This is such a stupid argument. If you compare ten years ago to now and include inflation it’s the same. This is the same market of people willing to pay 80k+ for a dodge. The same market of people willing to pay 40k for a v6 Camaro, the same market of people willing to pay 35k for a 4 cylinder. It’s priced appropriately, the problem is the economy itself.

As far as I can tell from what I've read online, the reason Ford won't allow tuning on the S650 is because cars nowadays are more computer than car. The S650 gets over the air updates from Ford to fix bugs in the software and add additional Gauge Cluster designs, which means the car has access to Ford's computer systems. This means in Ford's eyes, every single car essentially acts as an access point or backdoor to their internal computer systems. So, they see giving people the ability to tune their cars as allowing a potential vulnerability to take place where since consumers can tune the car, they can interface with something that has access to Ford's computer system, and that doesn't sit right with them. Most likely, if someone ever does actually manage to tune the factory S650 ECU, Ford will serve them with a lawsuit for tampering with their IT Security Systems. Because to them, these cars are computers and computers need to be secured. I'd say, if people can create a completely third party aftermarket ECU that replicates the factory computer lanes the car needs to function, but is completely separated from Ford's own internal systems, therefor no over the air updates or Ford remote diagnostic services, that will most likely be the only way that any of us will ever be able to tune the S650 from home. The only reason that the Whipple kits allow for a tune is because Whipple is partnered with Ford, and they're the ones accessing the cars, not the actual consumer. If something in Ford's systems were to be compromised because they gave Whipple access to tune the cars (i.e. someone using the tools Whipple includes in their supercharger kit to tune a car in ways Ford and Whipple don't intend), Ford would most likely axe their partnership with Whipple and discontinue all support for their products in the future. Likely suing Whipple for the 'breach' as well. Just another reason I don't see tuning on the S650 to be a possibility any time soon.

This sounds like a problem that Ford created, if that is infact the case. Software-as-a-service has really been an enabler of laziness and corner cutting in my opinion. Just release a damn good product with some halfway decent foresight and these manufacturers wouldn't have to 'tie strings' to their products.

other than the screens there's precious little different between the 550 and 650. the floorpan and front "frame" are identical (check the slots on the rs "frame rail" by the fuse box, the 550 mounting is there). two things going against the 650. 1) there aren't any other pony cars so there's no intercompany rivalry. 2) by the time you get a decent 650 and Whipple you can own a car that doesn't rattle and pop from the factory. anyway. sad days for the pony car world.

Now being a long time subscriber (Re-Do Blu) I have to say, you make a very good point. I knew about the locked ECU, but like you, I was optimistic about the future of the platform. Now that I have realized that my guy has had his for a year….and Ford has done nothing, I’m not sure what I’m going to do. GREAT VIDEO bro. I get what you’re saying but I did want to say this. Stock for stock. It’s the fastest muscle car out right now. Naturally aspirated that is. Secondly the car’s computer even without the tune is automatically calibrating for bolt on modifications without the tune. Headers, intakes, and fuel even with no tune are still picking up good power. With headers and intakes you’re going to be able to run close to an 11.5 and your 60-130 will be in the 9s. Which is super solid. Plus the new interiors are awesome. Im a Camaro owner, I love talking trash on stangs lol, it’s good fun for sure. I’ve owned two 5.0’s in the past though and the S650 has some seriously cool features.

My s550 with headers and Whipple 3.0 Lund tune put 2 plus cars on a Whipple s650 I raced. I make 700 to the wheels. So a 100 plus HP car gets gapped by a fully loaded last gen. Just bought a 24’ GT Premium (active exhaust + 20” wheels) before the new year. Several local dealers said they’ve been sitting on the lots for months. They blamed economy/2024 election “nerves” and just the lack of interest locally in coupes over Broncos and Trucks. I was happy to grab mine several grand under MSRP and got an interest rate through Ford about 1/2 of what my banks were offering (horrible) on new vehicles. I’d say price, interest rates and declining interest in coupes are all to blame over the actual vehicle’s blemishes/negatives. So far, I love the look and drive of my new S650.

