It's hard to understand someone with depression. I've been depressed to the point where I locked myself in my room for months, only coming out to eat and when I ate, I over ate like hell. I felt like I lost my purpose in my life and no matter how hard I tried to get back up, I'll fall back in the same routine. Before my depression, I was 160 lbs and was very active. Lately, I've been doing better but, it's hard man. I'm currently morbidly obese and trying to get back on track. I know I can do it, but it's just gonna take time.

I agree that these days there are alot of people who are throwing the word depressed around a lot. I know people who get an exam mark back and are like oh I'm not happy with my mark im depressed now. like no you are not depressed you are sad. There's a difference. One thing I don't agree with is when they said you have to go through something traumatic to have cripping anxiety / social anxiety. I've had it since I was 5 years old and just didn't know what it was. I just remember having the stomach-turning nervous feeling every single day of my life when I woke up, and had the feeling of needing to spew. I had it from 5 years old - 18 years old without knowing what that feeling was because I was not educated in that topic. It has only started to change recently after knowing what my issue was and I'm starting to get help with medication as well. I'm still struggling with it though, and it has stopped me from doing a lot of the things I want to do, unfortunately. However, it is getting better slowly.

I think it's gotten to the point where a lot of people are misdiagnosing themselves with a mental disorder now. I have talked to a lot of people and they talk about anxiety in situations where it's normal to have anxiety. I'm not diminishing their anxiety at all, but there are many cases where anxiety is normal (ie, before a test, the day of a show, waiting for college acceptance letters, etc).It feels as though people are just classifying any feeling of anxiety as having an anxiety disorder. Meanwhile a person has an anxiety disorder when it hinders and affects their everyday lives. I think it's important for people to recognize what they're going through and then go to a professional to see whether or not it's actually just a normal level of anxiety or if it's something more. This goes with depression and many other mental disorders as well.

except why are YOU assuming they are wrong about what they are going through? maybe to your "anxiety before a test is normal"---- but to them their anxiety keeps them up all night and is so bad they cant recall answers to the test. your automatic dismissal of their feelings has more to do with you not wanting to hear about others' pain than anything else. because why would it affect you either way if a person in your life has severe depression versus seasonal depression? your insistence on minimizing others' pain is YOUR issue, not theirs. all they are doing is trying to open up and share their reality with you. also, depression is a gray scale- not black and white. and YOU arent the person to judge someone else and say they are on it or not.
@rechang1015 жыл бұрын
@@sydandtaytum I'm not assuming anything? I literally said it's important for people to recognize what they have, to see how it affects their lives and see a professional about it. However, misdiagnosing and self-diagnosing themselves is harmful to themselves and demotes those who actually are going through more serious issues. There are normal day to day anxiety that does not equal to having an anxiety disorder. I have witness normal "nervousness" or normal levels of anxiety (which we all have and need to have for our everyday safety) be called as having an actual disorder. I understand that there are levels of anxiety and depression. I have been depressed but I wouldnt say I have depression because one, im not clinically diagnosed, two it doesn't affect my day to day life for a long period of time. The problem with self diagnosing, especially when speaking to those who may actually have that disorder is now people try to relate to bigger problems and give unsolicited advice that doesn't actually help anybody.

