Yeah, Julian left the show. But to go "In Universe" here. Remember that this Death is a primordial. Death was a role he undertook, but underneath that, he's an immensely powerful being by himself on par with Chuck and Amara. Remember back in the Pizza Restaurant in Chicago? "I'm old Dean...". Maybe, just maybe he was fed-up. It seems to me that such a being would be supra-intelligent. That being the case; handing Dean Winchester the only weapon in the Universe that can kill him and then threatening his brother was a remarkably dumb thing to do. UNLESS, he wanted Dean to kill him. That was his plan all along. Presumably he would have gone to The Empty where he more than likely would have been powerful enough to wake and leave, then go do whatever he wanted to do, free from the burden of being Death at last. Billie took on the mantle of Death, but that's all she is. Her powers are just ones that come from being a Reaper and having the Death ring, she doesn't have anywhere near the juice of the Original, not even close.

Leviathans in S7 were a very smart and intelligent creatures BUT only under the guidance and leadership of their leader. They think smart and a long term plan. They want to cure all han from all disease just to make us fat and eat us. They even brokering peace and cooperation with Demon and Monsters and share their human livestock to them to use. And even then, they are quite powerful capable of killing regular angels and demons with ease. And no known other means of killing them throughout the season until Sam and Dean came across the Leviathan Tablet. That alone is pretty great concept. BUT, the way they made and stretched the story is bad and that is why we feel that we even didn't get any presence of the Leviathans. Season 6 also had a great concept by putting the spotlight to monster and their origins. BUT after they killed Eve and made Castiel and Crowley the bad guys, i felt it went downhill and underwhelming.

I love this because Cass got angry and arrogant, but Death was just sitting there. He was just existing. Cass, even super juiced, wouldn’t have stood a chance in hell. Death knew it too.
