It's so easy to get into the doomer mindset. But I remembered that so many marginalized groups, particularly African Americans, have been dealing with racism and systemic racism for literally hundreds of years. And they still keep fighting to make progress. It reminds me of a quote from James Baldwin that encapsulated this perfectly, "I can't be a pessimist because I am alive. To be a pessimist means that you have agreed that human life is an academic matter. So, I am forced to be an optimist. I am forced to believe that we can survive, whatever we must survive". It's a quote that always reminder me to be active than a passive observer making fun of people still trying to make a difference and beat the odds.

Things may look bleak, even hopeless, but our enemies want us to be miserable. If we can get up every day, do something that makes us happy, and do even that little bit of work to push back against the demons that have infested this country, whether it be donating to causes, volunteering at clinics, or even just being a shoulder for a friend in a difficult time, we can deny them victory in at least one aspect.

That’s what I’m doing, Thomas wants liberals to be miserable, but he ain’t gonna make me miserable, I’m gonna be as hopeful and happy as I can, I’ll go to work with a smile, hang out with friends and play games with, go to restaurants and enjoy the food, etc That’s what I will and kinda am doing, so boom, he failed with me, no matter what I ain’t giving them the satisfaction he oh so craves, in my battle between him and me, he lost, and he can damn well lose against you guys too. Don’t give up, all of what they are doing is gonna crumble and bite them in the ass at some point in time, no action is complete without its consequences. Nothing lasts forever, not even their stupid campaign.

I’m actually more optimistic than ever. There are solutions and we will be the change we want to see. This is coming from some who is now making capital and preparing for the worst with a recession and fascists on the horizon. I and all us will not let them take away our right or kill democracy.

@@ssilver9263 oh, yeah. Life sucks! I just got evicted by my parents for being trans, and I have to dose up with adderall and SSRI’s every morning just to get through the day. But you know what? I still get through it. One foot in front of the other, and I still manage to find moments of solace and happiness. I just joined my local DSA and I’ll be volunteering as a clinic escort for a nearby planned parenthood as soon as Covid restrictions are lifted. I don’t say this to toot my own horn, but as examples of small things I can, and will do to carve out my little piece of safety and sanity. If we all pitch in, we’ll make it, and even if we don’t see victory in our lifetimes, our grandkids will thank us.

I want to share this, because I think it bears such great importance to this topic: "At the dances, I was one of the most untiring and gayest. One evening, a cousin of Sasha (Alexander Berkman), a young boy, took me aside with a grave face, as if he were to announce the death of a dear comrade. He whispered to me that it did not behoove an agitator to dance. Certainly not with such reckless abandon, anyway. It was undignified for one who was on the way to become a force in the anarchist movement. My frivolity would only hurt "The Cause". I grew furious at the impudent interference of the boy. I told him to mind his own business. I was tired of having "The Cause" constantly thrown into my face. I did not believe that a cause which stood for a beautiful ideal, for anarchism, for release and freedom from convention and prejudice, should demand the denial of life and joy. I insisted that our cause could not expect me to become a nun and that the movement should not be turned into a cloister. If it meant that, I did not want it. I want freedom, the right to self-expression, everybody's right to beautiful, radiant things. Anarchism meant that to me, and I would live it in spite of the whole world -- prisons, persecution, everything. Yes, even in spite of the condemnation of my own comrades I would live my beautiful ideal." - Emma Goldman

Excellently put. I don't know who this person is, but she seems to have understood the meaning of leftism far better than any theory-reciting tankie who demands Gravitas and Reverence and constant reminders of the Struggle. If anything, it always seemed to me that that sort of sentiment that focuses constantly on reminding people of misery rather than relieving it - the way Stalinist and Maoist literature was forced to revolve around upholding Party values and depicting the mundane struggles of the proletariat - aligned more with fascism than anarchism or even socialism. After all, it's a sort of fatalistic, persistently negative impulse, a certain obsession with the idea of persecution and death, that drives the fascist ideology... But leftist ideals aren't about glorious death or honor or anything of that sort. They're about believing that the world can and should be made better than it is. And if your ideological values consist of belief in a better, freer, happier life for everyone, how can you uphold them by rejecting freedom and happiness in the first place?