i hate david talking on depression cause he really doesnt know wtf he is talking about. joe is much closer, but still doesnt quite hit the point- it is a grey scale. it isn't black and white. so someone who has depression can absolutely be functional in the outside world but completely dysfunctional at home. this is me. i can go to work and no one would see that anything is wrong with me. but at home, i have so much struggle doing everyday tasks. this can be worse some days and better other days. there are days i get up to leave the house and just can't. it isn't 'being lazy' or 'making an excuse' like david is suggesting. what he sees as someoen being lazy may just be that person has low self esteem and doesnt feel like they can complete that simple task...even if it is taking out the trash. david also (years ago on jk news) was making fun of his friend's to-do list cause on it was stuff like 'wash face, brush teeth' and 'take out trash.'------- i still remember that moment to this day because on days i have trouble getting out of bed, that is the kind of to-do list i have to make. it doesnt make me lazy or a bad person. it at least means i am trying. so david- my point is, please stop talking about this topic u know nothing about. telling people they dont have depression is one of the worst things u can do. u are not inside their mind. having depression can present like being a functioning alcoholic- u only see them in their 'functioning' times, not in the times when they are alone and really struggling.
@lin06475 жыл бұрын
As someone with depression, I do not mind him talking about this. In the video, joe says that it is a spectrum and David agrees. David seems to be very open to learning (rabbit hole and from talking to joe) and im sure that if he is wrong then he would want someone to tell him. There is a stigma around mental health and we need people talk about this more. If we silenced everyone who is "wrong" instead of listening and educating then we can not expect things to get better. We don't have the answers to everything around mental health, thats why we need to talk about it and raise awareness. Within depression there is range of severity and many subtypes too. There is such thing as high functioning depression and I'd like to thank you for sharing. Initially, I was diagnosed with SAD (seasonal affective disorder, subtype of major depression).

sydandtaytum Tbh too many people think they have depression though. Either that or even suggestion that a cure for depression is just a change in perspective really triggers people. The cure isn’t for other people to feel sorry for you and accompany you
@sydandtaytum5 жыл бұрын
@@Laura-Yu i wish there was a cure. i've lived with it my whole life. i'm in my 30s now. i dont think there is. i think there is just 'better' and 'worse'- it is a chemical imbalance in the brain. i have tried exercising daily, getting sun daily, vitamins, changing diet to eat clean, marijuana, cbd oil, and i go to therapy weekly...all of it but prescription pills. the only reason i havent tried pills is because pills only work for 30% of people...and even then, their body builds a dependency and often times they have to switch to another medication or add another medication. your attitude of 'too many people think they have depression'---- is already really condescending. you are automatically saying that a lot of these people dont have depression. but HOW WOULD YOU KNOW? do you live in their brain? do you wake up in their fog or social anxiety or ptsd or whatever it is? NO. you see them when they are putting on their best face for YOU because there is social stigma behind being vulnerable and talking about not feeling well. and no, nobody but a psychopaths want others to feel sorry for them. and 'accompany you'--- i dont even know wtf that is supposed to mean. all i gathered from your comment is that you don't know shit.
@lin06475 жыл бұрын
sydandtaytum agreed (mostly). I’ve taken meds before and they were not favorable but it did its job. They helped but I wouldn’t take them again so I’m glad you did your research and came to that conclusion. I think the whole problem with “too many people have depression” and “you can’t tell me I don’t have depression” is communication, language, and understanding. Since we don’t talk about our feeling and don’t talk about mental health a lot, we lack the ability to communicate with others the complexity of our state of being or emotions. Depressed is an emotion and it can be used to describe how you are feeling but it is also a mental illness. So the interesting thing is, you can feel depressed, without having the illness. However, it’s hard sometimes to use depressed to describe an emotion or mood if you don’t have the illness because the word depression brings such a heavy and serious air (I am not implying that it isn’t serious. Depression, the illness, IS serious and depressed, the emotion, is important as well). Our brains try to rationalize everything and categorize. It hates the unknown and grey space. BASICALLY, depression is a spectrum and even if some of us understand that, it can be hard to pinpoint the location and describe it.

I love your guys’ discussion on depression. A few clarifications though. Clinical depression is an actual medical condition, which causes your brain to produce imbalanced chemicals, causing your body to experience depression and/or anxiety for no reason whatsoever. This is what I have. Chronic depression is what Joe was talking about, when it’s something that gets so bad that it impedes on your ability to live, but is not a medical condition.
@rileylovebucket60805 жыл бұрын
This is actually not true at all. There are three pillars of mental health: biology, physical health, social circumstances. They are all dependant on each other, so damaging one damages the others. It's really, really fucking rare for depression to be caused only by chemical imbalances, for no reason, and if it's purely medical it cannot be diagnosed as clinical depression. If you look in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders) for the diagnostic criteria for clinical depression, nowhere does it say "chemical inbalance." It gives you a laundry list of physical, mental and behavioral symptoms you have to have for at least 2 weeks. Chemical imbalances do not cause depression; this is a myth that has been perpetuated through the years. Depression causes chemical imbalances.

