Thanks for sharing and I'm sorry that happened to you. There's a study with dolls that started in 1940 where black and white kids choose a black or white doll. Statistically most of the black kids chose white dolls. When asked to describe the dolls, they felt the black dolls were "bad" and negative things and the white dolls were "good", "nice". Where do kids learn this behavior? I think it's society, media, inaccurate representation in media. Even if Shane didn't mean to make black/poc feel bad, I'm sure he did. As a survivor of CSA, trying to normalise inappropriate things toward minors, is a form of grooming. It is classic behaviour. By ' normalizing' abuse, they desensitize there target. And those around there target. They create a narrative that it is fine. And in so doing, make it easy to victimize children. By joking about it does the same purposes. And lets them see how far they can go in there grooming. To see if they can get away with things now, or if they still have to work on there target. It also builds a scenario, that if they ever slip up in the future. If they say something that is a red flag, and makes some of the people around them question there intent, because they have built the groundwork of being a jokster about inapropriate things toward children. If anyone might question it, they have built a foundation that they 'just make crud jokes all the time '. It is all parts of the child sexual predator handbook. But every one of these behaviors he exhibits, is common in child predators.

I think the problem with the question “how did this go unchecked for so long” is that it didn’t. It’s just that the people who have been calling him out for years have been ignored and silenced. They’ve been harassed off of multiple platforms by his rabid stans. Some of these people were black women, and I think that’s an important component. He’s not surprised by any of this coming out, because it’s come out again and again. It’s just that until now it’s been ignored, accepted, and at times even celebrated. He made money from this offensive, evil content. He built his fan base around it. And until now, that fan base has protected him from criticism. This has always been who he was, and none of it was a secret. But he’s a white man who knows how to manipulate an audience, and his critics were mostly marginalized people with smaller platforms, and people chose to ignore his issues because something about him seemed “nice” or “likable” to them. However, I would reply by saying that it does. By being friends with people who have done racist, sexist, homophobic, pedophilic, misogynistic things, you are basically condoning what they have done. By continuing to surround yourself with people who do those things, you are saying that what they have done doesn't bother you enough, or isn't bad enough, for you to separate yourself from them. I just want to say that as a black person who has been Terminally Online for decades, the general rhetoric of the internet was very racist until sometime in the last 5-7 years. Many were conditioned to be accepting of as edgy of content as one could create. I used to post my art online but I was terrified of being identified as black as a kid because I was nervous that people would just onslaught me with n-words. That's kinda how it was and that's the climate which Shane entered with his content so it's not surprising it was so awful. The only thing that is surprising is that he managed to make such a lengthy career out of being a KZbin star, whereas many people doing the same kind of content faded into obscurity or are doing something behind-the-scenes instead.

Unfortunately there are many that hold racist views and they may avoid saying or supporting that in real life out of fear of social backlash but the internet offers a degree of anonymity so people were more comfortable taking part in it online. Now more awareness is being raised and Internet culture is shifting somewhat. Unfortunately I do not think that will end racism. Racist people will still be racist in private but it is satisfying to see people who used the internet as a platform for spreading hate because of the lack of backlash get what’s coming to them in terms of demonetization, loss of fans, and general social outrage at their actions.

I feel like "wokeness", for lack of a better word, became very popular in the last five years or so; but young people don't have an idea how widespread was problematic behaviour in the internet before. Shock humor was considered edgy, as you say; using any kind of slur or word that you werent supposed to be used was seen as being a rebel by a huge mass of white teens, and also by some minority kids. I feel like everyone is rightly outraged by things that are shitty, but were normalized at the time, and while I love that we have reached the point that problematic behaviour is called out; I worry that thiscan be some sort of momentary enthusiasm. That many people are following what tehy perceive to be normal without deeper analysis. And maybe in a few years it will be "trendy" to be offensive again

