Be very careful driving your turbo Ferrari! Sudden and Catastrophic Brake loss is possible. New lawsuit alleges Ferrari knew about the problem and tried cheap inadequate fix that put lives at risk.

I learned so much from this video, insanely underrated video. I'm disappointed to learn Ferrari doesn't take responsibility of their mistakes and just ignores it, placing blame on customers. I look up to them as a brand and I like the way the present themselves as a brand of excellence. I would be nice if they admitted when they are wrong and fixed there mistakes

I know. The PTU is an excellent example of how Ferrari just doesn't care at all about their mistakes. Still using the same unit in 2 more vehicles and they can't even get the original model, the FF, to go more than 15000 miles without breaking

Most cars use expanding bellows in the resivour cap to prevent outside air and moisture to contaminate the brake fluid.

doesn't explain 430 failures. there is a yt video of 430 brake failure on track i think

apparently it works like this brake fluid gets hot and expands and increases in pressure old cap had a strong seal and the fluid would make it's way out the weakest point in the system which apparently was at the master cylinder/booster junction (or in the brake booster itself) new cap allows this pressure to vent and thus the brake fluid wouldn't make it's way past the weakest seals in the system. kinda a bodge fix .... instead of replacing the brake booster/master cylinder they're just like ok we'll give you a worse seal at the reservoir cap and set the low brake fluid light to turn on much much earlier. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pae6dH9oorR-a8k I'm not sure I buy the explanation that it's because brake fluid gets hot and expands and increases pressure ... like how much pressure could that possibly be ? Even if it was 'high' in the laymans sense .... it cant possibly be as high as when I slam on the brakes with my foot. So the fact that our cars are not all immediately yeeting into the weeds the first time we step on the brakes implies that this is simply a case of the master cylinder/booster being out of spec time bombs .... which means the reservoir cap and brake light sensor recode is BARELY a bandaid solution, the only real thing to do is replace the brake booster/master cylinder with a unit that doesn't have these leaky seals

Attached link mentions a bunch of NA models as well, not just models with a turbo engine. Perhaps the issue is more complicated ?

How many 458s have you heard of this problem with complete brake loss? I never have and I've worked on literally hundreds and they've been around for 15 years. I know of 2 488s in the past 2 months to lose all brake pressure. I think they didn't know what the problem was. Initially, they didn't include the 458 or 488 in the first recall. I think the california t and the gtc turbo were the ones with the problems and those aren't the marquee cars that draw attention. I think it's the turbo vacuum pump system that's causing the issue. My source said the booster is where the fluid went.

As in, not leaking from the master cylinder to the engine bay to cause fires, this would be contained in the booster which is air tight on the vacuum side. I don't think ferrari paid enough attention to the problem and that's why they didn't recall the 458 or 488. And they added them later. I think you'll see the turbo models get a brake system update that the other models don't because it'll be way more expensive than just a cap and Ferrari will try to cut the costs down. They will actually figure the problem out and I bet it's the vacuum pump system to blame

the more this is talked about the more HOPEFULLY they will address this sooner then later . why not a pressure/vacuum release check valve. wtf . sounds too easy. the Deferred MAINTENANCE could be a defense line they will use . NO WAY you want to be driving these cars with black looking brake fluid . some customers know more isn't a good thing either . it doesn't take long for that to happen. in my state I see the cap replacement is on the DL . I will be looking to see if there is any fluid in the booster or lines going forward. I dont want a customer that runs Daytona or Sebring have any fubar with brakes .THANKS for stepping up "hollywood" . forza hollywoodmechanic . frankie @ forzamotorcars clearwater FL . btw my DCT's dont come back LMFAO. been smh about the rotors as well.

@@HollywoodMechanic No idea. I have a sample size of 1 and luckily I haven't had any issues with my 458 Spider. What do you suggest in regards to permanently fixing the issue ?

So how is the vacuum system different on a Bmw or Porsche?
@DominicLeung87

kzbin.info/www/bejne/pae6dH9oorR-a8k So apparently brake fluid gets hot, expands and increases in pressure ....old cap didnt allow this pressure to vent so the fluid would leak out the point of least resistance (which was at the master cylinder/booster junction or in the booster itself). New cap allows the pressure to vent easier (crappier seal to the environment) instead of addressing the weak seals in situ Ultimate bodge fix lol I'm not sure I buy this explanation either because .... how much pressure could possibly be generated by expanding brake fluid from high temps .... like even if it was material in 'laymans terms' ... it cant possibly be as high pressure as me physically stepping on the brakes because if the pressure increase was indeed comprable to regular braking pressure ... then the pistons would clamp down on the rotors right ? So if high brake temps causing pressure increases via fluid expansion can't possibly be as high pressure as regular braking forces ... then the amount of fluid lost to this pressure forcing fluid past seals somewhere in the system would be negligible compared to fluid lost under the same mechanism under regular brake actuation. It seems like there's just some bad brake boosters/master cylinders ... somewhere ... some batch ... etc. and replacing those is the actual only proper solution but across 23,000 cars that's expensive. The reservoir cap is in that case a red herring. A distraction to give a somewhat plausible face value explanation which is in fact completely irrelevant and the goal/fix of the recall is actually the reprograming of the brake fluid capacity sensor to throw a warning light at 90% full instead of the 48%. It would look optically quite bad if the fix/recall was ONLY a software reset of when the light turns on as it would look OBVIOUSLY like an attempt to implement a bandaid fix instead of the expensive part replacement. Changing out a cap which probably cost just a few bux was a good (financial) compromise that allowed maranello to save face. The cap won't do dick but the warning light would flag much earlier thus hopefully sending these cars back to service before enough fluid is lost to actually be a safety concern. I would imagine that the first cars that get sent back to service with this light on post recall work would immediately have a booster/master cylinder replacement be recommended. Anyways that's my two cents with my tinfoil hat on .... did i just get banned from buying a new ferrari from the factory ?
