As a songwriter who occasionally writes songs for others, #ImagineDragons are often brought up as the desired sound the artist or client would like to achieve. Why? They get billions of views and one of the most successful groups at the moment, but is their songwriting all its crack to be? Let's discuss. Tell me what you think in the comments, I reply to them and appreciate them!

I do like Imagine Dragons, though a lot of that is down to my 10 Yr old daughter having found them, introduced them to me, and now we sing along together in the car. It's the shared experience that I love. She could have found any one of a hundred bands and I'd be saying the same thing (I'm a fan of The Darkness, I wish she found them!) but maybe it's because Imagine Dragons are easy to get in to?

Yeah, I "liked" them when my kids were into them. They put on a pretty good show- lots of cool positivity plus their support of the LGBTQ community in spite of some of them being mormon, but I couldn't put my finger on the missing component. It wasn't until about a year ago when I figured it out that they were the new coldplay. Nice sounding songs, but I have no idea of what the song is really about.

This is actually something that really frustrates me. When they consider bands that are 99% Pop as a Rock Band and they keep winning or getting in the Rock charts. Sounds silly but at the same time, there are so many Rock bands out there that could use some more recognition idk. Maybe you just have to look as a "Rocker" and therefore you are a Rock artist, who knows?

When they first came out, I purchased their first album before a road trip. After listening to the album on the way, I seriously considered whether or not to put the cd back in the case or whip it out the window. Every song sounded the same like they'd pressed it with some generic Cookie Cutter. Personally Imagine dragons have just gone on a downward trajectory, whereas their sales went the opposite. I love their first album, genuinely one of my top 5 fav albums of the last decade or so. They were more melodic and just did them. Second album was good, had a lot of meaning and probably the best writing lyrically, still not Shakespeare though. And a lot of nothings songs around some really heartfelt ones. Very much about the reaction of the fame that came with success of the first album. Since then, I’ve enjoyed a a few songs but it’s very obvious they’ve gone ‘right, this is our formula that works to sell records’ and was all just a bit commercial. So much so that I haven’t listened to their latest album more than once, and only knew of the song you reviewed because of tiktok.

Came here to say this. Smoke and mirrors grew into my favorite album by them, especially with the deluxe tracks Warrior and Battlecry. (Wow maybe Justin Is onto something with the violence theme) That record had way more complexity and creativity than their recent stuff. They were never a top band for me but I never considered them rock either, which always made me laugh when people got butthurt about them. I’d dub them “arena pop”.
@adainjarrio
@adainjarrio 2 жыл бұрын
@@iLitTheSun Definitely not a Rock band. I think giving them a genre is difficult because their music doesn't sound like anything specific. I just call it Melancholic Music and as long as they keep making that the band will only ever be good but not great. My thoughts with S+M on first hearing it was that this band was going to be incredible, creativity that we haven't seen in so long but alas. I love Evolve and it's a great album in a bubble but for a band going for greatness it's the end of their best period. They're now stuck in limbo. Which is a shame because they're all talented musicians. A band like Royal Blood on the other hand has a perfect 3 first albums and they're definitely Rock and a bit underrated in my opinion.

It's just something about them, especially live, they seem to really enjoy what they are doing, and you can hear that in their songs. Justin , please don’t over analyse imagine dragons. This is a kiddie rock-pop group that are mildly successful. If you happen to get a punch in the nose , it will be their inability to accept their mundanity. Not your critique of it!

My 7 year old son got me into Imagine Dragons. 😆 The lead singer suffers from chronic back pain issues and I think that what the song Believer is about. As always, another great video Justin.

I’m not a big fan of them but I always thought their overemphasis on percussion to where it overpowers basically everything else in the mix is a pretty unique approach. Smoke and Mirrors is also a really interesting album and probably their only good one, with the mixing of middle eastern influences and scales into American pop music

I’m not the biggest fan of Imagine Dragons however, I do have to say that the genre of music they make, fits perfectly with what it’s being made for. They’ve done a few songs specifically with a project in mind. The enemy song is the intro for the Arcane series on Netflix and the audience that Arcane is targeted at does dictate the type of music that they would make. I think they’ve almost become a band that makes music for projects rather than just for the sake of making music.

I was thinking the same. If you're gonna judge a song's meaning and reason of existence, you cannot ignore the context for which it was commissioned. The undecided chorus of Enemy makes perfect sense when one considers the protagonists in Arcane.

I don’t actually dislike the song, I just point out areas that I think would elevate it to “classic”. I like the 2 cord hybrid scale approach, that’s pretty cool.

You're right! Imagine Dragons have done a lot of work with Riot Games to create poppy singles to support the release of their products for a few years now. the "Arcane" series itself comes from Riot's League Of Legends game universe. One of the members of Imagine Dragons plays League Of Legends and did a lot of promotion for the game and the championships a few years ago. They did the "Warriors" single back in 2017/8 as a tie in for the world championships in Asia. If they wrote the song for the arcane show exclusively, then the lyrics may well be in the context of the characters from the show/game. unfortunately if you're not familiar with the minute of the game world that Riot have come up with, its understandable that you're not going to translate well into the pandemic stricken music charts of 2021. Not that I am defending Imagine Dragons.... I find their music to be tedious and pretty much a perfect example of the sort of self congratulatory nepotism in an industry that is profiting from the 75 million records sales by sanitizing creativity for "what sells to the 18-30 demographic". I just thought it was worth adding some context to the points you made for the uninitiated

And a thing about the believer lyrics in the third verse their is this line all the hate that you heard has turned your spirit into a devil which is about a friend of dan Reynolds ( the singer ) who committed suicide and he was like a very good fighter and all the people were like oh so you are really so tough and he often got into fights because of that

Sorry, but the drop (for want of a better word) in Believer makes me tingle. "Speaking my lesson from the brain. Seeing the beauty through the... Pain!" And then. " you break me down, you build me up, believer, believer..." Then drops a minor third (I think) and bends up on "pain"

I'd love for you to review anything by the wonderful Mike Keneally... Or maybe by some of the incredible pop/rock/metal which came out of Japan where guitar solo's still get airplay afaik!... Love the video and your opinions. BUT I believe there is a reason for "They tell you you're the greatest but once you turn they hate us" - and you hit the nail on the head with your comment about having two different people writing the lyric. The main character of the TV show which this song was written for, has issues with split personality. That's why it actually fits the character really well, in my opinion.

I think Justine is quite right about Imagine Dragons, their music conveys testosterone and not that much more. That means that their songs are pretty good when loud on the earpods while lifting weights, but not when you want to appreciate emotional nuance within a piece of art. Different situations require different music.

My 12-year-old daughter has loved Imagine Dragons for a couple of years now. I think they can craft a catchy pop song, but I do consider them, more than anything, a children's band. That said, I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
