@Mary Ray NPD really isn't something you can diagnose someone with when you only have a small window into their personality and life and that window is up to interpretation. I'd view masking as a normal coping mechanism to create emotional distance, for instance. For whatever it's worth, I've dealt with people who have NPD and nothing she's really done thus far screams narcissism to me. I used to watch Tati almost every day during this time and I’m not entirely sure when I stopped, but I remember just finding so much joy in her content back then. It felt very genuine and I can’t think of any product I bought because of her that didn’t work out for me. It was just so fun and makeup focused and a thing to escape to when everything else was kinda all over the place.

I will say that Tati being very professional and treating KZbin like a job rather than a hobby or passion from the start is not a negative thing at all and I honestly really respect the level of professionalism and work ethic she put in from the beginning. She was more consistent and less messy than the gurus who claimed they did it as a passion only and not for money. And besides, she had to have some sort of love for it to make it her full time job and upload so much, especially if editing was difficult for her. I think people still really equate someone doing KZbin as solely a job from the beginning as a negative thing or a reason not to trust them, and I don’t think that’s a fair connotation. I think Tati was a very smart business woman and an ethical and fair KZbinr up until The Scandal, lol.

From what Tati herself said, I feel like she was courting Shane to have him document her as a kind and wonderful person. She was willing to push her friend, a very young man, under the bus in order to please Shane, if her version of the story is correct. Nothing she did there said smart business woman or ethical person, especially when she said she was scared that James Charles might become suicidal and she still posted the video. I agree with you. This appears like a very biased take. Hannah had pre conceived notions / prejudiced that she can't seem to let go. Though she sprinkles in woke words like ageism etc, some of the criticism that she voiced out are just her narrative. You can hold the fact that Tati's videos were of a certain quality right from the start against her . Perhaps she takes pride in her work and wants to have the best version out there. Also, her not wanting to have brand codes - maybe she did not approve of that constant shilling. Why must that be read as a shrewd move?

I’d love an evolution on a creator of color. Jackie Aina is a great OG. I think the evolution series is a good reminder that every person has some flaws or issues that will eventually come to light. They may not be big issues but everyone has someone. Ex: Oprah, Ellen, and yes, even KZbinrs. KZbinrs are everyday people creating content, usually without any business or social media training. The ones who start young are particularly worrying to me because there’s no training in business, social media and they don’t have the life experience to deal with the fact that social media is forever and very public.

But, what I do wonder is how the hell does someone like Jeffree Star get away with practically the most horrible stuff (I mean, I wouldn't be suprised if he killed someone and fans still want him to be online), but the Bye Sister-scandal happens and Tati is done with? Is it because she's a woman? (Just Like Laura Lee, who we've never heard from again) or was this scandal too big? Because I don't think so, if Shane Dawson is able to be coming back, why not her? I think because of their audience. Most of Tati's fanbase is women who are in their 20's later on. She had this clean, not problematic, profesional image. Jeffre and Shane have always had a problematic image, specially Jeffre from MySpace days. The thing that ruined her image was that James Charles had evidence while she had none and took time off.

The personality she had built is one of a honest and professional one. I doubt her audience would be able to get back to watching her after all that. She can potentially come back after she comes clean instead of passing blame. It would court her favor and after all, she's good at reviewing stuffs and doing make up. Jeffree and Shane are known problematic people and somehow these entertains their fans. The image they are selling is that of a problematic one and an audience flocked on it.

Tati was always such a constant part of my routine. I’d come home from high school/uni every afternoon to a new video to watch every day. Watching this “downfall” has been rough. I truly do think she had good intentions and was genuinely in it for the makeup, but I think her problem is she’s too defensive. Like you said, youtube was always something more serious for her, so I think she took any judgment to her character too personally, hence resorting to that narrative of being honest and transparent with us.

She's my only "problematic youtuber" fav. I like that she's "older" because I'm in my 30s so her content is a lot more relatable to me and her lifestyle is more aspirational to me than younger youtubers who are still in school or they're still trying to establish themselves as adults. I didn't like how she pushed woo products (like vitamins) but that stuff was easy to skip. I enjoy her drugstore review videos and you can tell she actually goes out and scouts these products herself (like mentioning products only found at Sally Beauty Supply, which isn't your typical YT beauty guru store). Idk I'm hoping she can "overcome" this shit and come back and make content again. I have a hole in my youtuber playlist now.