One of my biggest problems with Shane is how he uses mental health as a scapegoat to take any accountability or responsibility for his actions. I am a licensed therapist. I would not allow that to be an excuse for my patients, and he doesn’t get some kind of free pass. Trauma and mental health are not excuses for being manipulative and hurtful. They might help explain why those actions are a first impulse. Shane has the resources to deal with his issues and learn ways to curb his impulses and choose better ways of responding. We all must be accountable for our actions. When I started my recovery journey from my addiction, I had to be accountable for the damage my addiction caused. Yes, my addiction was fueled by my mental health issues and trauma. But, that wasn’t an excuse for the damage I did to people. It’s hard and it’s humbling. However, the more excuses are made for him, the less he will really learn. We are actually doing him a disservice when we don’t hold him accountable. ❤️🌈

I watched Shane a lot as a kid, especially his Podcast. I remember watching some of the clips that have come out *the ones from his podcast* and I feel as if those 'jokes' have had a long term impact on my life. Jokes like that desensitized my younger self to such disturbing topics, and now many years later I still feel guilty for the 'jokes' I made. I made these jokes to shock my classmates because I thought it was funny, and then used Shane Dawson and other KZbinrs as excuses for my bad behavior. I don't think Shane truly thought about the consequences of what he was saying, and that has dangerous effects when you're a person with a platform. I, as a kid, did not think about how much pain is caused by sexual assault and pedophilia instead I thought it was something to laugh at, something that almost wasn't real. I soon learned what I did was wrong, and I still feel guilty to this day. I think what we need to take from this is that content creators need to learn (a lot do, but the ones that don't) how impactful their words/ actions are. I don't think making 'offensive' jokes are necessarily a bad thing, but before they're said there must be a process by which people think the joke might seriously hurt someone, or enable someone's bad behavior.
@amandasky51984 жыл бұрын
you probably feel more guilty than shane feels and that's unfortunate. he had sooo much influence over children's minds at the age where they were super impressionable and want to copy anyone they look up to. it's just so disturbing on so many levels.

@chrisindie4 жыл бұрын
I generally agree with what you said, except for the part " I don't think making 'offensive' jokes are necessarily a bad thing". Offensive jokes towards a marginalized group, is always bad, as it serves its purpose to normalize and further push oppression towards that group of people. So yes, they have always been malicious and will continue to be until people realize that and start calling out those who make those "jokes". For everything else I agree, especially about the part on the responsibility of the creators and the influence they have especially over very young audience, who usually don't still have critical thinking, in order to filter the trash out.

I personally disagree. When people say “the humor was different ten years ago” it’s because it was. Doesn’t mean it was right, just means that people around him, including his followers were completely okay with it and in fact enabled him. And now the same people are turning on him, knowing very well that back then they thought the humor was edgy/shocking. Aren’t we all growing as a society? Aren’t we supposed to bring about personal change and reform within ourselves too? Why bash a public figure who has time and again apologized for his past actions and SHOWN that he has astronomically changed as a person through his more contemporary videos? Does a 10 minute compilation of the most horrible clips taken from thousands of hours worth of footage over the past 10+ years accurately define him as a person? If so, then i don’t have faith in compassion or a chance for growth anymore.

I recently discovered he made a movie and was a part of a documentary series called, “The Chair,” and seeing him in both was a huge eye opener. Not only did he make such an awful, crass, edgy movie but he was the WORST KIND OF PERSON TO WORK WITH. Though his insecurities and way of thinking are relatable and understanding (his fear of being judged on how he looks, weight/image issues, low self esteem, wanting to branch out from his KZbin box but being stuck with it at the same time) he wasn’t helpful, he refused to collaborate, whined and complained all the time, and basically gaslighted the production once they all spoke out about how awful he was to work with. Worst of all, once it came to hiring actors for the movie, barely anyone auditioned because they saw how crass the script was. People on set we’re talking about how one look at his channel, Shane Dawson TV, was enough for them to know how homophobic, racist, and offensive his content was. It’s surreal... and it makes me wonder why I never bothered to look for his old content.... I knew he existed way back then in old KZbin land but I never watched it. And he made it seem like it wasn’t worth checking out his old stuff so who cares, he’s a “different person now,” but... I don’t know if anyone can make a huge personality change like that and not still hold onto some of it now. I’m all about forgiving and wanting people to grow from mistakes but this is going to take a huge reflection on his part. He hasn’t even properly apologized for everything and like you said, he was still profiting from all this until just recently. He needs to stop being so reactive, drop all of the friends that aren’t helping him and talking sense into him, and really properly apologize and reflect.

