The latest 2022 releases of Bachmann's Class 47 have arrived at Dean Park Model Railway. 'Greyfriars Bobby', Kernow Exclusive 'Billingham Enterprise' and a BR Blue machine all feature in this video. I will give an unbias honest review of this new trio of Class 47 model, that have arrived at Dean Park. As I am not paid by Bachmann or any manufacturers. Something you wont find in many model rail publications these days!

Slowly catching up with some of your videos Dave and yes, another great review . As for the best livery out of these three, for me it is the Large Logo Blue , just pips the Redstripe by a whisker but, nice to see one in that livery , i shall wait for a general release version though, as even with my huge wallet lol £370 is tad too high; i can buy a box of tea bags and bag of pasta for that ....😆

Great piece of graphic design the 'Greyfriars Bobby' version. Dividing the loco up into five distinct pieces in effect ( that includes the black underbody ) . The giant logo, large numbers. This - the real thing of course - really has been designed. And thank you for reminding us of that wonderful story too.

Great video and great layout Dave - Class 47 along with 86-87 and the HST ( which I only travelled on prior to them being withdrawn) were my favourites growing up and travelling (not on HST) between S/Coast to Preston (Via BR Glasgow / Edinburgh XC) service in late 70's - mid 80's. My favorite livery is still the intercity Swallow livery and manage to save up (B/day treat) to buy the Bachmann's excellent detailed model (Analogue ). Unfortunately with model prices being expensive and being full time carer for my mum have less chance in affording these models now - especially £200+ a pop for a loco, £45+ for coach, etc

But then 47363 came next and changed my mind. 47363 is mind blowing in that stunning railfreight livery. I have a hornby 56 in the same livery and absolutely love it, but 47363 has the edge. Yep, there's my vote. 47363. It might be expensive, but it's truly stunning. I do enjoy your reviews Dave and this no exception. Best regards, Lee

Hi, nice review, although I thought I would pick up on a couple of things if I may, for info, not for criticism. You mention 363 working passenger trains in Scotland in Railfreight which indeed it did, it spent a couple of days on the Edinburgh-Dundee circuit in August 86, but without the red stripe. However it did go 'up your way' regularly as one of it's primary duties was to work 6S41/6E74 Havertol Hill - Leith ICI Amonia tanks. I notice you also mentioned 'sealed beam' headlights on the marker panels of the loco. This loco was one of the engines which was fitted with marker lights at both ends and never had sealed beams in headcode panels. You mentioned the Lima model and a little story about that for you... I own the pre-production model of it on which they got the colour of the roof correct, as you may be aware on the production models they got the roof completely the wrong colour. Probably because of the way the light shone of it in photographs. Finally I heard you mention the movement of the ETH boxes on some locos from 'above the beam' to beneath it. Although this was done on a couple of locos later in life because they needed them replacing, in the vast majority of cases it was to do with the locomotives being fitted with snowploughs. If you look at the 'above the beam' ETH boxes you will notice that the cable leaves the locomotive from a box located under the bufferbeam, in order to fit snowploughs this needed to be moved and the replacement modern boxes had both of the 'boxes' associated with the ETH connection located on the bufferbeam itself. That is why you will never find a snow-plough fitted class 47 with an 'above the beam' ETH box. Something Heljan should have taken more notice off. I hope this is helpful to someone. Keep up the good work, always a pleasure to watch you videos.
@locohauledforum
@locohauledforum Жыл бұрын
I can't seem to edit this as the button just freezes my internet... But I meant to write - sealed beam' headlights on the headcode panels. Probably also worth mentioning that of course locos 47586-665 had below the beam ETH boxes on ETH conversion.

Great triple overview of these new Bachmann 47s Dave, as I have said before I think the new bachmann 47s are probably some of the best diesel locomotives we can get these days, bachmann should be commended for taking on a project like this, if you ask me I think there has been far too much criticism of these models and some of the criticism that this model has received is I think it is undeserved and in some cases stupid, the main one I have heard is the sound but it has to be remembered that sound locomotives can sound different in person compared to on a video, overall a good overview of these models Dave, it will be interesting to see the other liveries that bachmann do in the future, if any of them appeal to me then one of these new 47s may join my fleet, also can’t believe it’s already been a year since these models were first released.

