The part on death bed regrets resonates with me. I’m 60 this year and I’ve got friends with bad health and one that died from an accident at home last year. I bought a lovely Enfield Clubman cafe racer a couple of years back. This weekend I was at the Ace Cafe for Cafe Racer day and joined the 59 Club! In 2019 and this year I did a couple of bucket list trips to America. Life’s too short and I’ll work out retirement and finances when I come to that bridge! Rage, rage, rage!! Hope to see you one fine day when I’m out and about.

Any kind of motoring in UK is being eroded. I am glad I can spanner myself because it seems bike mechanics are becoming older and rarer with no new blood. I hate to think if they stop us riding but even if they don’t they will try to control what we ride.

Podcast listener but had to come on here to chime in. Was having a rough day thinking about life and finances so all the talk about regrets and the feeling we get from riding hit me deep. Glad to hear more people opening up about how they are dealing with mental issues. You never know what other people are silently going through so it's inspiring hearing encouraging words. Great work as always!

Yes to the CB350 in the UK. Maybe the success of Enfield's 350 range will prompt them to bring it here? Motorcycling for me is essential to my mental health, which hasn't always been good and my spiritual well being. Ridden since my late 20s, now in my 60s and have never owned a car. No bike, no life.

Very interesting podcast today Freddie. I would like to say that riding has kept me grounded all my life. It’s a spiritual thing that helps me clear my mind free my soul. There are no problems anymore when I ride. At that moment it’s just the wind in my hair and the loud sweet sound of my pipes running down the road. Remember the old saying. You never see a motorcycle in front of a psychiatrists office. It was great to find out that your great grandfather was part of the dark side and road a Harley. That might be telling you something Freddie. I might be your destiny to get that Harley.

As you get older your riding style and habits change, but riding is still there, bikes are still there. I couldn't think of never riding. As they say 4 wheels move the body, 2 wheels move the soul. Great watch Freddie and some good thought provoking stuff.

Good morning Freddie, I'm now 50 and bought the classic 350 after you said in your video it makes you feel happy to be alive 😅 and that's absolutely correct! Regarding the tappets I adjusted them at 300 miles and found one to be far too tight! . I adjusted them put it back together and could hear a slight tapping. I decided to adjust them again and now no tapping. It has to be so precise because if they are too tight you can't hear tapping but potentially could still cause damage. Have you seen the Kawasaki W800 Caffe? Amazing looking bike. They are just over 8k but some pre reg ones with 0 on the clock for 6.5k! You should do a review. Would make a great second bike if I can get it past my wife 😂

You have to get things in perspective. Financial security is key whatever you want to do in life. We are all different we all make bad and good decisions. There’s only one way of travelling that is better gives you a more sensory experience and that is cycling. Few people do it as it requires effort, a lot of effort, but the rewards are tremendous. I love motorcycling but I love cycling more. I feel truly alive on a bicycle and very thing is so much more immediate than on a motorcycle. Motorcycle is good, but nothing beats a bicycle for simplicity.

I got an Halcyon Grey Royal Enfield Classic 350 and love the hell out of it! Aside from getting a puppy in 2021, it was the best thing I've done in the last three, awful years. Been riding for 52 years, and probably the most fun I've had since I started - and it's the smallest bike (motor) since I was a kid. The bike is built like a gun, and you can't go anywhere without a conversation starting. Bikers and non-bikers alike are fascinated with them. For the cost, you get a perpetual smile machine™ which I am sure will make you happy! Get out, feel the world in your face, and enjoy life. One shot folks...don't waste it! Ride Safe 🙏🏼

I love these podcasts! Got to say, I've had a few of the bikes on this one (and quite a few others). One of my regrets in life would be not holding on to most of the bikes I've had! Not as my 'only bike' but to just keep for old times' sake. Funds would not allow for the vast majority of the time and I doubt that any of them would have been a shrewd investment but just to look at them and ride every now and then would bring back the old days. The memories, the smile factor, the eclectic motorcycle ownership journey through the years. The progression from "speed is everything" through "I'm going to either loose my licence or my life!" all the way to "comfort trumps everything". Maybe I should start looking at buying some of them again....most are worth nothing now but a few would be quite expensive I believe. Mind you, I'd need a pretty big barn too! I'm a firm believer in 'it doesn't matter what you ride as long as it puts a smile on your face'. My parting piece of advice would have to be :- never let your gravestone include the words "I wish I had done that" or "If only I had....". Every success mate and keep the shiny side up!

