My sister who lives in a suburban neighborhood outside of Mobile AL. The came home from a trip to find all of their ceilings down and their home flooded. Rats had eaten thru the water lines in their attic. It was a mess. Major restoration. Then they came back😱 I know this is a different environment but we started researching. She used a method of exterminating getting rid of them then She mixed up a solution of Clorox and water in a large spray tank. She drenched her yard, porch, any concrete, and about 2 ft up the side of her house. They leave a scent trail with their urin. That is how the kept finding their way back. Also like you said she quit feeding birds etc with seed etc. I don’t know but maybe this will help. I have also heard to pour spice like pepper flakes, etc. It has been over 8 years but fingers crossed they haven’t come back. Good luck. Very stressful

Does someone in your garden club have a livetrap you could borrow? Or maybe you could get together and each put in a dollar or two and buy one that you can take turns uding as needed ? Ive heard they dont like mint so mayn farmers plant mint around their houses. Dk if it works but Id try some mint in small pots so it doesnt take over and you can move them around in different small spaces each time you go to the plot to help confuse them and make it uncomfortable. Dachsunds are born to chase rats and snakes and such burrowing creatures. Maybe find someone with one thst can bring it to visit in thd garden chasing an running around for a short time but not pooping? definitely encourage neighbor alley cats.

I use the old triedand true large Victor snap traps. I get 10 of them laid out. When I get them, I bury them nourish the soil , let them give back what they take. I've yet to tackle the squirrels that eat even more of my tomatoes and fruit. Soon though.

Hi Mari. I hear the frustrations and sadness in your voice. I hope you’re able to find some sort of solution to this problem. You’ve invested too much at the plot for these rats to destroy. Praying for a speedy resolution 🙏🏾🙏🏾

It may be a good idea to invest in Epic Gardening Birdie Beds. It would give height to your garden. ❤

Unfortunately I don’t own the plot and I can’t really add any structures in there. But those look really cool!

What are the plot owners doing? With rats that big you would think they are trying to get into the house.They have strong teeth and dont give up.I knew they were coming back especially if they have breed there. That dumpster behing that plot is the culprit as well.I know you cant do anything about a lot of those things like you said.

The plot is attached to an apartment building, and the owner doesn’t live there, just owns it. But I don’t think they go inside since a lot of the food is on the streets.

You can still ask him. He is close by, so couldn't he also be affected by the rat infestation at some point? I know some neighbors can be difficult to deal with; but if you at least ask him, there are two possible answers: yes or no. Nothing to lose and everything to gain.

He’s not very close actually, he lives closer to where I live and have a my backyard. The plot is a bit of a walk further down, but he owns the building. I just think it would be good for the cats to be just left there

This is at the plot she doesn't own that.The neighbors let her use it.Plus, it's fenced in, but cats can jump over the fence( usually) .

This may sound crazy. But can you make room for a couple of cats to live on your plot?
@MarisGardenandKitchen

I can’t because the plot is not mine :/ I don’t think my neighbor (the owner) would be ok with it 😞 But I definitely thought about it!

@@MarisGardenandKitchen One more thing. If you go back to your video where you discover this year's infestation, so many commenters say cats are the best and most effective strategy.

@@ECole-le7we Yes! I actually have alley cats that visit my backyard and I have never seen a rat here, thankfully!! But I really don’t think my neighbor would be ok with me keeping cats there in a gated area 😅 Specially because we rent here in NY, and I’m just taking care of the space for now. What will happen if we move? The cats live for several years, we can’t just do that to them
