The thing is, puberty, menstruation and indeed ovulation is quite complicated in humans. Not just speaking to average ages but the phenomenons themselves. Typically speaking if a girl has the right amount of hormones necessary, she can indeed start to ovulate at quite a young age. Even before she has her first menstrual cycle. Meaning that menstruation is not absolutely necessary for pregnancy to occur. It just tends to be a little “haphazard” at first. So whilst not “average” this story is sadly biologically possible, so to speak. That said it’s probably a bit hard to gain meaningful statistics on such a phenomenon since underage pregnancy (or rather the acts facilitating such) are usually illegal in most countries by default.

On the topic of exemptions for the life of the pregnant person, Vaush is absolutely right. The way the laws in most states are written does very little to accommodate for situations where a pregnancy endangers someone's life. Most if not all of them specify that exemptions can only be made in a "medical emergency." In practice, this means that doctors have to wait until someone's life is imminently in danger before they are allowed to terminate the pregnancy. This is a huge problem because: 1) Delaying terminating a pregnancy that will ultimately be life threatening increases the risk of someone dying or having severe complications. As an example, waiting until an ectopic pregnancy ruptures often causes the pregnant person to have to have a fallopian tube removed. 2) There isn't an objective and clear line between someone being sick but not having a medical emergency and someone actually having a medical emergency, and it's easy to misjudge how sick someone is. A person with a ruptured ectopic pregnancy can go from having mild symptoms to coding within minutes. Add doctors being worried about losing their license and/or being arrested if they make a mistake and a known bias that doctors have toward female-presenting patients to the equation, and you have a massive risk that doctors will wait too long and people will die.

I just always wonder, being a victim of sexual abuse when I was very young, how anyone can even do things like this. I’ve argued with a conservative about the law already, and they tried to cite 2919.17 about exceptions to the abortion ban… except that is the old exceptions for the prior ban on all viable fetuses over 28 weeks. The new section is “Section 2919.195 | Performance of abortion after detection of fetal heartbeat; penalty.” What’s worse is in the exception for life or severe risk to the mother, A) they used “physician's reasonable medical judgment”, while the previous law used “physician's good-faith medical judgment”, so that means it’s now the same situation as all the insurance claim disputes that go to court all the time, instead of having to show negligence. B) the section that defines serious risk to the mother say it is only for “”A medically diagnosed condition that constitutes a "serious risk of the substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function" includes pre-eclampsia, inevitable abortion, and premature rupture of the membranes, but does not include a condition related to the woman's mental health.”” So as far as I know the only medically diagnosed condition the 10 year old had was pregnancy, being 10 isn’t a “medically diagnosed condition”, so yeah. The fact that THIS attorney general said it’s legal doesn’t mean the next one or the one after won’t charge the doctor, and if I was one of the doctors I would worry about the risk (small but sadly real) of being charged with this crime 12 years from now during trumps 4th term, unless there’s a statute of limitations for it I didn’t see. Penalty for doctor is 5th degree felony (either probation or 6-12 months, $2,500 fine), a $20k penalty, the state board may pull your medical license, and specifically opens you up to civil liability in a bunch of ways.

Well I'd venture to guess that the reason the assault got reported was because of the pregnancy. It was stated that it was the second time, so presumably the first one went unreported or wasn't acted upon by police. Maybe having a ten year old show up at the hospital pregnant finally lit a fire under the asses of authorities, and was the undeniable evidence that could not be ignored. Based on those circumstances alone I think it's possible that she had suffered previous abuse. And seeing as it only took a few weeks after Roe being overturned for a case to surface, you can assume it has been and will be happening frequently enough to merit a legal exception.

The issue with the exceptions in the legal language is so vague about what constitutes “life threatening emergency” that doctors won’t take the risk to do it, because the states are saying they absolutely WILL prosecute. It happened with prescriptions like benzos and opioids too. The DEA threatened them with losing their license and ALL of their assets so nobody would risk it and they forced people to go cold turkey even if they had a higher risk of death via fatal seizure. That’s where republicans not being able to put two and two together REALLY works in the GOP’s favor - they think laws literally spell it out.
