Hi Dave again, glad to hear you will be 'weathering' stock, locos etc. Re your comments of 'muck', 'rubbish' etc being applied later in the TMD and other areas. Can't wait to see the "finished" articles. Just to clear my mention of mucking things up as more realistic comes from my own "profession" before retirement as proprietor of "Moray's Models" trading in model railways and specifically as ' specialists & experts in customising' including renumbering, naming, detailing AND weathering. Good luck with your venture in this field as you say, not something to take on hand with little experience!

Hi Dave With ref to the weathering you were talking about . You could try and start with Tamiya weathering master . Someone showed me it at a local model show a few years ago so I thought I would give it a try .I find this is good to adhere to the stock and if you make a mistake you can wipe it off with a damp rag. I realise with the amount of stock you have it would be impractical to use for it all but you could possibly make a start with this and use this method for light weathering and exhaust smoke and when you master the weathering process you can also touch up with this product. Great informative videos Thanks

Yet another excellent video. I am not sure if you realise how much information you have given me and many others in our hobby. You are so clear and accurate in what you do. Castle, sounds good but not sure if it sits right. A Baronial spread with Scottish turret architecture, now used as an hotel may sit better and of course it would be the 5 star 'Dean Park ' hotel. Loved the welding. Q.1 have you been modeling before you started Dean Park? Q.2 would you ever let fellow modelers visit? Thanks, Barry.Devon.

You've totally nailed those backscenes. They work perfectly and add such depth. Hard to see where the layout ends and the backscene starts. No wonder construction has halted on those new build houses. They're going to be a hard sell, on top of 5 mainline rail tracks. I suspect the construction company have abandoned that project. I don't envisage ever seeing those houses being completed.

I love the idea of a castle.Can I add a suggestion for the BR yard. When I worked on the railway in the 80's we had a yard that was used by the S&T for training. So, they had a set of points and several signals of various types all wired up and working (although not on any running lines) for the new staff to train on. There would be junction boxes, AWS magnets for the newbies to get experience on.I have never seen anything like this being modelled, and might make a little interesting point if you added a group of workers clustered around being shown the way to do it etc.

Here in Canada at Canadian National Railway's training campus I attended to become a train conductor we had something similar, it was very neat. Also, wonderful layout, you've really managed to get a lot into your space without it seeming too forced!

Love the idea of the BR depot with the yellow vehicles it will work quite well to the proximity of the depot. A question on your idea of a mail sorting office have you researched if red star parcels had any large depot with vehicles and trucks as it would tie in nicely with the small one at the terminus but overall a stunning layout for the space

Excellent! ;-) I was expecting to wait a few of days for Part 2. Can I make a suggestion for your very very long retaining wall in front of the TMD? Have you considered investing in a suitable mould and produce as many "panels" as you require in plaster? I know you may require some sections to be removable, but you could always mount them as you have done elsewhere on the layout. Another great update/overview. Keep up the good work.

Hello Dave, regarding weathering I love my locos in "pristine" condition and yours look fine. I expect if you do turn your hand to weathering it will be done perfectly. One further point if you want to sell your loco to a dealer I think you get more if it is in pristine condition, or factory weathered. Cheers, Bill.

Your layout is fab, your attention to detail absolutely amazing, thanks so much for sharing it. One quick question please: you mentioned that some locomotives were struggling on the incline before you fitted the DCC system to them, what gradient is the incline? Cheers
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, my gradient is a 3% Incline kit from woodland scenics. It rises 8 inches over 12ft. You also get a steeper and shallower one....but the 3% fitted in my space. A lot of modellers put the inclines 'off scene' but I wanted to see it, so I could model a cutting/incline. 99% of my trains get up the incline no problem, but 8 coach HST trains and steam locos can start to slip near the top of the incline (as most of the train is on the slope by that point and it creates more and more drag). The incline fits in really well at that end of the layout and adds a bit of interest other than flat tracks all the time. I have a very similar incline at the other end of the layout too....which takes locos from the top level to the fiddle yard and through to the lower section at the station. All locos can go anywhere on the layout without me picking them up. It took a bit of doing as I am contained by loft and the trusses. Hope this helps? Dave
@stediths
@stediths 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave Thanks for the reply. 3% that is quite steep, good to hear that the majority of locos make it OK. On the ones that slip, do they actually make it or stop before they reach to the top? Also the steam loco that slips - what is it, from which manufacturer and how many coaches can it cope with without slipping? This question at the moment is the issue that is preventing me from starting out, as for my track plan to work in the space I have, helixes are needed! Cheers
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 6 жыл бұрын
All make it up with no slipping. Helixes are good, but I wanted to see the locos go up a slope and make it part of the scene. Also, we are all constrained by space aren't we? cheers. Dave

How many coaches can you fit along the station platform. After hogmanay, I’m going to get my spare room cleared out and fitted out for a layout. I was thinking of putting my station behind the door which would give me 6’ to the corner. I would need some room for turning and I’m not sure that 6’ is enough unless the station is on a curve. I’d like to get four coaches at the platform. I measured my four Pullman coaches and loco (Duke of Gloucester”) and it’s 55” long, the coaches being 43” long. I could have the baseboard as a triangle there to enable a curved station? I can envisage making the station canopy as a scratch build because you can’t get transparent canopies in a curve. So a wooden canopy with skylight windows and slates would have to be built. Gosh, I think I’ve talked myself into a more interesting scenario than I first thought about 😀. If I could pull that off, I’d be really chuffed with my layout.
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, the longest platform can fit an 8 coach HST. The other through platforms can fit a 7 car HST, or 9 Mk1 loco hauled. Cheers. Dave
@jazzman1626
@jazzman1626 6 жыл бұрын
DaveClass47 Thanks. It looks like it’ll be a curved platform after all. I came across Scalecast.co.uk which sounds great. The resin walls can be bent if you get them out of their molds just before they fully harden. Or I may just see if card buildings can be adapted.