Excellent discussion on tappets! On bluetooth comms, Im using the AirPods Pro 2 in biltwell bonanza with bubble shield, pretty good for listening to music. I will try it with HJC V10, full face retro helmet. If your helmet is quiet enough I think AirPods work, but Siri won't listen. Edit: I have a classic 350 with stock exhaust, so it's reasonably quiet and pleasant

valve clearance - tappets - It is pretty true about the tappets not needing adjustments all the time. Back in the day you could generally hear if the tappets need adjusting. You can also use a large screwdriver and put it on the cover or sometimes the block, putting your ear onto the handle end and you could hear if tappets, little end or big end was worn and making a prominent noise.

2 months late! In the same situation as the guy in Portugal. I love my super cub and will keep it for commuting and shorter trips. Living in rural Italy, the Sibillini mountains I am in heaven every single day. I'd thought that going to a bonni as 1st big bike would be a stretch. Was thinking along the lines of swm 500, scram 411 or if the price is right and can wait long enough, the triumph 400. Maybe I should rethink. I'm waiting (this is Italy) for a riding school to fit me in, then I could go straight for the full license. Options! Loads to think about. I''m enjoying your channels. Well done.

Hi Freddie, about helmets, I love open face helmets and the wind blowing in my face, but during the summer, living in Wales, following a hay wagons and ending up looking like Worsel Gumage, I opted for the Scorpion exo tech helmet, which gives me an open face and when I need a full face I just pull the chin piece over and boom I have a full face helmet, I have fitted a Sena 50s to it and my wife’s and we talk more on the bike an we do in the car, it’s just my opinion and preference, btw, I’m 65 and my bride is 80, stay safe and thanks for all your hard work with the vlogs 👍

Freddie Freddie Freddie all my bikes have been carbureted my current one is 23 years old now and there has only been one time in all my years on bikes (Japanese bikes ) when I have had any problems at all and it is now because of Ethanol in the fuel so I have just bought a set of 4 float valves and needle valves on the advice of my mechanic to solve my issue this cost me about £50.and he will have them fitted in an hour approx . A friend of mine had exactly the same issue on his slightly later version of the same bike and then no issues what so ever 😉.Excellent program Freddie those ear pods are looking interesting too 👌👍

I have a 2015 BMW S1000XR and it has 76,000 miles, I have checked the valves every 18,000 miles, they have always been in spec, I checked the last time that the cam chain was still in spec as the guides are plastic. To change the spark plus you have to strip so much of the bike down to change them so checking the valves adds another 30 minutes for the peace of mind. It’s a modern engine so I do not expect to have to adjust them. I did 16,000 miles last year alone, which surprised even me. I did 8 days and 7 nights riding around Europe after downloading the trip from Ride Magazines, Ride Routes, was the Millau Tour, amazing trip. I have a 2005 Kawasaki ZX6R since new but didn’t get used much last year. Bought a Voge 300 Rally to do green laning and plan to ride part of the TET next year so something different. I have 3 very different bikes for different things I want from different bikes.

Great chat again Freddie 👍. I echo completey the thoughts of your final segment. I've been riding for over 40 years and have had many bikes of all types (except sports). My biking has changed significantly over the last five years and I've rediscovered the peace and freedom of going more slowly. I'm 60 next year and struggle with big, heavy bikes now. Even my 900 T100 feels a bit too much now. My Fiancée and I ride two up 90% of the time but we were both taken with the numerous reviews on the Classic 350 and especially your really enthusiastic review. So, adjusting our expectations accordingly we took two test rides on the Classic 350 and were extremely surprised indeed about how good it was even with pillion. Power is quite satisfactory, comfort is good for both and quality of build, fit and finish are excellent. So, we've actually placed an order for one in Halcyon Green and we've not been this excited in years 😁😁😁😁. Edit: and compared to some of my previous behemoths - it feels as light as a 125 🤗

Hi Freddie, brilliant podcast as usual. To the Portuguese guy looking for a touring bike on a budget he could consider the following: Yamaha xj750 from the early 1980's, shaft drive 4 cylinder and bomb proof engine, I racked up over 60k miles before selling with only servicing done. Kawasaki gt550 and gt750, again 4 cylinder shaft drive and I knew despatch riders doing well over 100k with basic services kept up. Buy on condition and there should be tidy bikes available with the climate in Portugal for less than the Honda cub!

The solution to wind/engine noise with bluetooth comm systems is to use ear plugs that block certain (loud) frequencies. You could pick ear plugs, or buds of your choice. It doesn't matter. Most of them, will still let in the sound that comes from the bluetooth system. You can listen to music, have group communications and so on. But you don't hear loud wind noises or engine noises. You also still hear some of the ambient sounds from traffic. But it just makes everything little quiter and more pleasant.