711 for me Dave, one of the best liveries produced by BR, the other stand out livery for me was the Dutch engineers! I worked at Parkeston Quay for Railfreight Distribution and saw all the 90's in the continental liveries, they were as such OK, as models they would bound to make a killing (in price) for Bachmann, but for me naught special. As for pricing just paid £100 for a Hornby class 153 in Northern livery, even used prices are still expensive!

The Hornby 153 in Northern Rail livery is a rare beast. It’s a shame there was only one run of this livery. Never understood why Hornby did two runs of the FNW blue and gold with white Northern transition fleetnames. Even the second run of the Regional Railways livery was sadly compromised.

3 superb examples of the Class 47 workshops. My preference of the 3 has to be 47435. I always struggled to be accepting of BR’s large logo across various individual fleet members. It never personally looked right for me, the only exception being 86235 (Novelty) when it was in its Rocket150 livery (1980/81).

Just before Christmas I got my 47711 from TMC and always a bit of a worry for imperfections especially on intercontinental shipping. However thankfully this was NOT the case ! It is the 35-415SF without the "X" and I choose for the High Gloss Finish rather than the special glazing with rotating fans. TMC also put a Driver in it and TMC also went to great lengths fitting bufferbeam details even at the end where the NEM Coupling is ! My only other 47404 is the "Hadrian" and there are differences between those two, and I like both 😄 Happy New Year to you, Jan, Australia

A question probably already asked, is it worth the extra cost between the Sound Fitted and Sound Fitted Deluxe? Out of the three 47 435 is my preferred because it’s just a anonymous loco, which for the period could be seen in most places on the network hauling passenger, parcels, freight and departmental trains. Although for the late 80s period it would really need a sealed beam headlight. Maybe one day Bachmann might model this version with some of the unofficial Tinsley depot names from that period.

Without doubt these are fine models but you make the very valid point about the cost as even if you don't go for the deluxe edition they are still expensive. I have just purchased a used as new Bachmann 47 DCC fitted but the previous tooling for £129. I feel a bit sorry for these manufacturers because unlike forty years ago where every kid had a trainset now they have an X-box and we as modlers are demanding ever increasing detail, features and quality of finish, add to that as you say global economic pressures and you can see why prices have shot up over the last two of three years. I do find myself increasingly trawling the box shifters websites looking for used as new examples of the models I want with new purchases reserved for Christmas and birthdays. All that said thus looks like a fantastic model and well done Bachmann.

Fabulous review Dave I've got one of the previous Bachmann class 47s along with two freightliner 57s perchesed from hattons around 2010 these are Fabulous models but why did Bachmann change their packaging to plastic rather than the polystyrene cradle which usually had a small bag of accessories such as cab areals which were probably better protected in transit.
@DeanPark
@DeanPark Жыл бұрын
They have used the plastic ‘ice cube’ style for years, it can be recycled probably compared to the expanded polystyrene. The polystyrene could also run on the models. There is nothing wrong with the ice cube usually, but some of the 47’s with aerials have been damaged as the padding inside has been poorly thought out or placed.