If no one was there for me, then no one will be there for everyone else too and I wanted to change that. Almost 3 years later, and my initial response to Roe being overturned, to go and march up in the streets and fight if I have to. Wish this was on the main channel! It’s ok to be sad. It’s ok to be angry. It’s ok to feel lost or anything else. But thinking that there’s no hope is only going to hurt us. Some people in the comments really watched this whole video and went “I’m going to be a doomer anyways” great whatever feel that way if you want but don’t spread that shit to other people. I’m in my early 20’s. Abortion has always been legal, Gay marriage was legalized before I was old enough to realize it even applied to me. My whole life rights have just fallen into my lap and everyone needs to come to terms with the fact that we don’t live in that time anymore. We can get back there but no one is going to fight for our rights for us and doomering will get in the way of that. Vaush is right in terms of history this is par for the course. Humanity has come from much worse and it’s 100% possible to get back to where we want to be. Everyone should be doing at least one thing other than voting. Join a DSA, canvas, donate, talk to non voting friends and family, buy a gun and get trained, volunteer, call elected officials, etc. also interact with all of vaush’s/ other lefty content peoples shit. Boosting the algorithm means more people see it and understand what’s going on and become further left. Lastly, like some other have said, conservatives want you to be miserable and they want you to suffer. Do your best to separate your politics time with your non politics time. Don’t be thinking about this shit when you’re trying to enjoy video games or something you enjoy it’ll only burn you out. It’s not selfish and in fact it will make you more effective so go jerk it for your rights or something. I recommend having 2 youtube channels. One where I engage with politics and one where I don’t. It helps me stay away from scary titles when I’m trying to watch my duck videos. Also, if you’re a leftist you probably want the quality of life to improve for everyone and that has to include yourself. You deserve to be happy and you can’t pour from an empty cup. I’m begging you to do your best to be happy when you aren’t thinking about politics and be hopeful, determined, and ready to take action when you are. We need a strong community right now and people being like “seeee it’s all over now :(((“ is not gonna foster that. At this point I’m literally enjoying my hobbies out of spite. I will not give any satisfaction to those who would see me dead. Anyways shark’s video about abortion and how to save the world also has a dope speech so check it out.

Advice from a Chilean: you guys haven't even started fighting yet, and you're already giving up? Buck up, you’ve got the power to make the elites shit themselves and bow to you, you just need to ACT. I’m serious, American inaction is infuriating. We did the “Explosion Social” over lesser problems than the ones you guys are experiencing, and if the shit that happens in the US happened here, or the UK, or France, or Germany, etc, there’d be French-revolution level hell to pay, yet you haven't even mobilized yet. If you don't know what I’m talking about btw, here in Chile we got so tired of 30 years of neoliberalism that mass protests erupted, the protestors took on and beat back both the cops and the army, we forced the Piñera gov. to conceded a plebiscite for a new Constitution, and then we not only crushed the vote for a new constitution, but also made it so that it was democratic, with 0 acting politicians, and historic in a bunch of ways. For good measure, we also replaced the Piñera government with a millennial social democrat that started his career as a student protestor against education scams, while crushing both the neoliberal candidates and the pro-Pinochet fascist one. If this new Constitution gets approved in September (and I see it to be likely that it will), there are many good ideas becoming Constitutional law, including the abolishment of the Senate, indigenous multi-nationalism, decommodified water, guaranteed healthcare, housing, pensions, etc, expanded human rights, and many MANY more things. @@Ass_of_Amalek Precisely; people then had NO idea what mircobes were, no idea how disease spreads, no idea that hygiene is paramount. All they knew is that loved ones are dying and if you are near said loved ones, or their corpses, you would soon join them. Some believed the Morality to be God's punishment (as multiple plagues are documented in the Bible) and this is were the term "self-flogging" came from: they would literally whip themselves in submission to the Lord. Others, unsurprisingly, blamed it on the Jewish community and most cities exiled their Jewish population. But places like Warsaw allowed them in. And because bathing is required for Semitic rituals, the Plague wasn't as decimating as it was everywhere else. I think Vaush and others in this space MUST do the following to really see an increase in action: 1) This is your job. You represent the most politically devoted among us...and yet we never see you out there doing the grunt work. I could say the same about anyone in the space...ThoughtSlime, Tim Pool, Ben Shapiro, etc. Unless you're being paid to attend and speak at a venue AKA doing your job...you are not seen taking time out of your free time away from work to do the things you want the rest of us to do. 2) The above is an assumption on my part. Perhaps for the last year Vaush has spent 500 hours of his free time doing calls, going door to door etc. He's been doing exactly what needs to be done. If this is the case and my point #1 is a total lie...then you MUST talk about this and make regular segments on it. Do a quick 15 minute piece on your experiences going door to door each week. Talk about how you think things are going...do you feel you're making progress. Do you think the organization is headed in the right direction. Have you seen/heard of growth within the group you are an active part in during your off hours. Anyone can say to do something...its an entirely different and far more meaningful thing to actually do it. I have every confidence in the world that if Vaush did both 1 (which he might already be actively doing) and 2 (which he's clearly not doing) then his show of activism and seriousness during his own precious free time outside of work would better get people to act. I follow Tim Pool as well...he was absurdly passionate about opposing vaccine mandates and the freedom convoy, etc. Not once did he go to those rallies just to attend and show his support in the crowd like a normal other person who wasn't there to do a paid gig. I guess he didn't really care that much. Actions speak louder than words. If you want people to take action then you need to be that example during your own precious personal time off too. Its desperately what you want for the country...and its what you're trying to inspire others to want as well.

