I read somewhere once 'Books are no more threatened by e-readers than stairs are by escalators' and that pretty much sums up my view on them. They are by no means a replacement and the original will always be preferred for many reasons, but the more 'advanced' version is sometimes just easier and more practical. I have a kindle paperwhite and I love it, although I read no where near as much on it as I do physical books. Despite that, it's just nice to have for when I do want to read on it, like on holiday. There's a massive difference, in my opinion, between kindle screens (excluding the kindle fire) and tablet screen like iPads though, kindles are much more like having an actual book!

I was bought a kindle as a present a few years ago & at the time I was mortified & insisted I wouldn't get any use out of it. I was bring a book snob and I was wrong! I will never stop loving the feel of a real book, the smell of them and that satisfying feeling when the pages in your right hand start to get thinner BUT kindles are excellent for travel & slipping in your handbag. It doesn't have to be one or the other, you can have both! I'd recommend not getting a back lit one though, better for your eyes & all that. X

Hello from America. I feel the same way you do about books. I love holding them and taking in their colors and the feeling of accomplishment when you finish it. I received a Nook (Barnes and Noble e-reader) a few years ago as a present and I thought I'd hate it. I was somewhat of the "book" snob...but it turns out I love it. It's great for when you wake up in the middle of the night and want to read yourself back to sleep without waking the hubby by turning on the light, compact enough for trips (like you mention). But I also continue to read actual books....Like another poster said: it's like stairs and escalators...You use them both.

I couldn't live without my kindle! At home I have such a small bedroom which is already full of books, if you added the 100 books which are on my kindle too there wouldn't be any space for me! And at Uni it's so nice to not have to worry about where to put all my books without causing clutter and having to decide which books to take with me or which ones to leave at home. Having a kindle also means that I can just carry that around in my bag, instead of a big book which might get ripped or tattered. I do love buying a book every now and again but I now have a tendency to buy the eBook because they're usually so much cheaper.

My mum has a kindle and she uses it all the time when we're on holiday but having a kindle means not collecting books for your bookshelves (if you use it exclusively) and you don't get that lovely book smell as you read. If I were to get a kindle, it would probably be used for holidays and nothing else because I'd miss the browsing aspect in bookshops and, of course, the collecting and adding to my bookshelf. That's something you can't remove from the whole experience, in my opinion. I love your videos, Gi! They always make me feel a lot better. :)

I love to hold an actual book in my hands. I like to have them all displayed in front of me. However, I also use this app called Wattpad. You can read stories for free (which is great!), but these stories are also written by people like me. Most of the time they're unpublised and I think that's what makes it so special. Honestly, most of them are amazing. Some even better than published books. And maybe for you this would be a great app as well. You might even help some writers who would like to get published, seeing that you are a published author.

I was completely against Kindles and e-readers in general. I have (and still do) romanticise books. The smell, the feel. Turning the pages. The weight of the book sort of equalled the weight of the journey. And then my best friend bought me a kindle for my birthday. It completely turned me around. The e-ink is pleasant to read. (Mine is not backlit so easy on the eyes.) I can re-size the text. Making it easier to see. It's light. So when breast feeding bubs it was simple to balance with one hand. A slight push of the thumb turns the page. I went from reading around 8 books in the year to 74. The ease of access meant that I was suddenly reading books that I might not have given a go in the past. I also never lose my place. (which has dampened my collecting of bookmarks - I suppose there has to be some down side) And I still buy paper books. The books that I just fall in love with. Or an author that I'm a fan of. I'll buy the kindle edition and the paper edition for my library collection. I was so happy when JK Rowling finally put the Harry Potter books in ebook format. Even though I own them all. They are such comfort food for me. It's nice to be able to carry them with me in my kindle too. Also with a kindle. People no longer stop me to give me their opinion about the book I'm reading. "Like eeww you like fantasy? Why would you read that rubbish?" Because they can't see the cover. You could be reading War and Peace for all they know. As you can tell. I have nothing but positive experiences with my E-reader.

I love my kindle. It saves my life sometimes. But what people forget is that just because you have a kindle or any kind of ereader doesn't means youll stop buying physical books or loving them. I still buy 'book' books but what it means is that if I'm going camping or a long train journey I can take more with me. You can also find loads of new and exciting authors as well as Many people have their books published in ereader format first before they get published, like The Trylle Trilogy by Amanda Hocking (which is brilliant btw) so yeah and I do know when friends of mine have been against the kindle reading way, the moment they get one they adore it and forget any insults they previously gave it

I ummd and ahhhd about getting a kindle for ages because, like you, I enjoy the feel, smell etc of having an actual book. However after finishing a book in a series and then not being able to get the next book because all of the book shops had sold out I immediately regretted not having one! So I now have one, I have enjoyed many of the free books which I wouldn't necessarily have bought otherwise, and I can get a new book whenever I want! I don't have to worry about losing my place, and I can read in bed when my husband is asleep without disturbing him with a bright light, because it's backlit which I just turn down. The only thing I miss is reading in the bath!!

So I advise you to get one because 1 they are light and easy to travel with 2 There is no glare, you will not be able to read you iPad while sitting in the sun 3 they are cheaper, I am not worried about brining it to the beach or pool .$79 vs $450 4 and make sure you get one the is 3 or 4G, then you can download new books anywhere you don't have to be on wifi. Happy Reading

I bought a kindle last year and it took me a while to forgive myself as I love books so much and felt a bit like I was betraying them. However, saying that, my kindle has been so useful for taking on holidays, and also because I've been moving between uni and home a lot, its great to know I don't have to take all my books with me, just my kindle. I also love the fact that you can download books instantly. But, I think its important to remember that just because you get a kindle, it doesn't mean you have to stop reading actual books, I think a balance is good, I still buy and read physical books as well, mainly because with a kindle you don't get the new book smell!