i'd glad joe is there to explain depression to david. it is SO FUCKING condescending to tell someone they do not have depression when they do. that is some psych 101 shit not to do. u are not inside someone else's mind. u do not know how hard it is for someone to get out bed that morning, or get dressed, or leave the house--- for some people this is crippling EVERY DAY. and they do it anyway, and when they see u later that day, they seem completely 'normal'---- but u dont understand how hard it was for them to do that. also, the idea that depression is something u can 'get over'----- it is a brain chemical imbalance. i have tried my whole life to 'get over' it--- i worked out daily, even twice a days at one point. i got sun, i took vitamins, i read psychology books, i go to therapy (even today)---- i haven't 'gotten over' it yet. it is very possible this is just how my brain will work the rest of my life. but i try. so dont tell me that because i label myself as having depression that i dont try or that i am lazy. that is absolute bullshit.

Like myself I been always trying to understand why I feel this way for example intrusive thoughts, overthinking or avoiding making mistakes in life. So I myself had to study and research on what I am feeling so I don't make a "End of the rope" life mistake. The issue with most people when talking out a sensitive topic is don't but PRIDE and ANGER in to a conversation that most individuals don't know about but are trying to. Remember we are all human beings and to make the world a wonderful place is to try to understand each other and not let pride cause a mistake to a human being that is living in a storm of uncertainties about how life is changing. To those that have anxiety, Ocd, depression,Pocd, Pure OCD, Harm OCD, social anxiety, sexual OCD and any other disorder. You are important, You needed, You will be ok. The key to conquer you illness is trust yourself and always have faith in yourself. Also remember youtuber going thur this disease too. But remember the anxiety disorder is like a cold or flu it will pass and you are just getting stronger for something more that other can't handle. Don't give up or give in the darkness there is a light. As for Joe Jitsukawa and his past I am grateful that he is well educated and knows about this illness that most are to prideful or scared to get help for. As for David So he is a great person but needs to understand which he does word and things being said are so powerful to others that it can cause a mistake or a life if not used careful in this type of subject. But remember when it comes to someone else opinion the prideful will start to take affect to protect someone's opinion in this great country we live in. Well then you missed the part of the conversation where we talked about how everyone is dealing with something. I don't believe that you should walk around and throw that word around so easily. Levels of depression TO ME could also mean levels of sadness. Depression is real but sadness does not equal depression EVERY TIME to me. From knowing people who are clinically depressed and have an emotion that they can't pin point or dig themselves out of is different to me. When you have a specific reason to why you are depressed that you in your mind know it's temporary to me... Is sadness. The point of the conversation was to pinpoint how Influencers should be careful about the clinic usage of that mental illness so easily. Young people use it as a crutch. They say... Well it's because I'm depressed and leave it to that. Or we can acknowledge the sadness and disappointment and say it's okay to feel this way, talk to people if you can about it, without saying my sadness is completely out of my control. So to me, there's levels to this. It's not just every form of sadness is DEPRESSION. We all go through things and its fucken hard but I can't keep saying everytime I'm sad and when things don't go my way I'm depressed. It's defeating. I'm trying to figure out when feeling disappointment and sadness turned into depression. For me those words are not interchangeable.

I cant remember how it happened but I just remember my older sister kind of caught me in the closet and asked what I was doing. Obviously I said Nothing but I'm sure she knew I mightve been doing something naughty. Super embarrassing

I'm bipolar I've had a brain scan to confirm it - that's not gonna go away with some positive thinking guys

Gumi Megpoid And that’s why you go to a doctor for some treatment, not telling people you are bipolar and expecting them to accompany you. And positive thinking and mindfulness is always part of staying mentally healthy.

@@Laura-Yu ....I did that how I know about the brain scan. I'm saying that my brain is actually different so positive thinking isn''t going to make that change is all

This is garbage. This is supposed to be a discussion about overcoming crippling anxiety and it turns into a discussion about pornography and masturbation which is is a huge contributer to the anxiety problem. No one should listen to this advice if they suffer from anxiety.