Ford, understand your customers. Mustang lovers are workingclass enthusiasts who want freedom to do what they choose with their private automobile. That means tuning and running fuel systems that support E85. I bought a GT Premium with the hopes of making this car a street monster. The S550 is less expensive and can be built to be much faster than an S650. Why would anyone trade in their S550 or not just buy an S550? I think ford needs to go back to making cars for knuckle-dragging mouth-breathers and not cars for hair dressers and techies that want BMWs and C8s anyway. The quick fix is to drop a USB card somewhere (oopsie) and allow these cars to be tuned. Watch the buzz around the car spike this Spring.

Not being able to customize the new cars with a tune and the insane prices are what's killing the Mustangs. Ford's unfortunately lacking self awareness to realize this. They're being greedy with the price and they lost the point of what made the Mustang truly enjoyable for their enthusiasts. You said it, we don't want a ridiculous amount of tech and the Mustang to try and be something its not. My daily is a Golf GTI. I specifically bought a 2020 Mark 7.5 instead of the newer mark 8s with the all digital dash because I love seeing analog meters - tagging on what you said about the Shelby's not having digital dash's. I'd rather spend that kind of "24 Mustang" money on a nice 13-14 S197 and modify it like you did with Blucifer. Right now, I'm happy with my 2008 and putting some minor mods on it to make it "my own" for a total buy in for less than $20K and 33K miles when I bought it. If I ever get a newer one, it would be the 13-14.

I have a '24 base GT and got it for 43+K. I'd say it's not a bad price for what I got (considering the economy at the time). I took it to HPDEs last summer and had a lot of fun. But, it is extremely frustrating not being able to tune it. I installed the X-pipe, took out the carbon filters, and changed the air filters. I even Dremel'd out the grill in front of the air intakes to clear the path. I can't do anything else, except spend another 12K on a supercharger (all in) in order to bump the performance. That's insane. And, I don't have 12k. I emptied my bank account on the car itself. Sadly, I saw the same car for '25 is now 47k.

You have a good point with prices being way over the top right now but I don't think it's just limited to mustangs. I'd love to get into a mustang some day but I'm either gen 1 or gen 3 and both are actually holding their value simply cause of how bad the new ones are tanking

Most mustang drivers including myself appreciate the upgraded interior and tech the lead contributor to the failure to market is tuning and number the PRICE. Here in Texas you see a lot of younger enthusiast in their 20s driving 5.0s but these s650 are out of their price range. However the Shelbys were always for the older or more established consumer

As a gen 3 S550 GT owner with a full bolt on E85 tune on it, I will say it is, out of the gate, phenomenal. I do agree that the sales may be down because of the locked ecu’s but it might also have to do with the fact that these, out of factory, are just not it. Kinda like you said, the new tech in the car kind of defeats the rawness and classic Mustang enthusiasts experience. If your buying a Mustang it’s because your into the heritage and the long dating history of the Mustang chassis. This is trying too hard to modernize and fit in with the new “muscle car” debate. Let’s face it, with the way the market is shaping up to be now, your buying a Mustang because it’s the true American muscle, whether that is because it’s the only one left out of the three or because it’s just simply better, the name carries more respect than any other brand. If ford is watching this then it should be a wake up call. “Don’t fix what is not broken” and if the gen 3s were top sellers then give us the evolution of that. Sure, the minor changes are appreciated and I’ve been in the s650s and can truly say they are still a great car despite those lacking areas, but give the people what they know best and what we, as consumers, will be happy to jump into everyday with a smile on our face knowing we can go gap nearly any car of the same category with a simple tune and modifications

Uniontown ford in pa. Ordered a carbonized gray GT with the bronze package. It was one of the first 24’s to hit the lot in our area. And it is still setting there. It’s such a beautiful car I thought for sure it would have sold by now. Even though I don’t like the digital dashboard. I would still consider buying it if the price and interest rates weren’t so high.

I left Ford Mustang and Shelby American multiple emails, messages on instagram page, commnents trying to emphasize issues that could be improved with the new models, and I was banned from Shelby Americans ig page after my comment got enough spotlight, and Ford keeps ignoring me. We as consumers need to come together so we can keep this a true american icon for muscle cars, its important that Jim Farley can address the public on things that need improvement, and we if we can't get across to corporate then someone needs to advocate for us.

