Ultra sonic parking sensor generally work at 40khz frequency (same as bats use !) You can show individual sensors on a scope with the Pico Automotive ultrasonic probe or alternatively a cheap Chinese ultrasonic leak detector will let you hear the signal.

Go to as many training classes as you can. I worked as an Industrial Mechanic. When PLC's were becoming popular Allen Bradley was offering training classes. The company I worked for was willing to pay and send us for this training. Most of the guys turned it down because some travel was involved and it required several days away from home. I went to every class they offered. I took many classes in PLC troubleshooting and programing. If you work with controls the training is invaluable. Much of the training you can relate to other aspects of equipment repair. If you get the chance do it!! The information you receive will carry with you through your career.

I took the Ron Beaufort Allen Bradley Control Logix/SLC500/PLC5 training a few years ago. I had a pretty good understanding of the PLC but WOW Ron really taught some unique troubleshooting and programming steps. I go to any training available.

@@norcal715 Yes, I have taken them as well. One of the first classes I took was the SLC 150. At the time my company would only supply us with the handheld access device. I was the only one in the class that used one. Other students never seen one. lol Everyone else was using laptops. They did finally get us a laptop but it took a while. lol

I feel networked with these guys because they are so active in the comments.. They've already helped me on several issues. If you ask interesting questions, they love to jump in and help you out.. which is awesome. Being a regular commenter on these channels is really a blessing and a good resource IMO. It may take a day or two to get a response, but you still have access to it. If they were getting millions of views per video, I don't think it would be that way--- there's no way they could keep up with all the comments. So it's interesting that it's just the right size to still have access to these guys. (guys being: Ivan, Eric O, Paul Danner, Keith, Mario, Dan, etc.. there are many)

Your Mystique amazes me with the milage you got (🗣️ before the Tapanzee bridge). Both my vehicles are 20 plus yrs old. My daily driver is a 2001 Durango SLT Plus and a 2003 Dakota SLT extended cab, both bought in 2006. I replaced the engine in the Durango in 2019 at 174k and it's running beautifully. They were my parents vehicles and I inherited them and still keep em going. The Dakota has 239k miles on the original engine and transmission (night with 16,000 miles) and have only replaced the water pump outside routine maintenance 😊

The training classes are one of the best investments you can make into yourself and your business. To go along with that though you also need an understanding of the fundamentals behind what makes things work. You demonstrated that clearly with the Toyota. A scan tool was of no use but your reasoning and deducing skills were what solved the problem. Great vid.

simple way to test ultrasonic sensors is with your phone , I use a sound level app. put the phone near the sensor you should see activity and hear some clicking

I use a engine or doctors stethoscope with just a hose attached and you can hear the sensors heartbeat. Be sure to have in reverse or forward gear with just key on 😊

That's the key to this Mercury still being alive... The fact that it's a manual transmission. I had bought a Mercury sable when I was 14 (worked all summer with my uncle in mid 1990's) and my mother decided to drive it when her car had some issues.. and she ended up destroying my transmission before I ever got of age to drive it. lol.. So I bought a used trans for 300.. g-pa helped me put it in; and I did get to drive it for about a year, before the trans died again.. luckily (by dumb luck) my uncle bought a wrecked sable just like mine- for the engine; and I put his transmission (the 3rd one now) into my sable... and I helped him put the 6 cylinder sable engine into a little extended cab 5spd Ford Ranger and turn that thing into a speed d3mon. That Ranger was awosme after that. (4x4 and manual trans). The Mercury/ Ford front wheel drive automatics were horrific... but you did well buying a manual. All my cars after that were manuals.. and I'll never go back

I wish the 2nd gen Taurus /sable (92-95 body style) was covered with a manual. I like those cars. Bought a 93 3.8L sable wagon in mint condition back in 02 for $300 with blown headgaskets and only 70k miles. Fixed it up and drove that for a while. I worried about the trans but it was ok for me. I kept the fluid changed but the failures were not always fluid related.

