My understanding is that labels often remaster well-known catalog recordings to constitute a "re-release" which can reset the clock on the age of the copyright. This means the label (or the copyright holder of the master recording) will retain that ownership for another 75 years or whatever before it goes into the public domain. There are often technological considerations like the one you mentioned (new mediums for listening to music, better technology, etc), but when you see 27 different remasters of the same Beatles, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Miles Davis, et al records, it's very often a financial consideration.

Firstly, I confess to being a big fan of TS so may be biased here... she did take a stand against Spotify and Apple Music about making sure that all artists regardless of streaming volumes are properly paid. On the topic of her ex label stiffing her, I think we have to remember she was 13 when she was first signed. Also in light on some of the comments already here and to clarify she didn't lose out on bidding for her masters. They were sold behind her back after expressing that she'd like to purchase them herself. The label only offered her a chance to earn back her masters one album at a time for every new album she put out which she turned down for obvious reasons as that's basically extortion. The real genius move is adding previously unreleased material with the new albums, which guarantees fans new and old will check out the re-records.

Taylor's back catalogue went up for option and her ex-management company outbid her on it. She's re-recording all her previous records to populate her approved copies in place of the originals, adding unreleased material and changing artwork so she deservedly gets any sales from new fans exploring older albums. Can you imagine Black Sabbath re-recording their 1970 debut, even as close as a couple of years later!? There's no way the magic of that record would stay, it was basically their live set with some 8 track enabled overdubs.

I read Taylor is a heroine in the music biz for getting musicians paid directly and not to their record company accounts; regarding any payments coming from the sale of equities record companies were given from streaming services such as Spotify. It means rather than the money go into a record company account and pay off debt and the musician still be left with nothing, the musician can actually cash the cheques themselves and keep the money. And why did fledgling Spotify give record companies free equity in their companies? Simple.. to gain cheap access to all of their back catalogue and stream them all to us for an artificially low price. (Thus paying musicians extremely poorly for use of their product.) Ps Spotify owner Daniel Ek is now worth 4.2 billion.

A remaster is just newly mastered, not re-recorded or (usually) not remixed. Usually it's a bit louder if nothing else, since the technology has improved a ton since, say, the 80's. For re-recorded songs, it would say something different. Spotify labels the new versions "revised version".

Remastering should be exactly what you said, where it's just mastered to suit the current music technology for listening. I suppose any other shenanigans such as re-recording will be seperate things and so any licences go to the people who worked on / own those new ones. I suppose the wording of my record contract 'Exclusive Exploitation Agreement' says everything about how the music industry works but like everyone else I am dazzled by it and dived in regardless.

I remember how The Enid (Brit Prog Rock) fought for years to get their masters, and ended up getting some back and rerecording some of their back catalogue back in the mid 80s, releasing it on their own cottage industry label, with different different cover art, band line up, and sometimes musical rearrangements and song titles were slightly changed. On the plus side, I own the lot, original and rereleased, and it is kind of great to own two "alternate universe" back catalogues of the same band.