4:19 Like LovelytiTV said in her stream people (majority black) have been warning ppl and hold SD accountable for *10 years*. I remember when the Williow Smith clip 1st came out, the small black channels that I followed dragged him for filth only for his fans to flag their videos for "bullying" and the majority of the comments saying "what can't you take a joke?". My, My, My, Have the tables turned and it was a memorable moment cause that was one of my 1st interactions with toxic fandoms. When SD and JS did the collab it wasn't a surprise since IMO they and their fans are one and the same it's just that to rest of the world SD knows how to hide his bigotry in plain sight. But LovelytiTV made a good point in her stream, It's a lot easier to dismiss racial issues as a joke and come at people saying they're being too sensitive but that s a lot harder to do with the pedophilic subject. Every joke has a little bit of truth but one thing for certain is that all the OG black KZbinrs who helped Shane from the very beginning of his channel only to be stabbed in the back when they in turn needed help are feeling vindicated. Molly is such a kind person. I met her at her fort worth meet and greet back in November. I'm happy that she got the exposure she did from the series they did together. But knowing what I know now about Shane and even how he has portrayed disabled, and blind people specifically (see his very bad movie, "not cool" and Lisa Shwartz's character). She likely would not be okay with it. She is a part of a group that Shane has made extremely offensive jokes about. She should speak out, but I don't think that she will. I don't think that she would want to involve her self in the repercussions of that considering, she unknowingly gained a massive following from a man with such a disgusting past. So much of the work that she does is to debunk harmful stereotypes of blind and visually impaired people setforth by people such as Shane Dawson. If she doesn't want to talk about it, as a victim of his harmful caricatures, she has the right to stay silent if she wishes.

The thing from this whole situation that seems to be missing is - where are all of Shanes long-time viewers who actually saw this stuff when it came out? Are they ashamed that they weren't offended at the time? Why have we not heard from a single person who watched the content back then?
@camilleviolet44114 жыл бұрын
@@_SunscreenQueen_ exactly, when you're young you don't necessarily get why those things are so wrong or really know how to take them. i was never a big fan but the true nature of his content didn't really register with me. in a way that makes what he did so much worse, because it normalises those things to young people who then think it's okay to act that way or believe those stereotypes about different races etc.

Brittany Holder me too, looking back now I’m honestly shocked I even watched it. I do not remember it being like that but I was also in middle school and pretty sure 80% of those “jokes” just flew right over my head

I really would love to hear other long-time viewers of Shane on why they supported him in the past. I've been mulling over this exact question in my head ever since these recent videos of him resurfaced because I was a fan of him 2008 - 2010. I was 12-14 at the time and I loved his comedy sketches but at a certain point I realized that I started to get annoyed by his content. For a long time I continued to watch his daily vlogs because it was sort of an addiction. He really grew on me so it was difficult to cut him off so abruptly, however around the time when he made videos with shanna Malcom, Lauren schnipper and others I felt that his 'jokes' were too much for me: they were obnoxious, disgusting, over-the-top, extremely repetitive and therefore predictable. I was not part of any marginalized group so the 'jokes', which were targeted against these people, did not truly offend me and that is why I didn't see them as hurtful towardsl me as an individual. Of course, now I understand how problematic his content was. On my part, I saw a huge decline in quality of his videos comedy-wise. Basically I saw how unintelligent he was. Either it was of bad quality or I simply grew out of it or both. This is how I can explain why I supported him at the time, and stopped supporting him back then. It baffles me how he rose to the top despite his horrible content. and it has always frustrated me that he rarely got any criticism since he had this fake 'nice guy' persona.

I watched a few back then and found it distasteful and stopped watching him till he did these docuseries and chopped it to he was young and was trying to shock people like comedians will do and didn't realize he still had those videos and now I think his greed is despicable

Yes. And as much of his fanbase was children, I do remember him being promoted by other adult youtubers in his early days. KZbin was different then, but a lot of those people are still online making content of one kind or another.