Really thought provoking first segment Freddie , and I think that biking has connected me to reality more than anything bar the Buddhist teachings which are my other passion in life. My gf used to enjoy going on the back up to 45-50 mph but has recently started worrying about what would happen to her grown up kids if we crashed so I’ve stopped her going on now as that’s not a burden l could carry. Biking is dangerous and should only be done if you want to take the risk- but what a treasure you can reap if you do! Remind me of that on a wet Tuesday on the M6 in winter though 😂

hi again Freddie . when the mechanic stated that if you cant hear the tappet noise they dont need adjusting is wrong . if clearances are too tight it can be more damaging to an engine .the clearances are there to allow for expansion and contraction and also for oil to get between the moving parts. if valves are tight it causes premature wear and valve seats to burn . what do you reckon to that ?.

I was using chat gpt the other day to answer this question and it listed the chance of dying from riding 4K a year for 10 years as 1/434. Which is less dangerous than smoking. But more dangerous than combat sports, ski-ing etc. as far as like for like can be made. I gave up motorcycling in my 20s when it felt like I had a lot to lose. Came back in my late 30’s, now if I don’t have a bike I’d miss it. But if I could find something else that filled the gap I would.

I could have got a lot further in my career by staying in the school I taught at in the first half of my thirties and ended as deputy head, or something. I'd have a bigger pension, a better house worth a lot of more money than my present property is worth. But I'd never have lived in Tokyo, travelled extensively, both backpacking and, more importantly, by a number of motorbikes, the first being a Yamaha XT500E, really all you need for touring. I would also have not written five novels with five more on the way. Mind you, it helps never having had children. Just lots of difficult girlfriends. To the bloke in Portugal. I will be back in Lagos in mid-May, looking to sell a superb Yamaha MT-01 - 1670cc, air-cooled V-twin of 2011 vintage. It has only done 20,000 km. You'd love it. Those death bed confessions add up to “don’t try to be an altruist, be selfish” our moral ambition should be our own happiness which is the state of uncontroversial joy. As Ayn rand said in the speech by Galt : Happiness is the successful state of life, pain is an agent of death. Happiness is that state of consciousness which proceeds from the achievement of one’s values. A morality that dares to tell you to find happiness in the renunciation of your happiness-to value the failure of your values-is an insolent negation of morality. A doctrine that gives you, as an ideal, the role of a sacrificial animal seeking slaughter on the altars of others, is giving you death as your standard. By the grace of reality and the nature of life, man-every man-is an end in himself, he exists for his own sake, and the achievement of his own happiness is his highest moral purpose. But neither life nor happiness can be achieved by the pursuit of irrational whims. Just as man is free to attempt to survive in any random manner, but will perish unless he lives as his nature requires, so he is free to seek his happiness in any mindless fraud, but the torture of frustration is all he will find, unless he seeks the happiness proper to man. The purpose of morality is to teach you, not to suffer and die, but to enjoy yourself and live.

Lead was added to fuel as old timer car engines didn't have hard valve seats and not having lead in the fuel would cause detonation and wear away valve seats. The lead prevented this from happening. Now engines have much harder valve seats so lead is no longer needed nor indeed allowed in fuel owing to it's carcinogenic affect on human health. ICE are now far cleaner with emissions. You only have to cycle to realise this. When an old timer banger passes you it quite literally gases you. Modern car engines don't.

Why didn't you take one of your own helmets with you to Bali? Don't understand why you didn't. The Speedmaster is a beautiful bike. It is genuine modern day classic.

Just because of a lack of space in my bag. Otherwise I’d have definitely brought my helmet👌🏻

@@tuesdayatdobbs I am actually brought in Sweden. As you might now, Sweden is a very open country where almost all information about your life is public information. As long as you have a plate number it is quite easy to get the information that you are searching for.

Every time I go out on my beast I think that bike is ridiculous and I don’t need it, it’s crazy. But I always look forward to a ride and feel great afterwards. My bike is my love, sat there in my garage, my joy. My other joy is working on it, improving the looks and performance. Love it. Don’t tell too many people you’re a Guardian reader Freddy 🫣😁

So do not what ever you do beat yourself up when you fail the 5 ..At 70 I have failed most. Just do the best you can and even today I am not sure what Happy really is ? Some say wealth "not many" others say peace some say to do as you wish I say as corny as it sounds do to otheres as you would do to yourself and that my friends is all you can honestly do !! The rest is up to every god dam individual !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Working hard is usually to support loved ones so nothing wrong with that unles you ignore the ones you are working for ?? JUST DO YOUR BEST YOU CAN NOTDO ANY MORE BE IT RIGHT BE IT WRONG YOU DID YOUR BEST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