Darek your S650 is an awesome Mustang GT. The price was the #1 reason for the lower sales. However, the lack of tuning due to the locked ECU/ECM is contributing to the lower sales!!!! Ford needs to wake the heck up‼️‼️‼️The price for the 2025 S650 has climbed almost $4K above the 2024. Plus interest rates to finance a new Mustang is also killing sales!!!! You are gonna miss your White S650 when it is down in Florida. Plus if it is not garage kept the heat and salt will age the car very quickly. I lived in Florida and couldn’t wait to get out of FL after 8 years. Many reasons to not live in Florida. South Carolina and North Carolina and Tennessee are much better weather to live and survive throughout the year. Miss your Mach I Brother!!! 👍👊💪🐎🇺🇸😎

Great video, I own a S650 and love it, and most of the guys I know that have them enjoy them also. But that being said when folks talk to me about them the first thing they mention is the price. Everything is increasing in price hell look at the price of eggs. Be able to tune may have boosted sales slightly but there still would've been a decline in sales. Me what I think hurt sales is that a lot of orders were put on hold because couldn't get some options they wanted. Not saying it would've jumped 10,000 sales but quite a few folks still don't have cars they ordered. Just my Two cents, keep up the great content.

Everyone complaining about the price you do know bmw M sold over 200k cars last year right ? Those are 70k-90k cars. Pricing has nothing to do with it it’s just the fact you can’t modify them and if you decide to you only have whipple/roush. It’s just simply you can make 700-800 on a bmw with downpipe/tune+E50

i think bmw sales are higher because people kinda realize what’s the best bang for their buck. These prices are quite similar “why am i spending $70k on a regular 5.0 instead of an M3?” I’d buy a bmw too if it were the same price as a mustang and it’s not even a gt500 for how much they want. I’d much rather drop $60k+ on a bmw than a regular 5.0 with no tuning, etc.. But i do agree on the no tuning part, it’s a turn off for sure

I think you could make a case for tuning if most people buying these modded their cars. They don’t. Most folks who buy them want a big block V8 to cruise around in on the daily. The price I think is a bigger factor, but perhaps more than that, the car just isn’t different enough from the previous generation to get people excited. Ford wasn’t ambitious in its exterior redesign. Sure, it’s edgier, but to the casual eye the 2024 is just another Mustang.

my biggest thing as a dark horse owner is the fact that the interior rattles are horrible. for a 2024 with 1700 miles on it, the car rattles more than my 35 year old Miata with 200k on it. Idk if it’s just personal experience or not but it’s making me want to get rid of it already.

@robn_outdoors

I'm glad you mentioned the pricing cause that's a huge part of the failure. Tuning is a niche community whereas most will do an intake and exhaust and call it a day. Others might add suspension and wheels. Full bolt-on and tuning is a small percentage. The ridiculous prices of vehicles today is the biggest problem. Ford trucks and Broncos exceeding $80K is insane and they have lost me entirely. Therefore, I'll watch your awesome content and remember the days of my '89 GT with full bolt-ons and my '04 Mach 1 that I enjoyed so much. No chance I'm buying anything new. I make good money but between payments, insurance, and VA PP Tax it just makes no sense when it wouldn't be my daily. I do agree that tuning being unlocked would result in more sales. Maybe 5,000 more units or so.

It's across the board inflation. What actually needs to happen is the government needs to step in. Either enforce market caps on products, or enforce employers to pay more without jacking up the prices. Seems like all these companies forgot people need to make enough money too be able buy their products and services.

I don't think it's an inability to make modifications that are hurting the Mustang. Sales haven't been consistently above 100k units since 2007. From 2007 to 2014, they went from 1035k to 82k. Sales increased in 2015 to 122k, but then have been on a steady downward slide since then. In fact, in 2022, sales were 47.6k - just 400 units higher than 2024. Whatever is happening to the Mustang has been happening for a while.

It's definitely tuning. People keep saying it's price, but it's not. The 2015 mustang was 32k in 2015 which is 43k adjust for inflation same price as it is now. Being able to easily mod, upgrade, and tune, mustangs along with people seeming to like the fastback look better than the Camaro was a big reason it was popular. It's the reason BMWs are blowing up. They're easy to make on with a couple upgrades even though the cars themselves are more expensive