@8BLOO8

Hey!! I don’t know your or your circumstances that well so idk how helpful I can be but I totally get where you’re coming from. Sometimes being hopeful is like a muscle and you have to work it out to make it stronger but you can also burn yourself out if you try too hard too soon. Don’t beat yourself up for the way you feel right now. When you’re feeling upset just feel upset and don’t hold back or try to keep it in then when you’re doing something you enjoy try your best to focus on being happy in that moment. It can be hard and I’m still practicing but it helps. Sometimes I’ll be doing one of my hobbies and I’ll starting thinking about politics and get upset but then I’m all like “now’s not the time for that I’m going to enjoy myself goddamit >:(“. It becomes a habit after a while. It’s especially harder to find stuff to do in rural areas but always check for DSA’s or other organizations to join, ways to volunteer, canvas, know how to use a gun, and contact any democrats who are running and see if there are ways you can help. Even if the seat is unlikely to change it certainly won’t hurt to try I mean look what happened in Georgia! Plus it might pay off in the long run. If you prefer online engage me to try donating, writing to officials, interacting with lefty content, joining online orgs, etc. there’s ALWAYS something you can do! As far as the cognitive dissonance goes be patient with yourself and just keep chipping away at that old mindset and it will pay off. It means so much that you’re aware of it already. I don’t know any of creators offhand but I’m sure there are some who have gone through what you are going through and that might be able to help. I’m sorry if that was a lot and if it wasn’t too helpful but I just wanted you to know that there are lefties who are here for you!

There's not always some grand and meaningful action you can take, and that's okay. Not everybody is able to take to the streets, or join organizations. Simply strengthening yourself, educating yourself on relevant subjects, making connections where you can, is all itself action. If things get really bad, having somebody 'inside' the belly of the beast is also always valuable, even if the part you play is quiet, seemingly small. Any action is good action, and action doesn't have to be flashy. Every little thing you do, every way you enhance your own understanding of issues, works towards a common goal of creating a society that is equitable and free - the society that we all want to see be ubiquitous.

Two words: Climate Change None of us have the power to fix the massive, literally globe threatening issues we face, and our leaders are failing us. We don’t have decades to campaign and push for incremental reform. So you have to excuse those of us who see these problems and look at our institutional paralysis (to put it mildly) and failure to act over the last several decades. These problems are too large for little positive effects to add up in time to matter. This isn’t like any other time in the past. Personally, I’m genuinely afraid this is the end, and anyone saying otherwise seems at the very least to be slightly naive. Sure, some people will probably find ways to live in the wreckage of our cities, but living with the knowledge of the kind of collapse we are facing is devastating for me, and I’m sure many others. I sympathize with Vaush’s sentiment that he’s looked at as a leader to pioneer a way to a better future, when he’s doesn’t have much more control than any of us. At the same time, admonishing people for their very well founded terror at the future from his place of relative comfort doesn’t sit well with me knowing the future we have in store unless some positive change comes. Very radically and very soon. In a way it’s akin to yelling at passengers on a plane in a nosedive to stop screaming when the cockpit is locked and only god knows what the pilots are doing as the plane hurtles toward the ground.

