There's a major shift happening across the U.S. automotive landscape: car dealership closures. It’s 2024, and more dealerships are shutting their doors than we’ve seen in recent years. Why is this happening, and what does it mean for the future of car buying? In this video I take a deep dive into the data, the possible reasons behind these closures, and a closer look at the statistics.

I can't think of 1 person that enjoys going to a dealership or dealing with a dealership. We're all absolutely sick of false prices that don't apply to you. Deception has cost them.

There should only be used car dealerships. For new car dealerships we should cut out the middle man and be able to order from the manufacturer.

They’re not closing fast enough. Dealership is an outdated model. There’s a good reason people call them “stealerships.”

We need to have a Tesla and Rivian style model of operating dealership. Franchisees are being greedy. I saw a used Camry for 21k with 80k miles. What a ripoff!

Buying a anything online is more convenient, but how do you test seat comfort, transmission tuning, ride quality, and brake/throttle pedal feel without test driving the vehicle? How do you test the ergonomics of the cabin without experiencing it in person? A car is not like a smartphone. There are differences between models that are only apparent if you drive them back to back.

Test drive the model you're interested in at a used vehicle lot, from a private party, neighbor, friend, co-worker or friendly stranger. Some manufacturers have demonstrator vehicles which can be taken for a test drive at service centers. It's not difficult.

And some dealerships won’t allow a test drive without a credit check and more or less agreement that you will buy from them that day.

Oh you youngsters. This happened when I was a kid in the 70’s, and again in the early 80’s. A family friend worked for a car company, so we heard about the situations now and then. It’ll sort itself out, and what happens next will be the new thing for a while. But it will change again, etc. 👍🤪🏳️‍🌈

I'd also expect the cost to purchase a new or used car online would be less as the manufacturer would not have to share any incentive costs with the dealers and the dealers would be one less hand in the till (my pocket) to pay. We'd still have to go to a dealer or authorized manufacturer facility for warranty repairs and such, but where you go to have that done is totally up to you. I'd rather take the commission I'd normally have to pay that's baked into a car sale contract and get that TrueCoat (you really gotta have it, so Jerry tells us!) :-)

I don't have a garage, so I went to Advance auto early in the morning, buy parts there, and in their parking lot, changed front and back brakes, engine and transmission oil, filters, and new wipers in less than 2 hours. cost me about $350. If I went to a dealership, would have been about $1,200 or more.

It's easy to be frustrated with excessive mark ups or an exorbitant repair bill. However, competition helps to lower prices, less dealers (less competition) tends to raise prices. I think most people long for the days when customer service was a high priority, and ultimately most people don't want to have to drive hours when even the best vehicles need a minor warranty repair or experience the poor customer service if everything is online (think trying to explain what is going wrong with your car to an overseas operator that can simply hang up when they get frustrated with you). That's where the dealerships offering better service and more reasonable prices should be selling more vehicles. With regards to being frustrated with flat rate hour charges, the flat rate intention is to keep the charges more uniform. While having to pay for 3 hours and it only taking the seasoned mechanic 2 seems a rip off, having to pay 5 hours to a rookie mechanic who was not familiar with that job would be worse. The flat rates are derived from an average time of certified mechanics using hand tools (no air or battery powered) at the factory training center. Penalizing the best mechanics for continually investing in specialty tools to make jobs easier/ faster by paying them less because they are faster discourages efficiency and ingenuity. It is common for seasoned dealership technicians to have over 50k invested in tools that fit in a large rolling tool box. I don't like over paying for a car or over paying for service, but I do think less dealerships equals less service and higher prices. Buying a car online can be great and save some money as long as you are not trading. If you are trading you get less for your car because an appraiser has to be more conservative without seeing and driving the car in person. Anyways, just my 2 cents, maybe the stealerships that close will be replaced with dealerships that value customer service and reasonable prices.

I'm OK with some dealerships closing. In some markets there just seem to be way too many and sadly you're just another customer. Also, it's not like they want to really negotiate on their ridiculous prices or offer services at a fair price for their vehicles. If I buy a Chevrolet from a dealership that later needs post warranty service that dealership I bought it from should be giving me a discount for dealership\brand loyalty. i shouldn't be able to get the same service at an independent shop for significantly less. Also book hours for service which is now the standard for ALL dealerships I'm aware of is total BS. If the book says a repair is 4 hours but the dealership's mechanic completes in 2 hours I should only be paying for 2 hours.

Dealerships are closing because people wised up and realized the cars they currently have are ‘good enough’ and they don’t need the debt of a new (and very expensive) car. If they do in fact need one, they realize the dog and pony show at the dealership isn’t at all a necessity. New paradigm = let the old one die off.

I'd love to be able to order online and get JUST what I want - not a stupid package that includes crap like a moonroof. You'd think that paying a lot for an "upgraded" audio system they'd put in decent speakers but nope - you can get the stock crappy speakers or pay $1500 for the slightly less irritating audio system. The last issue is the sleazy sales people - can you imagine if you went to the grocery story and they said oh if you don't finance, we'll raise the price you pay. Oh here is your receipt for your groceries $600 for the "documentation fee" we charge everyone.

The only way the market pre-Covid can remain in place is a glut of inventory and lower interest rates. With manufacturers pulling back on production while interest rates are high, the slimming down will continue. Reminds be of the early 80's when the rates were high, the auto industry had a mini-collapse then as well.

First off, you couldn't give me an EV or hybrid. I can state with absolute certainty that my name will never grace the title of either. That being said, it won't grace the title of any new gas/diesel vehicle either. Ugly as sin, overpriced, and overly complex hence more failure prone and expensive to repair. As for dealers, they have shamelessly attempted to screw people at every turn and in doing so have screwed themselves. I have no sympathy at all for modern auto industry at any level. From auto manufacturers to dealers, to parts stores and aftermarket suppliers that sell nearly worthless crap parts.
