Luckily I've learned to work on most things myself but there are some good local shops I trust, if I couldn't.

Yep. I just accepted a flat rate at a corporate brand. Based off my personality and work ethic (i.e., being ethical and thorough) is how I might have screwed myself. For flat rate tend to cut corners to maximize their time. Smh. I swear I wish shops like your own were in my area. My area is strictly hourly vs flat rate. The hourly rate techs (i.e., GS's) tend to NOT do advanced jobs but maintenance jobs (i.e., oil changes, tire rotations, inspections, etc). F**k I wish I worked at your shop. Salary + Love of cars? Heaven. 💁🏾‍♂️

I have only ever charged purely based on what im fixing my rate is flat my time is the cost if it takes me 10 mins or 10 hours i charge the same most people cant afford regular mechanics or flag hours which are intended to get more money for simple fixes

Hey dealership tech here. If you wanted to say you’re scared of flat rate you should’ve just said that lol.

@@4REtech I pay my ferrari tech $150k a year. He left the dealer after 20 years to work here. First time in his life he's working without flat rate pressure, and I supply his tools for him. And he has AC. And I'm still cheaper than the dealer. Dealers are dying. You don't even train your techs properly. When you going to start doing oil analysis on every oil change instead of waiting for a sound before you do it? When you going to start fixing ptus instead of putting the same flawed units back in? See, the fact that a dealer is so bothered by my posts that you're taking the time to comment, shows who's really scared.

@@4REtech oh your just a tech from the dealer. Bro, the dealer doesn't train you to do basic work. You're a parts changer. You're so dependent on being spoon fed your diagnostics, that you can't leave the dealer. Your creativity is destroyed at a dealer. That's why I'm so successful. I can look at a system and tell you where ferrari messed up the ptu and getrag messed up the dct and all the service items the dealers not doing like intake valve and piston chamber carbon clean spray should be done at every oil change with a direct injection motor. It eliminates the need for walnut blast and most injector failures. But you don't know that because you've never worked on a 10 year old direct injection motor and if you do, the dealer is telling you have to walnut blast. The dealer is literally the laughing stock of race teams and True mechanical engineers. Reactive not proactive

@@HollywoodMechanic bro is off in another planet comparing the dealer to race teams. Those should be two separate entities no one tracks there car they just look at them quit crying.

@@4REtech keep watching. I guess we can connect again in a couple years and see which of us had the best success. Me at my shop or you at the dealer

What you pay your tech isn’t really relevant. What you charge your client is. Do you charge actual time, book time, or a flat rate?

The video isn't about WHAT he pays his techs, it's about HOW he pays his techs. And it's absolutely relevant because it defines the motive of the tech working on your car. I'd much rather the job be done correctly than be done quickly. My guess is that most people with quarter million dollar cars would agree.

This means you're making a killing off technicians

I pay my technicians $150k a year. About 50 percent more than the dealer. And if they take longer than book time, I lose money that the dealer wouldn't. I don't make a killing off technicians. The dealerships do.

@@HollywoodMechanic do you ever bring on apprentices after they finish a program at a trade school or community college? I wouldn't expect $150K obvious without having a decade of experience already, but if you're actually doing things the scientific (truly correct customer focused) way, then it seems like your shop would be the place to learn at entering the automotive industry. Secondly, have you ever considered opening up a shop in the SF Bay Area as there are a lot of people that own super cars there as well?