yep. the crises of climate change and resource depletion make it almost certain that the world population will drop by billions by the end of the century. of course there are different pathways and it could be better or worse, but considering the state of politics, i think its going to be worse. i live in germany. i get renewable electricity and heat, use public transport/walk everywhere and have no car, i am vegan, i rarely travel and if so by train, i buy nothing i don't need or am going to get a lot of enjoyment out of for a long time. i still have about half the average co2 footprint of my country, or about the world's average, way too much to stay below 2°C by 2100. i know the carbon footprint itself is a scam, but it goes to show how radically we'd have to change our way of living to keep the world livable (at least in the short term), and i don't think enough first world people are up for it. and that's not even mentioning top soil loss or overfishing which if current trends continue will lead to the loss of almost all food production by 2060 more or less independently of climate change. it looks dire. of course, what we do now will shape the future. but immense suffering is all but guaranteed.

Certainly well within our lifetimes (unless you happen to already be elderly or have a terminal illness). The west coast is running out of water, and this is just the beginning of things getting really bad. How much more instability do you think the system can sustain? You’re legitimately deluded if you think it’s much more. Droughts, famines, and the inevitably precipitated escalating conflicts and outright war are already happening. This crisis is as immediate and devastating as a plane crash but on a planetary scale. Stop scolding doomsayers. They’re actually right about this one. Also, your presumption that people haven’t spent virtually their entire lives taking every conceivable action to do their best and help the situation is borderline insulting. Didn't take too much time, could do it on my schedule, barely had to talk to anyone, got lots of fresh air and exercise and felt great after. I'm definitely going to do it again next time I get an email about it because it was pretty easy and for a very good cause. And I want to work up the courage to do things like phone banking soon too, hopefully, but it's scary. And I donate to campaigns and charities fairly often. Edit: I found out about the door hanger thing for Fair Vote Canada by joining an email list. I joined the email list for the NDP as well and they keep me posted on whenever they need phone bankers/canvassers, etc. So I would say join some email lists.

What kind of life is worth living if you're not making the lives around you better? I can say for myself, from 2017-2019 or so I tried to live very selfishly. I picked the easy path, picking a secure job over a fulfilling one, choosing money over choosing fulfillment, depersonalizing my role by saying "if I don't do it, someone else will". But that's wrong. You are you. You get to choose how you spend your time, no one else. You can go to bed comfortable and empty, or you can go to bed uncomfortable and fulfilled. You live for yourself, every single day you don't get your nuggies is a bad day. You live for others, every day you fight is a good day, even if you lose. Resignation is why we're here in the first place, so be active.

Yes i agree that the rhetoric towards trans people is nearing a third Reich boiling point but saying "there's not much i can do to help" is a part of the doomer mindset and it's not helping. If you don't know where to start, that's fine. Start by going to these conservative political rallies who call for genocide and call out every speaker that comes up on stage. Let their intentions be known to the people around them. Make a lot of noise and do not give them a chance to speak without the thought of someone watching them who could ruin their political career. Make them afraid to go out into public. Raze hell on their front lawns if you have to. My point is to start by making A LOT of noise at these rallies

While I feel for people who are discouraged by current events, especially those already struggling with their own problems, I can't help but get irritated by doomers (whether they are joking or in earnest). I'm no Nietzschean Superman, but my experiences lead me to believe that our privilege does endow us with responsibility to ourselves if not to those less lucky than ourselves. To claim doom while we are so lucky to be alive in our circumstance is to condemn the less privileged to the same doom whether they like it or not, which is disgraceful, and quite possibly elitist in more ways than one.

If you want to be more politically useful, I can't stress this enough. VOTE IN LOCAL ELECTIONS. Better yet, tell your friends to vote too, meet your candidates, volunteer for their campaigns. A lot of the decisions that impact our daily lives the most are made in city council meetings by officials who won elections with 10-20% turnout. I commonly see candidates in my city of 140,000 win by a margin of less than 100 votes, and a lot of the conservative candidates win only with the support of a few surrounding suburbs. Flipping city councils is surprisingly easy for the impact it can have. It takes me less than 15 minutes to vote in local elections since the lines are short to nonexistent. My city just recently got a blue majority in the city council and since then, we've passed one of just 6 nondiscrimination ordinances including LGBTQ people in the state of Texas, and just a couple days ago, they narrowly voted to deprioritize enforcement of anti-abortion laws by our city PD (with the pressure from hundreds of protesters outside city hall). Progressive city councils are also extremely important for approving new housing developments that the local NIMBYs show up in droves to oppose. Much of our housing shortage is caused by the excessive proceduralism and political roadblocking by local governments and NIMBYs making it exceedingly difficult to build new housing, and much of our car dependency is due to incompetent local leaders caving in to the demands of impatient drivers and outsourcing decisions to traffic engineers. Electing people at the local level who are prepared to tackle these issues is critical.