That is not what happened with the Emily palette. She said she loved the color story, but some of the shades weren’t blending properly. She even said that perhaps she had a bad palette. @simplyrowen4 жыл бұрын
Wow. I didn’t know Mel did that. That almost sounds like done on purpose? I have a small insta account and I give products that get sent to me or I buy a fair chance. It’s rare for me to give a “trash” stamp on a product. Because a lot of times it’s technique, the brushes I used, my skin that day, etc. But when I have an initial bad experience, I go on trying for a month, and there’s things that took me that long to figure out and then I loved them. I can give my followers a thorough run down and let them decide if something is for them. I saw Tati’s review and it seemed very fair to me. She did point out the things she liked and then she said that it wasn’t working all that great for her but that she’d “continue to play with it and see” which is what I’d say and do myself. I wouldn’t say I love it just because it’s Emily Noel. That drama to me seemed so unnecessary and it truly disgusted me see grown women behaving like mean girls over something so trivial.

Absolutely. I don't think it's a morally good or bad strategy (like what she pointed out here, Tati could use this fact to her advantage), it was just smart.
@lalam38773 жыл бұрын
I think the issue with it (her business move to not do sponsorships) wasn't her being honest to who she really is. Because according to the research done in this video her audience never really knew who Tati was because she treated her videos very professionally. Therefore her true personality was still a mystery. She portrayed herself as a professional. Key word "portrayed". But we find out who she really is later through scandals and see part of it when she throws her " portrayals" in her audience faces. Its seen as Shady. She purposely acted and filmed only what she wanted her audience to see her as. It's manipulative. It's a watch this hand while my other hand does other things behind my back that you can't see. It's suspicious. It was definitely a smart but manipulative move. She knew what she was doing. Her viewers got played. Well most of them. I saw it when the little dramas began and when a few of her reviews were just jabs at some companies and not entirely honest. And her fake calm voice she used to seem of solid and grounded and sound mind. I lost a little t of respect for her when she portrayed herself as the constant victim in every situation. It was really hard to watch her crocodile tears over her dragged out videos about the dramas she found herself in. Everything had a consequence, she knew that but she got arrogant.

I was a person that had never heard of Tati before Bye Sister. I have to say, from this video, she is a very intelligent person. She made miscalculations, absolutely. But in terms of what she was able to do, not posting in months and still sitting at 9 million subscribers, still having people on her old videos saying that they miss her and wish she would post again, I think that speaks to not only her work ethic, but a serious and meaningful connection with her audience. After watching a couple of her videos, I also have to say that, while she can come across as an above it all type of person (I didn't get that vibe but can totally see how other people could), she also comes across as someone who knows what they are talking about. Probably because she did. Even with all of the drama, the majority of people I've connected with online say she was good at her job. She uploaded consistently. She told you what was good and what wasn't. Her views were for the most part reliable. Will you miss one or two? Sure. Not everything works for everybody. Tati had said in the past that youtubers should support each other and that she wouldn't do a negative review of a KZbinr product. The video for Emily's palette started out immediately negative. Maybe something in her personal life was bothering her, but it doesn't matter. Then she proceeded to do a negative review of a youtuber's product after saying she wouldn't. And Emily has been doing youtube longer and has definitely been a drama free person the entire time. So of all people to drag, Tati picked Emily. Not nice. Kiki was mean-spirited in her review sure but it was in someone's defense. Then Tati, with her millions of followers, went after Kiki in a video saying Kiki does all these horrible things. It was very weird and very much an overreaction. Like saying Kiki is a bad person for swearing? What?!!

@@EllieBellie_111 Did you even watch Tati’s video? First of all, just because Emily is a fellow youtuber doesn’t mean her product can’t be critiqued and we all know Tati would not lie about a product review. Look at it how you want, but bringing up someone’s infertility over a fucking eyeshadow palette is not ok. In Tati’s response video to Kiki, she literally never once even brought personal beef into the situation, but called out Kiki’s blatantly hypocrisy and put her in her place; she even talked about the pros of Emily’s palette and acknowledges she might have gotten a defective product (bc Emily tweeted that there had been some). Also, Tati never called Kiki a bad person for swearing I don’t know how you made that up.

