Only discovered your vids recently and it’s a great watch- I love buying tools cheap at car boot sales and fixing them up - I watch vids like yours on how to fix them and for example I bought a electric chainsaw worth £250 that I got for a tenner and it was a really easy fix - got real bargains on good makes like dewalt and Mikita etc I’ve been collecting cheap tools as I wanted to start a woodworking/laser engraving business and I’ve now got everything I need that would have cost a few grand but I’ve maybe spent £5/600 - I’ve now got it up and running and coming along nicely and that’s down to vids like this - I could never have afforded to set it up with buying things new, keep up the good work it’s great content 👏🏻👍🏻🍻

Thanks again for another round of great and interesting videos. Now, for some trivia! Regarding the big Festool planer at the end, the one you can't buy in Ireland and have to go abroad for, the reason there is a lock is because you can buy several different types of drums and blades for those drums. The current drum on this planer is straight as is the spiral blade. However, you can also buy different shaped drums for shaping the wood, taking small, medium and large chunks out of it that are anything but straight.. I think this planer was originally made by Festo before Festo and Protool merged. From memory, I've seen some blades for these with Festo printed / etched / lasered on them. Seems like they were not worth changing after the merger. Finally, if you're wondering why there's no bearing on the other side, apart from make it easier to change those drums, such a set up allows for an infinite depth of rebate.
@gregdobson6452Ай бұрын
Hello Dean the reason there is a Lock for the HL850, is that there are 4 or 5 Different Plane Heads available for the machine . These different heads enable you to put Apply Different Finishes to the wood. There are fine and course finish and the Standard Smooth Finish

Ahh I love these videos. And powertools. Gives me the confidence to look on ebay for used and defective tools mainly Makita, Metabo and Bosch Professional because those I can get parts for fairly easy. Already revived an old Metabo drill, a good one at that: 2 speed all metal gearbox, one of the first with speed control so it has a wheel up top where you select your speed and its more advanced then I thought for such an ancient drill (its made in the mid to late 80s) its actually an active speed control so it keeps he drill at a constant RPM by adding power under load. The chuck is a work of art compared to most modern drills, all steel, butter smooth, zero runout and I dont think its the original one. Great machine, powerful, smooth, made to last. Only needed a clean, a new powercord and gearbox washout and regrease.

The drum for the blades are perfectly balanced at the factory for those Festool planers. The big one has 3 different shaped drums for shaping timber. They are changable parts and the blades are shaped to the drum. The makita dry wall screw gun repair was the best. 😂 I bet that forward/reverse button got knocked during transport to another job.

My Festools are the only tools I own that run for hours on end (sanders, vacs, and routers) and yet they’re some of the only tools I can’t kill. It’s weird because there’s nothing special about the build quality under the hood. Can’t kill my Mafell stuff either, which, as you’ve noted before, certainly aren’t special under the hood. I presume a lot of it is environmental. The Fein stuff lasts, but you’d expect it looking inside of them (they’re loaded with wago lever nuts now, the wiring is straight up building wire gauge).

You can't buy that 850 Festool planer in Ireland, only the smaller 650. You can of course buy it overseas online and for a much better price that if you could in Ireland. Same with anything Festool or Mafell. Thanks for the videos.

I’m no repairman, butI’ve fixed a few of my friend’s Makita impacts and it was always the controller. Everything on them is the best you can get and built very well (no friction fit bs on the hammer/gear case like a Milwaukee impact). You have to kill them with moisture. Zap. ⚡️

why so much 110volt tools in ireland? are the grids also in 110v?
@Matt-ns2tyАй бұрын
Jobsites safety requirements I think
@callumBeeАй бұрын
Ireland is 230v at the sockets. Before battery tools were actually useful building sites used 110v isolated supplies as its was much safer as the way the transformer is setup a the earth point on the secondary side is the at the centre point of the output so a Live to earth connection will only be 55V which is far far safer to get a whack off and less likely to kill vs 110v or 230v directly.
@therabman_5606Ай бұрын
If your a diyer you can have 230v tools, if your on sites you have to use 110v due to health and safety requirements. It’s incase you cut the cord or something and get electrocuted as 110v can not kill you while 230v can
@zaxmaxlaxАй бұрын
@@therabman_5606110v can kill you. Its actually 55v, because the ground is the center tap output of the tranformer(55+55=110)

Interesting you’re fixing a Festool. In USA nobody but Festool repair shops will repair . And I’ve tried several places where I get my other tools repaired . Worst part is a simple repair by these “ repair shops” are in Indiana where it’s mail out and get quote . Also in most cases I got a price of same amount to buy a new one . A simple repair like worn motor in my Case was $600 . Almost same price as a new one . I’ll never buy their shite again after that .

What do you not like about Mafell? Yes they are a stupid price compared to other tools, but so is anything that's not made in China. You said before that the switch was too cheap for the price of the saw, but a saw that costs 200 euro to repair in 20 years of constant use sounds good to me. Im not berating you, just a genuine question.
@deandohertygreaserАй бұрын
I'm not trying to say they are bad, but at over 700 euro, I'm not sure the price makes them Any better than other brands. Plus it's a crosscut saw, so they don't get a massive amount of work like a proper plunge saw gets. They are a nice saw and perform very good, but I would have nothing more to say for them that would justify the price.
@Thebattler86Ай бұрын
@@deandohertygreaser I was told by someone who was in a tour of the Mafell factory 25 years ago that they make their own motors, and they made the motors and other parts for Festool. Whether this is still true today I don't know, but if it is it may explain the insane price.
