I'm a CODA and I hope people understand that name signs are only given my someone in the deaf culture to a hearing person. My mom gave me mine and usually interpreters get thiers from groups of deaf people they sign with :). Thank you so much Netflix for showing that the deaf community is a culture too. 💕

I took basic sign language classes. My teacher is deaf and we had an interpreter in the classroom. At the the end of the semester she promise to give us our sign for our names, never did lol think she forgot about it. Didn’t realize until now! I can’t wait to see this on Netflix though 💕

This is really cool! It's kind of like the japanese writing system when you think about it, they've got the sillabary for most things but also those logograms where one sign means one word, and they're also "logical" like put together from meaningful units. This probably also has interesting consequences for the subculture, like, there were many cultures with self-chosen or acquired names (roman cognomina, many north American tribes...) but that's no longer present in mainstream western society except for maybe internet names and artistic pseudonyms. I mean I already think of myself more as "Kendrix" than as the name my parents gave me and I can actually hear it. If all people I can actually interact with called me the sign name I would probably definitely think of that as my proper name - and would be more like how in South Africa or in some asian immigrant communities they have a name in their own languages that their familie used and a more english/"Christian" sounding one for official business. That said this probably varies hugely by the individual. I'm also somewhat torn because I don't know wether to look at the subtitles or at them gesticulating, it's very expressive even if you don't understand it, but I kinda still do wanna understand it. If I had infinite time I would probably want to learn this (like a bunch of other languages) - I wouldn't know wether to go for the American variant (to understand ppl over the internet) or the one "spoken" in my home country. (So I could talk to a deaf person if I met them on the street - though I don't presently know one) My sister was thinking of learning it because she's studying to be a social worker and she says it's pretty hard to get a place in a course even for her. Our government should probably do something about that.

Sounds great, but it's hard to read and see the sign in the same time.. New: Finally, it was great, it's an good show(I didnt finish it yet). I think if it was dub, it'd lose his charm. And it didnt bother me much (maybe because I'm on phone, and its easier to read and see the sub) But I understand other people could be bother, so maybe add a dub for this, but like we can watch without too.

@Sobkou You're able to change the subtitle font, color, and size with Netflix! I had to do it from my laptop, but I believe it's under the profile settings. There are a lot of different options to play around with and it applies it to all of your devices. Additionally, it appears that audio description is available for this show :)

A sign name isn’t a nickname. It’s a personalized sign for YOU based on your personality or appearance or even simply something like tapping your initial of your first name on your chest. It’s a name, not a mere nickname. It only refers to the person who’s name sign it is. :) it’s so they don’t have to spell it all out all the time like M-I-C-H-A-E-L or A-S-H-L-E-Y. You’d just use one sign instead of always spelling.

@@Irisroot yes more about signing in general and maybe things people outside of deaf culture wouldn't know of. I understand some of it because my friend has learned ASL and she spends a lot of time with the deaf community. I picked up some signs from her and joined her at some events and i think its really fascinating and interesting. I was just just annoyed with that cheap shot like i really would just like to hear more about the deaf people not more political stuff. the world is saturated with it

If you would like, I could tell you about it or give you links to videos of Deaf people talking about it. just let me know if there is anything you would like to learn about specifically. some things I have picked up when talking with deaf people is that they are very straight forward. they don't beat around the bush like us hearing folks. they might come up to you and say "hey! looks like you have put on some weight!" and not mean it in an offensive way. they are also very physical and like to give hugs to people they just met and sign "I love you" when saying goodbye. the hugging part is something that has stopped due to covid though. they also take forever to say goodbye. Deaf people don't get a lot of chances to socialize with people that speak the same language as them, so they take advantage of it and a lot of times get very sidetracked.

@@Momo-po5tn since this video is about name signs, here some info on name signs. (this is taken out of my textbook). First, off they must be given by a Deaf person. you can't make your own name sign, and a lot of times it is considered rude to ask for one. a reason for this is that being given a name sign that is already the name of a Deaf person in the area is considered an insult to the Deaf person since name signs are very personal. If a Deaf person moves to the area and already has a name sign that is Identical to a hearing person's, the hearing person's name sign is changed. being given a name sign is a form of being accepted into the Deaf community. sometimes name signs are similar within a family and can include their beginning letter tapping on the same part of the body or something like that to show they are part of that family. If a name sign is made using the letters of the alphabet, it is called an "arbitrary" name sign. those use at most 2 hand shapes and are placed in one of 3 places on the body. Neutral (in front of the body), near the shoulders or arms/chin, or on two locations. there is also "descriptive" name signs which describe someone, such as big ears, or curly hair. those are usually given to Deaf people. a third category is "non-traditional" name signs, which are usually made as a joke. an example would be president nixons name sign was a "N" combined with the sign for "Lie" Name signs are never used directly to the person, they are only used when referring in 3rd person. also when introducing yourself, fingerspell your name and then show your sign name. (in my textbook it says that if you are hearing, never give your sign name unless specifically asked for it which you probably won't be.)