I want to preface this by saying that I’m in no way a Tati Stan, in fact a lot of her recent behaviour has been very disappointing. However, and I mean this with the utmost respect, I personally don’t think that the point (which seemed to be used to criticize her slightly) that she saw KZbin as more of a business venture than Just for passion and the conspiracy that she invested in her subscribers trust by being super honest so that she has credibility with her own brand isn’t a bad thing at all? Maybe I’m wrong but I don’t see it as a bad thing at all if she saw it solely as a source of income? In fact, Tati has talked multiple times about how she admits that yes KZbin is her job and it’s how she makes money and how no one should feel ashamed for wanting to make money. In fact she said she loves money and more women should feel comfortable saying that. I really loved that message. I don’t see her POV as her being “fake” just because she was trying to make money. Like Jackie Aina once said, KZbin’s shouldn’t be expected to spend hours and hours consistently uploading content and investing in expensive filming equipment and do it for free. For example, just because we are aware that a car salesman is doing this job just for money and not because he’s so incredibly passionate about selling cars, it doesn’t mean we won’t buy a car from him. Anyway, just a thought. I really appreciate how much work you put in the video! It was great and I love these videos... keep them coming!

Of course one of the reasons she did all of this was to make money, but I don’t see that as a bad thing. I found through a little Googling a Reddit thread from a few years ago of people complaining about Tati posting videos that weren't upfront about them basically being product ads. And if Smokey Glow's suspicions are mostly true, in particular the one held by many others that Tati's cancel attempt of whatshisname was predominantly a power move to get rid of competition who did a one-time ad of one of her competitor's products, then she's a bad person by most standards.

I believe it's a combination of the 2. There's NO doubt she's a perfectionist, from how she presents herself, to how she speaks, even down to how she almost never plays with her hair in her videos bc it's distracting & annoying to watch. BUT, there's also NO doubt she's business minded, from how she keeps her products in frame when filming, lights up whenever another creator discusses, promotes, or even mentions her products, even down to her discussion of how she & her husband guided James in business matters & how to negotiate higher percentages on his deals in the "Bye Sister" video. Either way, it's become vividly clear to me that Tati is extremely smart & savvy...& (by extension) more calculated than most of us (or at least I) had originally perceived watching her review & put on makeup in the early days.😉 That being said, she IS such a perfectionist, I personally believe that tendency is making it nearly impossible for her (mentally) to return to KZbin bc her persona & channel are now forever tarnished & IMperfect. For someone like Tati, it makes it nearly impossible for her to carry on. I also think that's why the attempt was made with the "Breaking My Silence" video she made...to create a "clean slate" for herself to be perfect again through shifting the blemishes onto the ones with the REALLY tarnished reputations. Since that didn't work, her perfectionism can't reconcile a way to return that's comfortable for her. That's my NOVEL for today, lol😂🤣

It's really easy for someone with money to not take sponsorship deals or give honest reviews when nothing is at stake (sure she might have been able to make more money, but she wouldnt lose money if she bashed a brand ect). It's much harder to admit you lied because your feelings were hurt, when admitting that opens you up to consequences. I used to be a huge fan. I used to only watch 3 BGs, and used to watch her religiously all 5 days a week. Then when she cut down to 3, I watched every new video. Then it was 2. Then it was like eh maybe I'll get to it, maybe I won't. One of the main reasons I liked her was the lack of drama. There was really no shady comments, no "tea", no petty arguments, no extraness. I bought her palette during it's first run because I just knew her quality was going to be good. I was going to buy the blendiful but I kept waiting for a video about it from her, and when she finally made one she was so rude about it. She kept saying she thought it was common sense and we wouldn't need a video on it. It left a bad taste in my mouth. Her reputation in my eyes is tainted, I unfollowed and unsubbed on everything

I feel like she was recovering until she made that second video reading her prepared statement. Time had passed and she was making videos and people were moving on...she should have kept her head down when Shane was being cancelled, handled her lawsuits drama off camera and kept doing her thing she would’ve been fine now. I actually found her through Trisha Paytas.

