some people even without physical challenges. No one thought that they were being rude or didn't want to be with the family. They just took a break & then came back later. If you explain that you need a break, it doesn't have to be a big deal. I have chronic illness and I get exhausted very easily. It varies from day to day, but sometimes just sitting on the couch talking for a couple hours can wear me out. My family knows about my physical challenges, so they don't expect me to do more than I am able to do. Sometimes I'm just too tired, and say, "I think I need to go lie down." Sometimes I feel better and can visit more after resting, but either way, they understand. I think as long as you participate when you can, and express your love for them and let them know that you enjoy spending time with them, everyone will be happy.

I enjoy watching you sooo much!! :) Ryan said he is learning so much about the hearing world through his relationship w/ Ellen, but didn't Ryan say he grew up attending hearing schools all of his life, and all of his family members are hearing, too. So, didn't Ryan already see it all and learn all about the hearing world from just the exposure to it for 17 years?

I have social anxiety disorder and I SO relate to feeling exhausted and wanting to leave after a while not because I don't like the company but because I've just reached my limit and anything beyond that is painful and it makes me come across as impolite and uninterested. Especially if it's a medium-sized group (as is usually the case with gatherings), by the time I get home I'm sluggish, I can barely drag myself around and I'm so drained my movements are uncoordinated and my speech slurry you'd think I'm tipsy. I feel like I just finished giving a performance. And it's v hard to explain to other people, they just can't understand that it has nothing to do with them. "If you're having a good time, why would you want to leave??" And the more I'm pressured to stay over my "limit", the more I dread and postpone going over next time, and they take that as confirmation that they were right and I actually don't like going over, when everything would go over so well for everyone if we'd keep it "short and sweet"-then I would enjoy myself the whole time and I would go more often because I know I won't be suffering by the end. But some people are willing to understand, if you explain and then give them time to understand, accept, and see with their own eyes that it's true, and they try to accommodate me. For example, I usually go over with my parents and I feel so guilty whenever I want to leave and make them leave as well. So what we do is sometimes when I'm starting to feel tired, they let me go into another room to watch TV, be on the internet, read a book, take a nap, just allow me to be by myself for a while without getting offended. Sometimes I even come out and interact again if I'm feeling better by the end of it. Or if there's no other room to be alone in, they again, allow me, without getting offended, to retreat from the conversation and do all those things enumerated above on the couch in the same room or at the table, etc. Just being able to not pretend I'm comfortable and not exhausted is so important and appreciated, since keeping up the "facade" itself is one of the main things that contribute to my exhaustion. :)

You guys are great!...Ryan, why don't you just explain that you need time out from concentrating on focusing on so many conversations, and just have a walk for an hour or a nanna nap. I'm not deaf, but I find social interaction tiring and difficult and my husband wants to stay much longer at parties and catch up with friends. (We normally live in a remote area so catch ups are rare.) So I just started getting in to the habit of excusing myself and going to lie down for a nap for an hour or so, then came back into the party with a second wind and ready to go. Nobody thinks anything of it and now they just expect me to disappear and come back refreshed when I go to social gatherings.

My husband has serious social anxiety and MY family is a lot to handle. He will last as long as he can, then I take him home and go back. Fortunately, we live less than 10 minutes away. I understand any "pull" you may feel, Ellen.

Sounds like introverts who get energy when alone and being with people is exhausting. My bf and I are the same so we show up late and leave early because company is so tiring especially a big family gathering.

I understand what you guys going through. I have something that might help you. There is an apps called “I can’t hear” It can interpreted from voice to texting but it’s only work with the internet available. Try that. Take care guys!

I'm not trying to tell you how to go about your lives. And I'm sure family is very important to you guys and you wanna be present the whole time. But maybe, Ellen can get there at whatever time she would normally get there. Spend 1-2 hours with her family by herself. Talk, catch up the whole thing. Then Ryan can get there a little later, and by that time Ellen maybe can have more free time to interpret

Ive watched many videos about how her family handles signing, but there is little discussion on Ryan's up bringing and how he dealt with his family trying to communicate at a young age

Wow I can't believe this craziness but i can relate to ryan because i have hard of hearing but i dnt sign and i want to but i know my family won't learn it... anyways yeah i can get exhausted when I'm trying to listen in a crowded loud environment and communicate with my family and when someone says something to me I couldn't hear them just pretend that i heard them n just nod.... so yeah i would just be in the corner so i dnt be rude to anyone from how exhausted i am trying to hear my fam 😖 it's a headache. Well actually like my everyday life trying to be involve and included in the conversation but then i just fake a smile and just dream in my head that I'm talking to them back 😂😅😖

Somhow I know exactly how Ryan feels. I'm an introvert, I don't need to be deaf, to have the same experiences... But at least, you can put it on your deafnis, I only get confused faces...

Is it difficult to talk to eachother while either of you are driving, since you have to pay attention to the road. Do you have to constantly look at the person when they're signing or can you understand from a side view?

I am always pleased to see my regular customer he is deaf he takes almost the same drink sometimes he changes it so I always have a pen and paper ready! I would make sure since he cannot hear to wave at him so then he knows his drinks is ready ^^ Even if I am on the till I am ready to be on the hand of point because my colleagues sometimes don’t understand it very well they talk too fast/shout and most of the time have their eyes ready on the next drink 😔 so yeah I am the only one of my team deaf aware By the way is it weird to say I can understand some words coming out of Ryan ?like kind of a whispering voice?>

My wife loves your channel and introduced it to me tonight. I'm a new sub, so apologies if you have communicated this before, but Ryan: can you drive deaf? I ask because when you were describing your exhaustion at constantly tracking multiple conversations with your eyes and trying to stay as involved as you can, I just wondered if you could head home while Ellen stays a while longer?