Those in their younger years aren't the ones actually buying though, their parents are, those in their younger years are therefore not priced out, their parents might be, but equally their parents might be not at all keen to invest into the hobby on behalf of their kids because they probably take a look at the products, and the overwhelmingly negative coverage given to them on the easiest place to look, youtube, and decide they'd rather spend money on something their kid isn't going to have issues with, regardless of weather the model their kid may have got actually has issues. Put yourself in the shoes of a parent coming to look for advice on what to buy your kid to get them in, bombarded by talk of how expensive it is, how bad the quality is, how it's a fools game to buy these things. You'd walk. It's also a sad fact that some companies get an easier time and get savings they get to pass to consumers that more established players do not. You won't hear it mentioned but there is a government policy impacting the pricing of models.
@mytinplaterailway
@mytinplaterailway Жыл бұрын
@@trainskitsetc What is that? ( Policy ).
@trainskitsetc
@trainskitsetc Жыл бұрын
@@mytinplaterailway the policy that lessens tax burdens on capital investment under certain conditions not met by all manufacturers but met by others. This, once you pass that tax cut to the end customer, allows the company to present a lower priced model to market which enables them to look much more competitive than they really are, a great bonus in a market place. In a market place where buying a new model is an unnattractive option for many you can make your model attractive and build brand loyalty going forward by passing down the tax break you get, you either make a short term gain taking the tax break for yourself or use it to gain market share by passing it on. But one of a number of reasons these newer companies are able to offer lower prices, one of many, but we don't enjoy boring economics we'd rather spew our guts over prices. We being the hobby at large. Exceptions always apply and you are one for asking! One day this policy will be wound back, and then watch the price go up for these as well or they simply drop out the market. Add into this as well that these larger manufacturers have for better or worse been exposed through their multiple ranges to the heightened costs of business with the continent causing either operational cost increase or costs of rearranging operations neither of which is good for business and will result in a price rise or the company themself soaking up the costs at risk to their ability to access capital should they need it depending on how the market for their product moves of course made all the more difficult to negotiate by the above policy allowing new players to come in and undercut the established ones all largely thanks to an entirely ideologically led approach to the environment in which the companies operate. Then add in different companies expectations going forward, if your intention is to get in and make a quick buck you can save an awful lot of up front cost on tooling simply by changing the material your dies are made from at the expense of longevity of production as machining cost=both complexity of the mold but also the material you are machining which can add hours upon hours of expensive time in the machibe shop. The bigger players tend to opt for more expensive tooling and produce in greater numbers over greater time scales. The smaller players like to pump out a batch or two then you may never see that model again but its served purpose it's enabled you to build market share while minimising cost and appearing nicely competitive plus you still have the CAD should economic conditions change in favour of you making those more expensive toolings that you can then use long term or you can simply sell the CAD and any useful life left in the cheaper toolings to someone as tou exist the business, they also tend to be very open to subcontract work for model shop exclusives etc again here today gone tomorrow offerings but all activity on the balance sheet Sorry for boring you to death if you actually read all of that. But that's what's really at play

great in cress to the fleet. 47711 would be my choice but we are working in N gauge. Stay safe.

Personnally my favourite is the BR blue 47-4xx with no idiot light, the high intensity lights spoiiled the look of all BR diesals in my opnion & I never liked the large logo livery either & when BR got some good deals on drums of different paint colours well thats another story

It did have a cleaner look to it! But for modelling my main era one with a light would be helpful :-)

A nice review but if 1 star is terrible and 5 stars is excellent then presumably 3 stars for "value for money" is okay! Dave, really?

Yes as you are getting a lot of tech for your money. It’s sound fitted. If you look at a non sound fitted hornby class 60… £218., £200 (retail)For a 15 year old tooling with a lot less detail and technology. If you look at the all new sound Heljan 47…£331 (retail). Bachmann 47 sound… £288 (retail) A retail deluxe 47 greyfriars Bobby was £330 retail. so actually cheaper than the standard sound Heljan. As it was the deluxe trim I was reviewing they are better value than the Heljan. So in terms of competitors… it’s actually better value. Ok accurascale can give us a sound model for £260ish, but those prices were set pre global meltdown. They even said themselves that prices would have to increase on future models. Therefore.. being in line with bachmann sound fitted locos. If you want the exclusive models, yes it’s a luxury item, and that’s what I explained clearly in my video. So 3 out of 5 is in balance a fair conclusion. With prices of everything going through the roof all companies are hiking prices. What’s not expensive just now?!

@@DeanPark Hi Dave, I appreciate the considered reply and your rationale. My observation is that the main two manufacturers (B and H)....(not the cigarettes!) have been raising their prices in a ludicrous manner, many times above inflation, for at least seven or eight years; which has culminated in raising the base prices for all manufacturers to beyond reasonable by any measure. ALL THE LOCOMOTIVES FROM ALL THE MANUFACTURERS ARE TOO EXPENSIVE, AROUND TWICE THE PRICE THEY SHOULD BE! I fear that people's acceptance of this has led to now comparing over priced models against other over priced models, as in your stated conclusion. Unless we all speak out and even boycott these ridiculous prices they will carry on increasing them and making mugs out of the hobbyists. I feel you and other prominent YTers need to set the tone on this pricing subject and rather than showing insouciant toleration, speak out and send a shot across their bows instead. They take social media seriously! All the best, Julian.

For all the work involved in detailing, they’ve still made mistakes on all three.