I'm not defending Tati in any fashion BUT I ordered her pallette and the blendiful, I do use my blendi daily, I've put it in the washer, it's never fallen apart, I like it. I don't think it was worth how expensive it was, but I don't think it deserved the backlash.

With Tati... it is difficult to defend her without being called a stan or "you just got manipulated by her persona". It is easy to go against her cause, oh yea it is all just about the money at the end for her. But, to be honest, I just want to sympathise with her just as a person. She is not one dimensional, she is still an emotional person who also has days where her mentality might just be at a down low. She kept implying she truly wants a child but it is physically difficult for her. And I honestly believe that can affect her and her decisions. That Emily Noel thing, where the moment she said she was not a fan of it, she got attacked. Why? Can she personally not be a fan of a product and thats that, she still has her own preference. And then to get berated by that situation without support. And I love you(Smokey), your content, your personality, your cute doggo. But as someone who is studying, is wary of mental health and such, I feel like there could have been a slightly little more compassion towards your general opinions to Tati, personally. But yes, am I disappointed as well with Tati in all of this? Absolutely. Will I still love to know and watch Tati after this? Only time will tell, when all of these lawsuits and scandal are over. All I can say is that I hope she is doing well and this would not hurt her opportunity to have a child of her own. I mean all this stress and anxiety is not good to the body. Regardless, of my take on this, still love and appreciate you Smokey, cannot wait for Glowmas! (And just watch me being drag in the comments for my opinions, but to each there own, yea.)

Must agree, and I was surprised that Hannah, being a social scientist, would make post-facto proclamations - which is the epitome of unscientific approach when examining something. Saying over and over again that Tati, through years and years and yeaaaars on YT was honest JUST in anticipation of making more money in the future through her own brand is.... cringe. Moreover, making it sound as though it is something bad. In fact, wouldn’t all intelligent people protect their reputation at all costs? I knew well enough in University to not have my photo taken next to people smoking pot, cause I wanted to have no problems down the line in my career. Wow, that must mean I am CALCULATING. Give me a freakin break.

I didn't think about it from this angle. I actually agree. Maybe mental health, especially since we know what was going on with her and her business partner behind the scenes, would have been a nice input. Thank you for sharing this perspective.

@@sevothtartesama18 You make an excellent point. As a business professional, I've always been careful about what kind of content is posted online because losing my livelihood due to someone else's perceptions of my life is very real yet scary. Sharing personal health problems, political views, age, friends and relationships, activities, and even meme-sharing can put people into hot water. It can be discriminatory, but the biases are real, so being aware of this and careful about what is shared is not "calculating" in a negative way at all. As a hiring manager, I have done social media searches of the candidates I interview because I want to see what they are like outside of work. Reputation is all you have in business and without it, it doesn't matter how much talent or expertise you have - not many people are willing to give a chance to someone they cannot trust, especially in a situation where they show a polished and professional side but clearly are being inauthentic. The hope is that they will bring their authentic self to work, but sometimes what they do in their personal lives are bad for the business (like racism, misogyny, etc.).

I believed her from the beginning. She is a professional mature minded adult woman and she saw something dangerous and made the world aware. I find some of the tactics that Tati uses when defending herself interesting, especially since I watched a clip of podcast episode that featured Dr. Phil yesterday where he was talking about ways to tell when a person accused of something is actually lying and he mentioned that the number one defense tactics that liars use is by saying things like “you know me, do you think I’d do this?” and “have you known me to lie in the past?”

An “Evolution of” video on Michelle Phan would be really interesting...or even an evolution of makeup KZbin in general. She was the first KZbin guru I really remember, and her old videos really show how much different makeup KZbin was. It was back in the day when a tutorial was “use a brown eyeliner” instead of “I’m using Morphe eyeliner in shade Brown Out #usemycode” 🤣

Because she said a 19 yo was a sexual predator over some vitamins? And it’s weird that her being like 40 or whatever wanted to expose the sexual tendencies/behavior of someone that was practically a teen and she treated like a “son”? That’s why people bring up her age. And it isn’t even only her, but Shane and Jeffree too. Three YT dinosaurs making up sexual harrassment stories of a guy more than half their age.