Those aren’t the only two options though. Donate, volunteer, interact with lefty content to boost their algorithm, vote, buy guns, convince family and friends to vote, join local organizations, go to protests, go to local city hall meetings etc. you can find something to do. And if you can’t or don’t want to do any of those things then thats ok. Take a step back, feel your emotions, process your emotions, and come back when you’re ready. And if you still don’t want to do anything by then then maybe just take a break from politics. I’m not saying this to come after you or anything but if you’re just going to watch these videos and get stressed and sad and not do anything then at the end of the day that’s more harmful then you not engaging with this, doing stuff that makes you happy or working in your mental health, and not anything ya know? Also I think the Ukraine thing was more like “look at what these people in Ukraine are doing their circumstances are waaayyyyyy shittier but they’re doing so much more and they have so much hope we can do that too”

You have the choice to do something or do nothing. What is gained from doing nothing? It's easier, sure, but you feel worse. You live spending your time for others, I guarantee you you will have greater sense of community and faith in humanity, and a belief that things can always change. You will live a more fulfilling life. A lot of the right loves to call us pessimists for always pointing out the negatives in the system, but that makes us the true optimists because we have the belief that people can make things better. We have institutions and technology and knowledge people hundreds of years of go would have killed for.

around 7:30 almost touched, but that's not the exact right word, to see Vaush break his personal "kayfabe", abandon the bit he's otherwise constantly committed to (that he's an omniscient philosopher god-king who has "read all theory" and can see the future), and admit that he's just like, a guy, who plays video games, just a guy, like the rest of us, and that he's scared, and he doesn't know what to do, and he does not have "The Answers" for all of us. It's commendable. And it reminds me (in the least negative way) that as someone who's almost ten years older than Vaush I probably shouldn't even be watching this channel, but I enjoy his content (30%) and it has become my habit (70%, I'm a creature of habit). And I am mentally ill, and disabled. I probably shouldn't own a gun, and I probably can't agitate for political change, so really sometimes the best I can manage is to tear my eyes away from the trainwreck...and that's okay too. idk.

Do take care not to stretch yourself too thin though it’s good to have time to relax so you aren’t emo or emotionally drained its honestly part of good political practice. I’d say give it a shot, let them know your schedule and if it becomes too much just ask them if there’s any other ways you can contribute that are less time consuming and I’m sure they’ll have resources or ideas. It might take some figuring out at first but hopefully you can find a balance :)

I am not much of a people person or a communicator in spoken language without a script. That being said, I'd probably say these are the times where one might even need to consider actions beyond what Vaush has proposed to even preserve democracy otherwise the electoralism is for naught and the only ways out are leave or the Basque method. The Basque method was partially of timing of Francisco Franco's poor health and a lot of anger that dated back to Guernica being bombed by Germans invited by Franco himself in 1936. But before then, Basques were already forming worker's co-ops in the 1950s and signs of militant leftism had formed by the early 60s. By the mid-1960s, Galicians had also started to militarize leftwards despite the fact Franco was born in Galicia and by the time the flying car happened, everywhere in the north of Spain except Aragon was a powderkeg resulting in a democracy upon Franco's death in 1975. Edit: The history of the end of Francoist Spain might also be an inspiration not as much by incrementalism, but because the Federalist judges left us a loophole to fight back.

The Wobblies of the late 19th and early 20th century saw workers burn in buildings and strikers shot by Pinkertons, and yet they sang even when they were truly doomed, because nothing pushes a cause further than showing your humanity in the face of absolute tyranny. The civil rights activists wrote poetry and prose. Fight because you are human, and because nothing is more demoralizing to the tyrant than seeing humanity persevere.