@@volvo09 Yeah.. My sables were all high mileage.. like up near 200k. I was young and didn't know much about cars or common problems on some vehicles, etc.. I learned that lesson the hard way. :) .. but I did learn how to work on cars during that time-- so it's a bit of a blessing when I look back: having to overcome such overwhelming mechanical issues at such a young age. I got smarter at picking them after that. I bought a 97 Isuzu Rodeo that was 5spd 4x4, and drove it over a decade. I absolutely love that thing and I still have it... Then a 95 F150 5spd 4x4.. and later a 2002 F350 7.3L diesel, 6spd manual 4x4. etc.. I drove each of these for 10 years each. lol. Manual 4x4 is the only way to go. Or at least like a honda or toyota that's manual AWD

For whatever reason, Toyota decided that the Tundra, Tacoma and 4Runner would retain archaic electronic underpinnings, going back to pre-2014. It wasn't until the 2023 (Possibly 22?) Tundra that we'd see modern systems like in the rest of the lineup. This particular park sensor arrangement that's coordinated by the Combination Meter predates IPA/ICS, and while there are limited data PIDS in the Combination Meter, your diag method here is the quickest and most effective way to narrow down an issue. It's incredibly common to find any one of the 6+ "bulk" connectors not properly seated, not plugged in at all, or invaded by dirt on collision vehicles. I've seen pinched rear main harnesses on bed side jobs from sliding the bed back enough to replace a bed side. These trucks can be a diagnostics nightmare just because of the lack of scantool interaction and the number of subsystems that exist entirely on their own and only report bare minimum data to another module for driver interaction.

I've seen body shops leave the bumper bulk connectors half plugged in/ plugged in with dirt and the lock not engaged many a time, and the first thing I do is tug on the connector without touching the lock to see if that's the case off the bat, I suspect that or one of the sensor connectors weren't fully plugged it

I was given my father in laws 1995 Ford Contour 2.0 when the CD4E went out at 77000 miles. I replaced it with a used one and drove it another 100K and that one went out . Changed it again with a rebuilt one and is up and running again. It was the last and only new car he purchased. I have been keeping it going in honor of him. I replaced the timing belt at 77000 miles just as a precaution. Replaced the struts and coil springs which are known for breaking and did. Front wheel bearings and rear hubs. Valve cover gaskets and tune up . Have had problems with chaffing wires which Ford has a problem with. Liquid tape has kept it going. It's working great now and I wouldn't be afraid to drive it cross country. Doesn't use any oil between changes. Shooting for 300k now. Have you ever changed your timing belt and water pump?

Nice! The original water pump seized up at 220k miles so did the timing belt then too. Coil springs as well. Doesn't burn any oil at 300k miles which is amazing! 😀

I also upgraded the rear stabilizer from one out of a Cougar. Bigger rod. It gave it a more stable feel especially when cornering.

Meanwhile, I use two laptops that are so old, they can't support Windows 11. There's something satisfying about using equipment beyond its expected life.

He stopped dead and stared at us. In the end it was a module internally faulting on power. But the profi buss is in a string format. Lose the first one lose the rest. That explained having to reset all the down stream sensors.

We have a very expensive over-computed piece of equipment at work. We had an intermittent issue for months. Reset after reset after reset. The remote tech said he thinks there is an issue with the PROFI bus.

I bought my 87 S10 22 years ago with 141K on it, it’s currently got over 540K miles on it. I thought the transmission failed at around 160K and took it to a shop, it was the flex plate, but I had them rebuild the 700R4 anyway since it was out. Other than that all I’ve done was suspension, brakes, fluids and intake gaskets in my ownership. That little 2.8 can take some abuse.

During the opening shot of this video I was trying to figure out what vehicle you were in because it didn't look like the XL-7. I am thinking that Mystique is the base model (we got into a discussion once about that) and has the 2.0 liter Zetec engine; I am sure it returns good mileage. Congrats in 300,000 miles. The only thing worse than $1,100.00 for parking sensors is $5,600.00 for taillights. Just ask Brian with Ford Tech Makuloco. The ol' Marquis is getting ready to roll to 500,000 miles. Hi Ivan,Liked this video,in this case i would have done a visual 1st to look for a disconnected sensor,or a broken one in-case they just swapped them around.On the classes,when i work designing and making specialty parts for nail guns,and machines i always tried to go to any classes nearby given by manufacturers of stuff we MIGHT incorporate in the design.I liked them a lot,as a chance to get out of the shop for a day or two and lunches and car rentals and maybe a room on the business.And a lot of information FROM the GUYS that really know the parts.I went to one 120 miles away on LOC-TITE!!!Yes from 8am to 3 pm.I always thought you open the bottle put a few drops on the bolt or nut and it stays put.haha That class help me solve and issue we had where an assembly kept coming loose costing us thousands in a recall.Now that COVID is not in the light ,maybe there will be more classes.thanks buddy.

