Dealers Pay Techs to Rush!!!

Dealers in the US pay with something called "flat rate." This means they pay you a flat rate to do a job whether you do it faster or slower than a preset time. This system is terrible for the customer and stressful for the technician. Today we go over why this is the case with a little bit of evidence from Ferrari technicians.

Indeed. Had my subie at the dealer for routine service which included tire rotation. Would do everything myself but it's under warranty and want no excuses about service intervals. Got back home to find a lug nut not on all the way. It was stripped. Nut & stud needed replaced. They did cover it thankfully.

Flat Rate is a joke. Only way flat rate would make sense is if techs were paid 50% of hourly rate. $200 per hour would be $100 per hour for the tech. That way the technician would actually care about the work he is doing and the situation you described it would not happen. Nowadays with all data quoting ridiculously low labor times for somewhat complex jobs such as a rear main seal on a 63 AMG Mercedes at six hours is a joke. That job should pay at least 8 to 9 hours.

That's ridiculous. With times like that, techs won't tap bolt holes, won't apply the proper antiseize or loctite, or dielectric greases. Wire clamps won't be put back completely or wire clamps replaced. Or pop tabs that break. Or proper oil start up proceedures. I have Xentry here and it takes almost 20 minutes just to do a full quick test and doing that twice plus putting it on the lift, two test drives (before, after) and clean up is already 4 hours.

@@HollywoodMechanic yeah xentry is slow AF. Even slower on DAS older Mercedes.
