You absolutely hit the nail on the head with the supercharging network being 50% of the overall appeal and advantage of Tesla. When I bought my Model 3 18 months ago, there was 1 supercharging location within 30 minutes of my house. Now there are 6. If I ever had any doubts about the purchase over the last few months, they were extinguished pretty quickly by the fact that no other ev's come close to that kind of reliability and abundance.

Every electrical outlet in the world is an electric vehicle charging point. The whole topic of range anxiety is completely overblown for the vast majority of people who are commuting fewer than 50km per day (~30 miles). Huge range comes with the penalty of weight, cost and handling.

The answer is obvious. Gas stations need to start having charging stations, which they are starting to. The first gas station to go all in on this will see astronomical ROI, but none of them have the balls. Its not up to the vehicle manufacturers; ford doesnt have gas stations. Gas stations are the most suited to deploy what you are talking about, even better suited than Tesla in many respects.
@joserendon1025
@joserendon1025 3 жыл бұрын
The problem will be compatibility. Gas pumps are a universal fit. If and when gas stations start including charging stations as you said, there needs to be a universal connector and standard for charging. So it doesn't matter what brand of car you pull up with, you'll be able to charge, same as with gas cars.

You got it. In my talk I gave at last year’s Full Charged Live I talked about how Tesla will still thrive even after their tax credit is gone, and I said the #1 advantage of buying a Tesla is the Supercharger network. Range and charging is the key for EVs to eventually overtake ICE vehicles. 300 miles should be the absolute minimum for any EV if they want to be taken seriously.

I think ideally, any large scale effort too replace gas vehicles would have to come from the government. The whole super charger thing reminds me of the old Bell company and telephones. One day, the government is gonna step in an make it all work together. As it should. The goal for electric cars should not be profit, but saving the planet first. Profit can come after the landscape of vehicles has changed.

Completely agree that a charging network is a HUGE factor when it comes to choosing an electric car. I've been watching EVs for years, but finally bought a Model 3 largely because of the Tesla Supercharger network. Fortunately, I haven't had any issues with the build of my Model 3 which was not in the first wave of deliveries. Maybe I got lucky. But also agree that Tesla needs to get solid on manufacturing.

I leased an EV up until a few months ago, and I can say that 200 is really, to me, the sweet spot to get people on board. Mine was 100 miles, and I had no where to charge it except home or the car dealership. I just used it to commute or to zip around for daily things on the weekend. It was not difficult to push it to that mileage limit, then it was done for the next 15 hours or so while it charged (I used the 110V charger, not a 220V. I wasn't about to mod my house for something that I wasn't keeping). However, with 200 miles, you could do short trips out of town on a weekend and still get back home fine. And statistically, most trips made in a car are pretty close to home (grocery stores, commuting to work, things like that), so with a 200 miles range, there wouldn't really be a fear of running out of charge within one day. It doesn't let you take a road trip, but I think it would be enough to get people jazzed.

@MGosling94
@MGosling94 3 жыл бұрын
@@NeoRichardBlake I think that makes sense if you have a garage and a home charger to connect it to. If you have to fuel up at public chargers, charging that often is a hassle. Yes! That's what I've been thinking. IEEE FTW! This is technology that moves, not just a car. Once everyone agrees on a standard, things will take off. For some reason, it seems like car manufacturers think they need to invent everything themselves, in-house. It's such an old-brain industry. EVs could be here and fully functional already if they would just work together a little bit. Of course, Chevron and Texaco may have a hand in that too, since I'm sure they don't want the auto industry to change... Maybe if they develop the tech, and then they're the licensing bodies for it... They can live off tech-patent licensing rather than from selling fossil fuel... Again, they're an old-school thinking industry though. With both of the primary industries being close-minded and resistant to change it makes things unnecessarily slow and difficult.

@twanglo5385
@twanglo5385 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah and they'll make the components wear out faster, but make it practically non-fixable so you have to buy another for much more than the competition. Apple is the worst business in history for scamming and ripping people off with stuff that doesn't last. They incentivize people to buy the airpods which retail for more than I bought my phone for and they can sell them for almost 300$ because Apple inconveniently has the charging input as the earplugs input so users are encouraged to buy the airpods as they can't charge and listen to music simultaneously. Not to mention they purposely design the phones to lose battery life quickly with only a short duration of use and age. Thus you'd usually have it charging for half the time and you get it. People who love figuratively taking it up the rump from a corporate giant favour that company but I'd recommend avoiding them. Buy stuff that lasts. I smashed my iPhone 8 because it was cheap garbage 🗑️

I really don't respond on topics I watch on youtube...but as a Tesla owner who has both commuted 600 miles a week and did weekend road trips and stayed a home during covid, everyone is overlooking the main reason for buying an EV....CLIMATE CHANGE. Supercharging is the number 2 reason we went with Tesla. Like Marques pointed out charging in a reasonable time with the range will change the mindset of ICE drivers. Our family went from a truck and an SUV (6 cylinder) to a hybrid and an EV. The hybrid is now driven maybe once every 2 weeks, maybe... We have drank the cool aid and got the solar panels and Powerwall as well...we are all in on saving the planet!

Typically you know how far you are driving with an EV (or any car) and there are apps to see where a ChargePoint is. I’ve never had that issue once I found a good charge spot in this garage near my place and it was 100% free to use. Also if you live in a city, near a city, or near a campus they mostly have free charging in their parking garages. Car Dealerships also have ChargePoints, and some store parking lots. You tend to get used to finding them or noticing once you own one. There’s also the option for at home, over night charging. I only topped up at the parking garages etc. and if I would park my car at a store I’d put it on the charger if there’s a ChargePoint in the parking lot. The apps like ChargePoint are super helpful too. I drove an all electric BMWi3 2017 super reliable, but not nearly 200 miles per charge. You get used to charging it up every night.

Gas stations rely on volume and the money is made on in store sales, not the gas. You can only fit so many charging spots and now instead of having people in and out in a few minutes, they are tying up spots for 10,20,30 minutes, that's an incredibly horrible business model. Also there are millions and millions of gas and diesel cars on the road that will continue to be on the road for decades to come and continue to be made too. A more interesting question is how much it would cost to setup chargers and how much you make from them, I suspect the numbers are not great. If anything I would keep the amount of pumps I have and add maybe 5 chargers in the back, but replacing the pumps with chargers would be pure idiocy.

@@kadmow Tesla's bag has adapters that are suited to the standards of the country in which the car is sold. So they can be plugged into a variety of sockets, like high amperage dryer/utility sockets as well as regular wall plugs. It also comes with a J1772 adapter as standard so any home charger will work with it (don't have to buy one of theirs if you don't want to). If you want to plug into CCS Combo they have that and also a CHADEMO adapter for sale in Europe for 3rd party DC Fast charging. In North America they only have the CHADEMO adapter for sale so far; Because the supercharger network is so pervasive there that there's not a very big need to charge at 3rd party chargers outside of your home.

It's actually not a bad idea.