So, the Toyota was indeed a poor connection somewhere, that only needed multiple unplugging and plugging back to clear. Probably when the body work was done. They didn't plug the sensor in. As soon as the repair was done. They threw their hands up and said. We don't do that kind of work. Take it to a shop. 😅 I know because that happened to my daughter Sienna. After a bumper kisss incident with a bigger truck. 😅😅 The front end got the body work done. Then the AC system didn't want to work right. After a shop said the AC compressor is shot. Then its not working anymore. Again the shop said AC cornpressor is shot again. But the labour is not part of the warranty work.. I had purchased a new scanner. So I did what Ivan, Mr. O and other Pros who I watch on YoTube. Bought some test leads and bought a subscription to Alldata. Printed out wiring diagrams. This took me about 3 hours. I traced it to a temp sensor. When the crashed happened the body shop. Twisted the wires together and taped the crap of the repairs. I ordered a new sensor and pigtails. Soldiered the connection and head shrink. The AC came back to life. All because of Ivan,Mr O and many others. To this day I haven't taken my vehicles to a shop for repairs. I do admit. Taking my vehicles for an alignment after I replaced parts. Anyhow...I'm about to turn 70 in a few months. I'm an ole dog and learning new tricks. Just a few months ago....I bought a scope because of Ivan 😅😅😅

What did you learn at the lecture . . . ? I use to go to lectures in my field of Landscaping before I retired and sometimes they were very good but some predictions of where the industry was going never happened and a lot of things happened that were never predicted. Lots and lots of industry consolidations of big companies buying out small companies on the supply end. Same as in the automotive parts world.

Probably a good idea to use some deoxit on those sensor connections just to be sure especially in the east rust belt. Those guys teaching mechanics how to trace down issues also need to have some input in how to charge for all of the diagnostic time need just to find the problem. Todays vehicles require more diag time than older vehicles and then once its determined the fix is simple in most cases, replace a part. New vehicles are similar to any new "green deal" plan...the cost to get the improvements just do not have a lot of value to the individual people in society. There simply has to be a limit to benefits for the cost or value.

Ivan, if yours is a 5-speed manual/ 4 cylinder, it should be my MTX75 TRANS first used on the Mercury Mystique, and changed to cable operation in 1996, and the predecessor of my Zetec 2.0 I'm not sure of your lifters, mine are DAMB. "The Ford MTX-75 (Manual TransaXle) is a 5-speed transmission developed by Ford Motor Company for its larger-engined front wheel drive models. "75" refers to the distance in millimeters between the main and lay shafts". "Debuting in 1992, the transmission was developed in tandem with the Zetec family of engines. The transmission is optimised for transferring larger levels of torque than the older iB-series unit used on the Fiesta and Escort models. Other features include the provision of equal length driveshafts (to combat torque steer) and synchromesh on reverse gear. The transmission was first used on the Zetec-engined Escort Mk V (only XR3i), but its proper intended application was on the Mondeo and its derivatives (the American Ford Contour, Mercury Mystique and the New Edge Mercury/Ford Cougar). The 2000-2004 Focus with 2.0 litre Zetec engine, and the 2.3 liter Duratec engine with manual used this transmission, as well as all diesel powered versions of the Focus. My 2015 Focus has a MTX75 as well. Wouldn't have bought it without the manual transmission because the Powershift DCT is the worst thing to ever exist.

Geeeze, parking aids, lane assists, back up cameras, is it no wonder driver skills are getting worse and worse. My wife backed our SxS into a tree three feet away a few months ago. I told her that thanks to your backup camera in your Explorer, you don’t use your mirrors or turn your head and LOOK anymore.

obviously the car is afraid of heights. Take it off the lift. I wonder if they are like TPMS sensors and programed for each position, so swapping them got something upset.