“Why is all this stuff just coming out now🙄?” Because it is NO LONGER acceptable to be passive about racism. It is not enough to “not be racist”, we have to be anti-racist. Many POC have BEEN telling you guys that Shane’s content was inappropriate, it is just now that many of y’all are choosing to pay attention to it. Listen to POC.

20:17 - No. KZbin wasn't as big as it is now - but KZbin was not this tiny thing. People were making money and careers off KZbin back in the day as well, OG KZbin is how MakeupGeek's Marlena was able to start her business. NOWHERE NEAR what it is now, but Shane was able to improve his life significantly via the fanbase/money he had which was primarily young kids and teenagers. That's who followed him - kids. He made "shock comedy", people still make shock comedy on YT today, the goal then and now is to be as offensive as humanly possible and kids - who don't have the maturity, historical or cultural context to know just how wrong these jokes were laughed along or were uncomfortable and were bullied into silence if they questioned it.

Shane: I’m an empath and I have anxiety, so please forgive me for being friends with J* and TP. Me: I’m an empath and I have anxiety, and that actually gives me more empathy for people that I don’t know, and is the exact reason that I’m not friends with people who act like J* and TP.

When they say “I’ve already apologized for this” it’s true BUT they only apologized for specific things that resurfaced in that moment and have been pointed out by other people otherwise they wouldn’t say anything. It’s better to apologize for EVERYTHING, show every problematic thing you have done, why it was wrong and own up to it. Also when people say “stop being sensitive, it was a joke, it was a long time ago”, as someone who has experienced racism and has been the joke of every friend group I’ve had just for the color of my skin, seeing these people say these offensive things as “jokes” gets tiring and annoying and they are also influencing their younger fans to thinks it’s ok to say as a joke. I’ve distanced myself from many friends who see it as harmless to make “jokes” about me for being black. It’s a problem, Shane doesn’t have to be “cancelled”, just held accountable. Please don’t accept the apologies if it’s not meant for you.

I've watched Shane since i was about 11, and I think that's exactly why a lot of people never checked him on anything. Most of us frankly grew up watching him, his "jokes" were normalized for us, a majority of us, so no one saw it as a problem.

When you described Shane as a shady guy, stirring the pot behind the scenes..... an image of him as Rumplestiltskin on Shrek came to mind. Dreamworks called it 10 years ago.

I was watching youtube when shane was first starting out in like 2007-2009 - I was a preteen at the time. I remember thinking his humour was "gross" (about as nuanced a take as 12-yr-old me could have) and I specifically remember it made me very very uncomfortable so I didn't watch his channel regularly. I remember on his videos there were a lot of comments in support of him, but also a lot of comments saying his humour was offensive. So it wasn't "just how jokes were at the time". As an adult, I never revisited his content but any time people would talk about how great he is I'd remember how uncomfortable his content made me when I was a kid and how over the top explicit it was, and I couldn't really remember specifics of stuff he said but whenever he'd receive praise it would always make me uneasy. I'm honestly surprised I didn't remember how offensive his content actually was - I think I just always clicked out of his videos so fast.
@katropolis90554 жыл бұрын
I've always thought he was a pervert. It didn't click at the time because Tana's always looked older than she is, but they did a video when she was still 17 and he was all in her face and begging her to spit in his mouth... I'm 17 now and I'm honestly disgusted. He also encouraged her to pee on him and was clearly satisfied by it. Just... gross.

Even if he claims to be woke, even if he has actually changed, he is still friends with Jeffree Star, who is publicly racist etc. He can't be anti-racist if he's friends with a racist (even without this I'd argue he's not anti-racist). I don't fully support Tati but him calling her manipulative in that live was so bs, his documentary/commercial for his palette was him saying he was poor, and saying he'd been screwed over by merch companies etc etc, to make his young fans feel by buying the palette, they were helping a struggling guy
@jacqibonner84074 жыл бұрын

“Why are you still friends with j*” yaaaas million dollar question, that will show his integrity moving forward. How can he be friends with all of those terrible people that have repeatedly shown they aren’t good people. It’s a shame. I get he feels bad for them but at this point he is enabling them be act like that which in a way is him endorsing their behavior.