I love reading books on my kindle. They are cheap, light,... just practical really. And it is not like you have to stop buying/reading physical copies. When I really like a book I read on my kindle, I just get the physical copy afterwards or I read the preview on my Kindle and then get the physical copy if I like it. And this way, the books you own that are on your shelves actually represent the books you love. So don’t be too scared of e-books. Kindles are great and they will not be the end of the books in physical, papery, good smelling form. :)

Hey Gi, I just wanted to say that I quite like the video and that it made me think about two things. The first one is e-book-readers. It is right that you get your books quick and they use little energy (most of the time) and you can take so many more with you, but there are several reasons why I do not feel like buying one for myself at the moment. The first is that you limit your choice of where you can buy books - because the Kindle is made by amazon and at least here in Germany you can't read the e-books which the libraries offer on them because it is a different system and I think this goes for a whole bunch of other providers. And the second reason is that you might not be able to read the e-books anymore when you might one day want to buy a different e-book-reader or they update their system. Also it is not that easy to lend an e-book you bought to another person or give it as a gift to a friend after you finished reading. But then - reading is great in general so I shouldn't care about whether it is done an a book or a screen. And then I felt like you really do not need to apologize because you sound like you are sponsored. You should just be able to talk about what you enjoy. Somehow KZbin made this hard sometimes. Anyway, have a lovely weekend. Thank you for all your videos.

I love reading on my kindle! It's not back lit so it's nice to read off! I also find the glare off white paper and some books distracting, but you don't get that on a kindle. And you can change the font size as I'm lazy and don't like reading books with tiny writing! But then I still buy books too, especially if I've got the rest of the series or other books by that author, I love buying the Cecelia Ahern books in actual book format! But for the amount of books you can take, compared with the space and weight, it is definitely worth it!

Because I have so manny heavy school books I can't really take a regular book with me, so the kindle is awesome for that! I love that I don't have too worry about my books running out when I'm on holliday, and you can take your kindle to the poolside or the beach and not worry about it getting wet! (Well if you have a waterproof case.. but they arent that expensive!) I also love that I can get lots of books in english on the kindle, I'm swedish and there are just not enough books in english at the bookstores in sweden. So now I usually read books in english on my kindle and regular book books in Swedish :)

Honestly if you have an ipad, I'd say just stick to using the kindle app because it works just as well, but if you don't want to do that, I DO really think buying a kindle is a great option. I didn't really have any desire for one, and was convinced I didn't need it, but once I got one as a birthday present, I never looked back!! Obviously there's no substitute for the way an actual book smells or the way it feels when you physically turn the last page of a book, but it's so worth it! You can literally carry a library of 100s of books with you in an extremely light, easy and practical way and there's something SO satisfying about being able to buy the next book in a series at 1am, from your bed when you've just finished the previous book in the series and you just HAVE to read the next one right away!! Also I sometimes read while I'm doing other things (brushing my teeth, getting dressed etc) so it's nice to only need one hand to hold the kindle, or to just rest it on a surface and carry on reading (obviously a book would slam shut if you just rested it on a surface), so yeah, I'd definitely recommend it! :)

I have a kindle for uni because I do English Lit and it's really great so I'd recommend it! (And you get loads of classics for free!)

I love my books too but a Kindle is great for holidays or long journeys, do it!

I bought my Kindle for myself as an early christmas present and I absolutely love it. I bought the Paperwhite II which has built in Wi-Fi that lets you buy and download books directly onto your Kindle. I love the backlight feature because it means you're not dependent on the lighting when reading. You can just adjust it to fit your surroundngs. As I live in Sweden, eBooks are not that accessible and they are not very cheap, atleast not in my opinion. I buy all my books from the US Amazon and the prices are really good. The only downside, in my opinion, to Amazon is that there are too many books to chose from. I think they have over 3 million titles and that just makes it so much harder for me to find a book. Silly, I know!

I just received a kindle for my birthday. I'm going away for a week and have downloaded some many books onto it because like you said i don't think I could bring so many books. I think it's a good investment :) but nothing beats a Physical book

I have a kindle and I love it. I'm currently doing a year-abroad here, in England and I forbade myself from buying books that are not related to uni because books are so heavy and having a kindle allows me to have loads of books on just one light device that I don't have trouble carrying on a plane once I get back home. I don't think it's the same experience to read on an iPad, or any tablet, and a e-reader. E-readers are made for reading, the screen is not backlit (not sure about that word) and it's not so tiring for your eyes. Try reading a book on Tom's kindle and see if you like it :)

E book readers are life savers for when you go away. You can't beat a good paperback though! :)

Only just heard about it, first fiction book I believe or at least to my knowledge with a established author that has a character, a main character at that with cystic fibrosis. I have cystic fibrosis. Awareness gold. :) love you videos G, inspires my secret dream of becoming an author.

I used to read on an iPad but the backlight put me off as it made me feel as if my eyes were straining. What I love about my kindle is that it is just like reading a sheet of paper :)

You can get a kindle app on your iPad or download books to the iPad. If you've got one anyway then make the most of that instead :) nothing like a good book though!!