hi dave , fantastic as always , yep pristine barry coal wagons lol, but on a serious note when you at show pick some old wagon or coaches from junk boxes that some dealers have. . Not so expensive to muck up to practice weathering on, . we lucky at our club we have weathering expert so my pristine network rail loco class 37 yellow and a tamper and new bachmann little 4 wheeler with hiab crane are all being weathered . as we speak, richard even does complete resprays , i need egg collection lorry for my lner layout and we resprayed it a cheep die cast and looks the bees knees and hes renumbered some duplicate tanks. I my self would be frighten and weathered them last work he did for me was to respray the roof of my 2 O gauge gwr coaches and weather the running gear thy look brilliant as one had white roof other gray no thy match and at over £300 pounds each lot money that could get ruin buy bad paint job.

One question Dave how do you get to your layout ?
@ukdieselandelectricrailway1890
@ukdieselandelectricrailway1890 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave I hope you don't mind, but can I draw your attention to a design glitch to your depot.... BR regulations were that a depot, yard, terminal, (etc) not go straight onto a running line where traffic could be moving.... without leading to a headshunt, or at the very least being protected by a catch point. If you look on google earth, you'll see that there is always protection to running lines. Right now, both ends of your depot go straight onto the inclines... so a runaway loco (or vehicle) could pass the points, go down the bank, and slam into anything running. The end near the fuel tank isn't too much of a problem. You could move the tank and insert a left handed curved point for a short headshunt. The opposite end is rather more difficult because if you dropped a right-hand catch point, any derailment for a runaway loco would see it fall down the 'hole'.
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks. I see what you are saying, thanks for the insight. Its all down to space. Fitting another turnout out with motor would be difficult....as when I laid the track originally I had the tmd boards unfitted to the layout....so turnout motor fitting is an issue there. Dave
@ukdieselandelectricrailway1890
@ukdieselandelectricrailway1890 7 жыл бұрын
Consider this.... You haven't ballasted this part yet, so you have time to make a small alteration on your side. Now you know it isn't quite right, it'll niggle away at the back of your mind, and a year from now, you'll wish you'd made the change while you could. The simplest thing to do is add a catch point on the left side of the depot approach to protect from runaways, and either another catch point, or a short headshunt at the right hand side. Other than the time it takes to do the work (to drill new holes and rewire it up), you have the space, but you'll lose some length (about 4 inches) between the points and the depot building. I know it's a lot of palava, but you'll have the reward that you have got it 'right'! :^)
@DeanPark
@DeanPark 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, it would mean lifting the boards which have the mainline attached. as the whole of the TMD is made from 2 large lengths of ply. I will consider it.
@ukdieselandelectricrailway1890
@ukdieselandelectricrailway1890 7 жыл бұрын
Really? Couldn't you just lift the track after the points leading on to the depot, and then drill a 10mm hole big enough for a jigsaw blade so you can cut the rectangle for the point motors? If you pre-wire the point motors, you can drop them in with the wired hanging down so you can connect them to the bus wires and switches. I know it's a drag, and undoes some of the hard work you've already done. By the way, I'm not sure you know who I am.... I'm Cliffjumper24. I assisted on a few of your reviews (the Blue/Grey HST 40th anniversary, and one of your Large Logo 37's), as well as leaving other supportive comments suggesting things here and there, or giving prototype info, such as overhead wires getting higher across level crossings. I just want to say, that I find your videos inspiring. Although I may a deeper knowledge base than you have.... you have created an excellent layout, and you have a fine eye for detail.... better than I've seen at club level. You remind me of myself about 15 years ago, when I was venturing beyond a train set mentality, and creating my first layout. Since then I've been involved in a club... constructing the boards for a fair sized fiddleyard (20ft x 3ft for a 20ft x 13ft layout), laid track, then moved on to the electrics, and got it all running. But you've exceeded my level when it comes to scenery. I'd never got that far on my home layout, and I was too busy (on the electrics) to do much scenery on the club layout. Since then, I've left that club, and I'm on the brink of making a brand new home layout, and your scenery work inpires me. And that's why I started my own channel... because, like you, I want to share the things I've learned, and pass them on to new modellers that might be inspired by my modelling. Actually, I'm hoping I'll inpire a modeller such as yourself, because so far, most of my output has been about modifying rolling stock... and I see almost all your rolling stock is out of the box and onto the layout. Once you've finished your layout, 'playinbg trains' will soon become a bit boring.... so you'll probably want to diversify into detailing, weathering, renumbering & renaming, and onto kit building and maybe even scratchbuilding. So I know I've left a comment that may seem a little disheartening.... please know that I'm not doing this to criticise.... I do it to push your potential, because I can see you have it. Cheers Dave/UK D&E

I can weather buildings, materials and track etc, but as for the locos....I see too many dodgey home made efforts. Even the so called 'professional' weathering companies are not exactly flawless. One day I might get a few weathered. Dave

Can I say the area you want your manicured gardens, make it larger, like a public park. And Call it the Dean Park Gardens :)

How about a fleet video? It may take too long, though, with all those locos.
@DeanPark

It would take so long.....I did a class 47 review a couple of years ago. But with over 40 locos I suspect I would bore the audience to death with a fleet video on all those! lol

Great GREAT fan ... but your run your trains far too fast for realism, don't you?

Hi thanks. I did notice in some earlier vids they were faster than concorde....but I now have them scaled to life like speeds lol.
